Gift of Life

During four days of filming in December 2010, Fr. Thomas Keating sat with Fr. Carl Arico, his long-time friend, colleague, and founding member of Contemplative Outreach in an intimate conversation focused on the transformative process of death and dying as part of, rather than the end of, life’s journey. The Gift of Life: Death & Dying, Life & Living offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that counter the cultural norms that view death as a tragedy, or the end of living, or an entry into harsh judgment and retribution. The new DVD series will be released later this year. Over six hours of footage from the interview was not used in the series. Each week during 2013, bits of this unused footage will be posted to the website. We call these tidbits Gifts for Living …. May it be so.

The Accelerated Course for Those Over 80

Series:
Q&A with Fr. Carl J. Arico

Q:  In the book, The Human Condition, it mentions an accelerated course for people over 80.  I am looking for information on that program.

Basically in contemplative prayer you’re taking your particular localized energy of the Ultimate Reality, just as you are, and letting go of all secondary things and are just being in the presence of that which is the most real part of one’s being.  And, some traditions call this the self, or the True Self, which is this presence of the infinite energy or creative energy of God manifesting in our particular form of creaturehood.  And so in prayer we just relax into who we already are.

We could think of humanity then as this enormous energy of manifestation of God that is organized by some higher principles or maybe intellectual powers or by the infinite God as God.  But the result is that this energy, this divine energy, is present in our local circumstances.  Otherwise, we wouldn’t be here.  But it’s present not with an absolute identity, but present as the necessary source and support and is in a relationship to whatever this particular particle has become, or is part of.

So let’s take one of the things that has been discovered: namely, the wave and the particle theory.  So, science can look at an object in either way and it is still the same thing.  So, is it an object in the first place or what should you call it?  And then the wave manifests itself in a local particle which is limited but in which the wave is still present, somewhat the way in the ocean a wave is not a separate amount of water, but its part of the whole ocean. So, the whole ocean of energy that constitutes the wave in particle physics manifests itself in such a way that it remains present while it’s distinct.  It’s localized.  So, we could think of humanity then as this enormous energy of manifestation of God.

The fact that God is present also introduces the factor that he’s not present in creation as something static that has been created because we have all kinds of evidence that creation takes place in the form of evolution of things moving in the material world into ever greater complexity from the most infinitesimal base –beyond our imagination but which science, technology, is certainly discovering.

God is constantly calling order out of chaos and this is one of the masterpieces of creation and hinted at, of course, in Genesis where the Spirit breathed over the chaos and brought forth a light and so on.  But just for fun, God is not static.  He moves so fast that’s why we don’t see him!  Even in nature here we know now that the galaxies and the dying supernovas spew-out the last remains of their energy into the universe at about a million miles an hour.  So, if they can go a million miles an hour, God is faster than that.  So fast you might say that he’s already there when he arrives from some other place!  And hence he’s omnipresent in this sense that there’s nothing that can be present where God isn’t present too.  Now is that changelessness, or is that movement?
