Centering prayer is cuddling with Christ.
Centering prayer is taking out the trash of the subconscious.
Centering prayer is releasing a handful of helium balloons; a heart-full of joy.
Centering prayer is laying in a shallow stream and allowing His waters to rush over us.

I had been working as a hospital chaplain for just a few months, when one morning I visited a patient (let’s call her Joan) who was due to have complicated cardiac surgery later that morning. The moment I entered her private room I realised that she was consumed by anxiety.

About five years ago, I was searching for a spiritual practice.  One day, a notice appeared in our local paper about an event called “A Taste of Silence.”  The rest, as they say, is history.  The practice of Centering rayer appealed to me immediately.

I suspect that whatever has occurred in my life in this regard has, to a significant extent, been a gift that I have received through my practice and involvement related to Contemplative Outreach; but I hasten to add that I cannot be sure since I am strongly aware of God's grace flowing toward me through many channels in my life.

Walking Into the Dawn

Before setting out for morning services, John and I stood outside of our hermitage, which overlooked the valley and the monastery below, and gazed into the pre-dawn sky; the same sky we examined the previous evening after returning from Vespers, when John pointed out to me the mighty Orion. Now, as then, the moon and stars enchanted us...

A Quiet Communion

All things must have a start, even times of quiet contemplation.  After several days of hard cold rain on the Northern California coast ones thinking can become gray as the weather.  In my slow indoor “cabin fever” pace I can’t help thinking over my long past with its Lenten enhanced sorrowful sin episodes.  They hit me like machine gun bullets, so many incidents of shame and sorrow, bad fleshy decisions.

In May of 2008, I attended a Centering Prayer Presenter-Formation Retreat at St. Mary’s Retreat Center, Sewanee, Tennessee.    On the night of May 18, we all participated in group lectio divina.   The words from the Gospel of Mark scripture reading that reached out to me were “given to me.”  Ruminating on those words, I asked God over and over, “God what are you saying?”

I was overwhelmed by constant, intense, thoughts and feelings of fear.  At the time, I believed that if I was just ‘right with God’, or, became a ‘better Christian’, these worrisome and fearful thoughts would certainly disappear.  So, I tried harder.  I purchased more spiritual books, attended more worship services, and prayed more frequently.  I was living a devout/religious life.  But, the fearful/condemning thoughts, along with their corresponding bodily feelings, just further intensified.
