SUMMARY:Online Morning Retreat: "By Their Fruits You Will Know Them\," led by Julie Saad
DESCRIPTION:“How do you know you are being transformed? Usually\, either you or someone else in your life starts to notice that something has changed\, something is different in your daily life\, how you approach relationships\, conflict\, work\, chores\, loss\, emotional turmoil. Transformation is about becoming who you are—not your idea of who you are\, but God’s idea of who you are. Consenting to be transformed does not mean that life is somehow all of a sudden easy\, be we start to realize that we are not alone in this project and may even start to experience the peace that comes from interior silence.”\n– Julie Saad\, Contemplative Life: Discovering Our Path into the Heart of God \nIn this workshop we will be taking a deeper dive into Thomas Keating’s teaching about the transformation we experience with a regular practice of Centering Prayer\, in other words\, the fruits of Centering Prayer. Topics will include the unloading of the unconscious\, our basic core of goodness\, dismantling the emotional programs for happiness\, restructuring of consciousness\, the transforming union\, and interior silence. In addition to our time together in Centering Prayer\, we will experience some practical contemplative prayer practices that will help us to recognize and consent to God’s transforming action in our lives. \nMorning program will include one session of Centering Prayer along with a brief Lectio and one or two guided meditations. \nPlease register using the link below. \nOffered freely\, although contributions ($20 suggested) towards our programming costs are greatly appreciated: https://contemplativeoutreachnova.com/donations

SUMMARY:Prayer Without Ceasing: Contemplation in Work\, Body\, and Creation
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Immersion Retreat with Mark Kutolowski \n‘Pray without ceasing.’ (I Thessalonians 5:17) How can we experience ceaseless prayer and conscious union of our hearts with God? SUMMARY:JOY WITHIN: Meister Eckhart’s Way of Releasement (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:“Do not be afraid…joy is within you”\n– Meister Eckhart \nRelease yourself. Relax and effortlessly allow yourself to be one with God\, says Meister Eckhart. And you will know joy unbound. Come learn how to release yourself into God. In these retreats\, we will reflect on Meister Eckhart’s teaching on “Gelassenheit” or releasement (meaning detachment and letting go/letting be) as the key to becoming a mystic\, as the key to being happy. \nEckhart lived a gentle\, detached\, and active life; his life was guided by letting go and letting be. We will learn about his life in the context of his anxious\, violent times – times very much like our own. Releasing the self and its attachments\, releasing into the God beyond God\, freeing our consciousness\, and shaking loose from all the shackles of rigidity and loneliness – whether in our minds or in society and religion – will form the core of our reflections. We will even avert to Eckhart’s thoughts on changing the church. \nEach retreat will include three periods of Centering Prayer\, a lecture\, and a discussion. Presented by L.J. Milone \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Presence\, Prayer and Writing from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:All of us have myriad stories to tell. Some involve our family history\, spiritual journey\, experiences in Nature\, or a life-changing situation. Stories can take many forms\, but the most compelling are the ones written from the heart\, those that move us and sometimes transform both the writer and reader. Writing from the heart demands attentiveness\, honesty\, courage\, and a commitment to engage with a creative process that pulls us into the unknown where we are often surprised at what surfaces. It’s a journey of discovery. And presence and prayer can help us along that journey. \nThis writing retreat is structured for those currently working on a project\, those who want to start one\, or those who simply desire to spend time in beautiful surroundings playing with words. In addition to Centering Prayer sessions—silence can be a portal to the Source of creativity and truth-telling—there will be ample opportunities to write\, walk\, think\, and just be. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Wisdom School: Wisdom Rhythms & Conscious Relationships
DESCRIPTION:In any moment\, regardless of how significant or insignificant it may seem\, we can offer ourselves as instruments\, vessels\, means by which worlds beyond can enter into this world\, which has often been termed by several traditions ‘mixtus orbis.’ Wisdom teacher Cynthia Bourgeault often reminds us that this world’s dense conditions are not a mistake but a place where the rough material of our lives can be mixed with spiritual substances and nutrients from beyond and in so doing\, something essential is created. \nThere is much to glean from the wisdom lineages in every tradition\, including Christianity\, about waking up to a different reality and orienting our lives to something more than our every day\ncircumstances. In the case of the Christian wisdom lineage\, we can place our gaze towards the world beyond—kingdom of heaven\, the imaginal realm—which is always in our midst when we\nhave eyes to see and ears to hear. When we can attune ourselves to this dimension\, we can begin to draw from an endless wellspring and be of service to God in our day to day lives and\nrelationships. Drawing on the work of Cynthia Bourgeault\, G.I. Gurdjieff\, and others\, this Wisdom School will focus on listening for the wisdom rhythms that deepen presence in our\nthree centers – intellectual\, emotional\, body – in order that we can perceive and act in accordance with the higher laws of the kingdom of heaven in cosmic servanthood and in particular in conscious relationships. \nJoin us in person at the Mercy Center in Burlingame. There will be an invitation to a ‘wisdom way of knowing’ through a daily rhythm with periods of silence\, Centering Prayer\, teaching\,\nconscious conversation\, Gurdjieff Exercises and Movements\, chanting\, mindful work\, lectio divina\, and contemplative free time. \nRequired Reading (if you have not been to a wisdom school before): ‘Wisdom Way of Knowing’ by Cynthia Bourgeault \nRetreat Leaders:\nHeather Ruce\, M.A. will be offering different teachings\, Gurdjieff Movements and Seated Attention Exercises. She is a wisdom spiritual director with training in a neurophysiology based\napproach to understanding the nervous system. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Christian Wisdom\nTradition. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. will be supporting our wisdom school experience. She is a spiritual director\, and Centering Prayer coordinator at Mercy Center. Joy is dedicated to fostering\ncontemplative practices such as Centering Prayer and others within the Christian Wisdom tradition that help us become aware of God’s ever-present love. As a scientist she sees in the\nphysical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. will be supporting our wisdom school experience. She is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the\nCentering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this\ntime in our world. \nCONTACT \nTo register\, please see the link below.\nFor further assistance\, contact us at (650) 340-7474.\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org \nThese are unprecedented times. SUMMARY:JOY WITHIN: Meister Eckhart’s Way of Releasement (Part II)
Milone. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer 8-day Post Intensive
DESCRIPTION:The eight-Day Centering Prayer Post-Intensive Retreat offered from Tuesday\, September 12 to Tuesday\, September 19\, 2023\, provides an opportunity to deepen the practice of Centering Prayer in an atmosphere of profound silence and community support. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer and the Enneagram: Finding A New Way Home
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have grown up in faith groups that have spiritually wounded us with a transactional theology that has made us feel more distant from God and unworthy of receiving God’s love. As we step onto a new path\, even as we intellectually embrace a new understanding of God\, we still carry the spiritual scars and they can become impediments to our spiritual growth. Learning how to unwind the old story and reweave a new one requires more than adopting a new theology. The old theology remains part of our psychological and spiritual make up and it takes patience\, practice\, and loving compassion to begin to see through it to our original wholeness\, lovingly planted deep within our being. \nOne of the most common impediments to living in God’s love is our concept of sin. The word “sin’ has often been used in a way that has been shaming and belittling. In this retreat\, we will visit the works of an early desert father\, Evagrius of Ponticus\, who can help us deconstruct the word “sin” and come to understand it as a passion that ensnares the heart. Once identified\, it can become a roadmap for leading us home. One way to portray this roadmap is a nine-pointed symbol called the enneagram. (In the retreat we will not do enneagram typing but only refer to the symbol itself). Our aim is to come to see ourselves more clearly so that we can begin to let go of the religious and other baggage we carry and allow grace to manifest more fully in our lives. This helps deepen our consent to God’s loving presence and action in our Centering Prayer\, and in our lives. \nJoin us for this healing retreat. Grounded in periods of Centering Prayer\, silence\, teachings\, time in the natural beauty of the Mercy grounds\, liturgy\, and optional gentle yoga\, this retreat will make room for God’s transforming Spirit to reveal the love and mercy that are our true heritage. \nRev. Amber Sturgess is an Episcopal Priest\, spiritual director\, and a seeker on the contemplative path. She enjoys teaching contemplative practices that deepen our spiritual awareness. Amber currently serves as Rector of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Carmel. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director. Joy is dedicated to fostering contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer and others within the Christian Wisdom tradition that help us become aware of God’s ever-present love. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Five-Day Centering Prayer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The retreat is an opportunity to deepen your practice of Centering Prayer in community\, silence\, and in solitude with the theme of the Divine Symphony. \nWhen we listen to a beautiful symphony we are often swept up in its embrace. God desires to bring us into his divine symphony of love and beckons us to live all our life—our work\, our prayer\, our family life\, and our engagement with nature—in harmony with this Love. \nThis retreat explores God’s divine symphony of love through encountering silence\, contemplative prayer\, walking in nature\, and viewing themed Spiritual Journey videos of Thomas Keating. Each of us is a part of the divine symphony where God is engaging us in mystical union and encouraging us to live into our own specific destiny of love.
