Gift of Life

During four days of filming in December 2010, Fr. Thomas Keating sat with Fr. Carl Arico, his long-time friend, colleague, and founding member of Contemplative Outreach in an intimate conversation focused on the transformative process of death and dying as part of, rather than the end of, life’s journey. The Gift of Life: Death & Dying, Life & Living offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that counter the cultural norms that view death as a tragedy, or the end of living, or an entry into harsh judgment and retribution. The new DVD series will be released later this year. Over six hours of footage from the interview was not used in the series. Each week during 2013, bits of this unused footage will be posted to the website. We call these tidbits Gifts for Living …. May it be so.

What about someone who is blow to bits without any time at all to move into the dying process?  God’s time is not our time. And so, he can concentrate, perhaps in a trillionth of a second, this whole process because of the divine power. So, we don’t have to think that because it was so short that they didn’t have a chance to complete it. The process is not dependent on time. What time does is enable the observers to perceive it, but it can happen anywhere. So, this is very consoling.

Patients in that stage of awakening to the dynamic ground feel all the forces of that energy and it often has effects like visions, or experiences of deep union, that in some situations cause the patient to kind of withdraw – at least temporarily – in order to rest in that extraordinary sense of peace and integration.

Hundreds of people in hospice go through these stages, which are part of the transformation process, that are described in the spiritual literature in most of the great spiritual traditions – re-identifying with the source from which we came with the Ground of Being that has never left us because creation is continuous. And that is both frightening and fascinating at the same time.

Everyone coming into the world passes through stages of human development that are obvious – infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, elderly, old age, and then the process of dying. And our present culture has the greatest difficulties in dealing with it since the nature of our culture emphasizes the continuance of life and the greatest measure of success or enjoyment and comfort mistaking pleasure or gratification of those desires for happiness, but their actual nature is that they are impermanent and they are passing and they may reach a certain satisfaction, but they gradually disappear and, in the end, one finds oneself inevitably dying and letting go of one’s estate, if one has one, in the sense of not having time to finish some things you wanted to, and so, surrender seems to be the key.
