Gift of Life

During four days of filming in December 2010, Fr. Thomas Keating sat with Fr. Carl Arico, his long-time friend, colleague, and founding member of Contemplative Outreach in an intimate conversation focused on the transformative process of death and dying as part of, rather than the end of, life’s journey. The Gift of Life: Death & Dying, Life & Living offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that counter the cultural norms that view death as a tragedy, or the end of living, or an entry into harsh judgment and retribution. The new DVD series will be released later this year. Over six hours of footage from the interview was not used in the series. Each week during 2013, bits of this unused footage will be posted to the website. We call these tidbits Gifts for Living …. May it be so.

The Christian perspective of faith in the New Testament most of the time really means trust.  It really means surrender to God.  And this idea of surrender to God is present in the other world religions sometimes under different terms and is now popping up a good deal in transpersonal psychology.*

**Transpersonal psychology is psychology that encompasses self-transcendent and spiritual aspects of the human experience wherein the sense of self extends beyond the personal to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life and the cosmos.

Most of our life is spent starving at a well laid table because we don’t know how to use the gifts that we’ve received and we’re induced by society and others to try to find it in idols, that is to say, in substitutes for God. This process of purification is a process of reuniting the simplicity of a baby with its environment and, hence, we become once again, as Jesus recommended, like little children; that is, accepting everything as a gift from the Father rather than trying to make a fortune or to seek our own fortune or whatever the ideas of happiness are in the culture in which we owe our upbringing and living.

FR. CARL – You hear it said that death is seeing the face of God…

FR. THOMAS – What does the face of God mean? The face of God is just a metaphor for the presence of God. So, the presence of God is precisely this house that is we actually are in because it includes the whole of creation. But it is a house that has different levels of identification with the owner. The owner is the house actually in this case, but we’re using metaphors in trying to understand that we’re both distinct from God and indistinct from God at the same time according to the teaching of [Meister] Eckhart and [Raimon] Panikkar and others of the great Christian mystics.

Distinto a Dios y no distinto a Dios

The cross is our invitation to participate in the self-giving of Jesus to the point of identifying with humanity, that is, identify with sin in the sense of the consequences of sin. . The cross then is the human condition of this body that is lying there that has been through the process of dying and has died and has accepted its sufferings and even embraced them out of a greater love for the human family.

FR CARL: Thomas, you made the comment: ‘When you accept death, you accept God and in accepting God, you accept death.’

FR THOMAS: Well, what is accepting death really mean? It’s accepting what God does all the time which is to give himself away to the other relationships; in other words, what the Father is doing is giving himself totally away. The Father is infinite potentiality and the Son is the actualization of all the possibilities, so he is all that the Father is and receives it as sheer gift and also returns it to the Father in the dynamism of returning all that he has received. This total self-giving of each other is a love beyond any love we can imagine ... a love that is totally and actually and really being given all the time and so it is like an enormous river of divine love that is flowing among the members of the Trinity forever.

So, what the incarnation is manifesting is what is going on all the time inwardly in the Most Holy Trinity. So, sacrifice in the Trinity is death – the total loss of ourselves and our human life in this world. So, in that sense, we become equal in God’s ideas through humility, letting go of our own personal ambitions even in the spiritual plane. Just to be love which is what the Trinity is.

To accept sacrifice, that is, to give oneself totally away and surrender to God and to the welfare of the whole human family is death and actually involves real death for us and it also involves real death for the Word Made Flesh as we see in Christ’s passion and death. The Word of God sacrifices himself totally in returning to the Father and in becoming human  he suffers immensely actual death because of his love of humanity.

In regard to the Word of God which is the fullness of the Father in the Trinity, he has created the universe and, at some point, has become a human being along with us. And, in doing this, as Paul says, he emptied himself, not considering being God something to cling to.

Within the Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit [there is] no possessive attitude but [they] give themselves totally to each other in what theology calls ‘circumensession’ so that they live in each other rather than in themselves. That is why Jesus says, ‘No one can come to the Father except through me’ because that is where he is! What is clear is there is no possessive attitude in divine love. It gives itself completely.
