I suspect that whatever has occurred in my life in this regard has, to a significant extent, been a gift that I have received through my practice and involvement related to Contemplative Outreach; but I hasten to add that I cannot be sure since I am strongly aware of God's grace flowing toward me through many channels in my life.

A Homemade Psalm

Oh God, an owl in the night calls out over and again...
"who...who-who ... are you?"

Dawn awakens the winter trees' long bony fingers, scratching at the
clouds..." tell us...tell us... where are you, God?"

A Meditation on Centering Prayer and Poverty of Spirit
Sydney S. Orr
Voices of Community

Fr. Keating recommends studying the beatitudes.  The beatitudes, especially poverty of spirit, seem to stand out in the heart of his writing.  It seems to me I can take satisfaction in my gifts, even the gift of Centering Prayer, and it needs a poverty of spirit.

A Quiet Communion
Thomas J. Pawloski
Voices of Community

All things must have a start, even times of quiet contemplation.  After several days of hard cold rain on the Northern California coast ones thinking can become gray as the weather.  In my slow indoor “cabin fever” pace I can’t help thinking over my long past with its Lenten enhanced sorrowful sin episodes.  They hit me like machine gun bullets, so many incidents of shame and sorrow, bad fleshy decisions.

A Very Different Holy Week
Marge Rafftery
Voices of Community

How could we make Holy Week special?  My husband cannot make the 3 p.m. Good Friday service as feeding time is 3:30 p.m.  There was no way either of us could take in the beautiful Holy Thursday ceremony then stay for a holy hour or two afterwards as we had for so many years before.

Agnostic Adventures with Centering Prayer

"Who put the bop in the bopshubopshubop, who put the ram in the ramalamadingdong ... " Those were the typical contents of my brain during my sporadic attempts at meditation until metastatic cancer and two good friends convinced me to try again. One friend was dedicated to the practice of Zen meditation, the other to Centering Prayer...

How does one pray if there is no faith in God? How do I stop the constant chatter? What is supposed to happen? Can one do Centering Prayer and not be a Christian?

Another Easter . . .
Marge Rafftery
Voices of Community

As I read the latest "Voices of the Community" articles from the current Contemplative Outreach e-bulletin, I noticed something I had not seen before . . . one could go back to previous articles.  So I did just that . . . going back to one I had written two years ago just after Easter that year (see the article "A Very Different Holy Week.").

Be Still and Know that I am God
Kathy Thomson
Voices of Community

“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10).  It was a verse I had long been familiar with, but what in the world did it mean? ...   The concept of being still and simply consenting to God’s presence and action within me was a foreign one.

Blessings from Behind the Bars: Centering Prayer in Prison
Rev. Mikail Davenport

In 2006, my late wife, Kate, four other psychotherapists, a cognitive behavioral trainer, and myself began a program at Travis County Correctional Center in Austin entitled LifeTools©. It provided psychological, cognitive behavioral, and spiritual direction for over 200 men until 2009, when the program ended.

Centering Prayer & the Process of Transformation
Mindy Durias

I often think about these words from Jesus,

“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them. For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

What was so special to Jesus about children, that he would gift them the kingdom of God?

Some of us are blessed with good health, relative prosperity and long lives. But in even the most charmed life, there are times when things do not go as planned, when illness, accident, or bereavement threaten to leave a hole in the hearts and souls of the most faithful and optimistic Christians...

Centering Prayer is ...

Centering prayer is cuddling with Christ.
Centering prayer is taking out the trash of the subconscious.
Centering prayer is releasing a handful of helium balloons; a heart-full of joy.
Centering prayer is laying in a shallow stream and allowing His waters to rush over us.
