Gift of Life

During four days of filming in December 2010, Fr. Thomas Keating sat with Fr. Carl Arico, his long-time friend, colleague, and founding member of Contemplative Outreach in an intimate conversation focused on the transformative process of death and dying as part of, rather than the end of, life’s journey. The Gift of Life: Death & Dying, Life & Living offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that counter the cultural norms that view death as a tragedy, or the end of living, or an entry into harsh judgment and retribution. The new DVD series will be released later this year. Over six hours of footage from the interview was not used in the series. Each week during 2013, bits of this unused footage will be posted to the website. We call these tidbits Gifts for Living …. May it be so.

We are born with a certain identity with the experiences that are happening moment-by-moment as the brain develops it absorbs an enormous amount of information and the self only begins to be an entity after probably eight or ten months, and then it begins to grow exponentially as it begins to be held responsible to take care of itself and so on, and belong to the family, and go to school, developing consciousness and ego which is a very important stage because without a certain ego strength it is very difficult to pursue the spiritual journey with its man-sized and woman-sized expectations and demands.

One is awestruck and amazed at how out of the chaos that Scripture seems to accept in the beginning has come various orders of incredible complexity that work together to produce an ongoing universe that is expanding at enormous rates and leaves us wondering ... Well, who the heck are we in the face of this enormous universe? And the invitation that Scripture offers us from the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to share the divine life and to try to live it in the midst of the complexity and diversity and also the unevolved character of human life specifically is coming out of a love that is relational and that is seeking us.

God’s intention is to make us equal to God in so far as it is possible.  And instead of that,  Adam and Eve and us are presented with the urgent temptation of trying to become God in the way that we conceive God: namely as the grantor, protector or even servant of our projects for happiness and our over-identification with our particular group. So, humanity has gone its own way of seeking God and it needs to be called back to the journey and to be willing to accept the invitation to become one with God and to relate to him in all the ways that are appropriate.

Instead of freedom being an enormous gift for serving God and loving God, it sends out an appeal to be a competitive program – to become God’s equal – and this is the exact temptation, of course, that Satan proposed to Adam and Eve. They told him we are not supposed to eat this fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. He said, “Oh, don’t pay any attention that that!  God know that if you eat it you will be equal to him.”

They ate the fruit of the tree and immediately became aware of good and evil which they hadn’t been before, apparently. And what brought this about was their self-consciousness. So now they were self-conscious that they had disobeyed God. So this is the basic human – or any creature with freedom – temptation and it consists of wanting to be equal to God on our own terms; that is to say, we want to manage this process instead of receiving it as the sheer gift of God’s generosity.

The trouble with a free creature is apparently – and this was the case with Adam and Eve – that they want to imitate God in every way with the exception of his humility.  And this is the most important way to imitate God as we hopefully find out in the transformative process before too long.

For the first time that we know of in all of creation, material has been so arranged and developed and life has emerged from it, or been created in addition to it, that enables people to reflect on the universe, to appreciate it, to respond in a human way which means emotionally, as well as physically and spiritually and to reflect on ourselves.  And so, the great question of life when it begins to be adequately self-reflective and self-conscious through the years of infancy, childhood, early adolescence is that we don’t know who we are.

There is a whole period of human developmental consciousness called mythic membership and this was the result of the revolution of society into agricultural communities which was a development, of course, from the hunter/gatherer cultures that lasted thousands of years. The mythic membership is an over-identification with the community so that one draws one’s identity not from one’s own integrity or from the divine relationship we may have developed, but from the expectations of the group which can be very powerful and demanding or cause us to sacrifice our own ideals and convictions in order to be allowed to remain in the group.

All our difficulties, you might say, begin or come from the separate- self sense because instead of being unified with the universe and people around us and the God who created us, the experience of the infant is in being alone in a potentially hostile universe and the need to protect oneself since no one else is going to do this completely after mother has finished her basic duties in the first year or so, if that long.  So the separate-self sense is what drives the infant to seek a self that is safe, that is successful, that is free of pain, that is acceptable in society, that has possibilities of meaning and success and fame and fortune and all the other things that gradually evolve in our own personal history which greatly influences our ideas or expectations of ourselves, as well as those imposed on us by other people.
