Embodying the Presence of God
St. Mary's Sewanee
Gail Fitzpatrick-Hopler & David Frenette with Hadley Morris
God breathes us in that we may rest in fruition
and God breathes us out that
we may love
and do good works.
-John Ruusbroec
Contemplative practice helps us to realize that God, like our breath, is always within us. Centering Prayer is our foundational practice. On that foundation we can build more skillful practices that deepen contemplation even further. Using the breath as our sacred symbol in Centering Prayer helps us to learn how to relate more fully to God’s indwelling presence and action. Practicing with the sacred breath can be especially helpful at certain times on the spiritual journey, such as when we are going through a period of emotional purification (also known as the unloading of the unconscious).
Retreat includes:
- new teachings on how to practice with the sacred breath in Centering Prayer,
- how to live contemplative attitudes in all of life,
- three hours of Centering Prayer in common,
- silence,
- free time in solitude,
- body prayer
- and the opportunity to meet individually with the retreat teachers
