SUMMARY:Icons as Portals for Unlocking the Contemplative Heart via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mary Atalo\, a half-day retreat sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington. \nIcons\, as opposed to paintings\, are considered as “writings of the heart” which open the contemplative to “Behold” the Glory of the Lord. Many paintings can aid in our “seeing\,” but icons allow us to “behold.” In our contemplative prayer\, first through a silent “gazing” at the image in Visio Divina\, another realm begins to appear which lures us to step beyond the gaze into the ineffable realm of the Divine\, where “Beholding” is the work of silence.” This “Beholding” transfigures the way we see the world\, how we act in it\, and conveys the great hope of God’s enduring love and wisdom as promised in the Covenant of Peace. \nIn this mini retreat\, we will practice contemplative “Beholding” through Visio Divina of icons from the ancient Orthodox Akathistos Hymn\, The O Antiphons\, The Litany of Loretto\, and the Old Testament Wisdom Books. We shall see that there are really two Christmas stories of Incarnation occurring during this season: one occurring in time and space as the incarnation of Christ; another occurring in eternity\, as the incarnation of the Divine. We will follow the Contemplative Outreach guidelines for Visio Divina. \nRev. Dr. Mary Atalo is an Archpriest of the Wisdom tradition in the independent Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch\, and Associate Dean of Sophia Divinity School\, the Church’s distant learning Seminary. She is the rector of a newly formed church\, “Our Lady of the Bridge” in Union Bridge\, MD\, a sacramental and contemplative community in the Christian mystical tradition. She had a former 30-year career as an oceanographer\, and seeks to bridge science and religion. In 2020\, she led the COMW Advent mini-retreat\, and has been an advocate of the contemplative prayer practices of Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. William Meninger in daily life.

SUMMARY:“God is Love\, the Heart of All Creation” via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Keating with Carl J. Arico\nVideo and Discussion hosted by Benedicte Vibe Christensen \nThe video series God is Love\, The Heart of All Creation was filmed in Snowmass\, CO\, in 2013. Carl Arico interviewed Thomas Keating about a variety of topics from cosmology\, divine/human evolution\, and unity consciousness\, to silence and centering prayer. Thomas Keating considered this video series as Part 8 in his foundational Spiritual Journey series. \nThis half-day retreat—the first in a series of two retreats—will focus on two segments: Prologue on cosmology and the human evolution. Thomas Keating explains how scientific discoveries have led us to a new cosmology based on our evolving understanding of God and how the Universe was created. \nThis half-day retreat includes periods of Centering Prayer.

SUMMARY:The Seven Mansion of the Interior Castle: Teresa of Avila – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The Seven Mansions of the Interior Castle — Teresa of Avila\n Presented by Susan Komis\n Virtual Centering Prayer Retreat via Zoom \nCo-sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of New Orleans\n and the School for Contemplative Living \nJoin us in exploring the Seven Mansions of Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle.\nTeresa is one of Christianity’s great mystics and teachers. The Seven Mansions of the Interior Castle is her final work\nand one of the most profound literary works on contemplation and experiential mysticism. Teresa wrote The Interior\nCastle to describe seven mansions of the inner life with God. Prayer stood at the center of Teresa’s teaching. Her fidelity\nto prayer was a means of deepening her intimate relationship with God. She considered a life of prayer in terms of love. \nTogether we will reflect on the light of Teresa’s timeless insights into the human soul\, its journey towards intimate\nrelationship with God\, and how Teresa’s teaching is relevant to our personal contemporary spiritual journey today. \nThere will be Centering Prayer sessions\, the presentations\, Q & A opportunities\, and small group gatherings via\nbreakout rooms.

SUMMARY:“God is Love\, the Heart of All Creation” Part 2 - via zoom
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Keating with Carl J. Arico\nVideo and Discussion hosted by Kathleen Blank Riether \nThe video series God is Love\, The Heart of All Creation was filmed in Snowmass\, CO\, in 2013. Carl Arico interviewed Thomas Keating about a variety of topics from cosmology\, divine/human evolution\, and unity consciousness\, to silence and centering prayer. Thomas Keating considered this video series as Part 8 in his foundational Spiritual Journey series. \nIn Part 2 of our two part series based on God Is Love\, The Heart of All Creation\, we will begin with Thomas Keating reflecting on the silence in Centering Prayer as the first step in what Christian theology understands as the path of contemplation taking us into divine union. Centering Prayer reduces the obstacles to our awareness of God’s presence and communications to us. Through the regular practice of Centering Prayer\, an attentiveness emerges to the presence of God in all reality and in all the experiences of our daily lives. It releases the positive energies of grace within us that are inaccessible to our conscious minds. As we become increasingly aware of God’s inspirations\, we consciously experience and consent to our creaturehood – our nothingness. In time\, we even embrace our own nothingness\, as we turn our lives over completely to God\, confident in God’s total presence and support. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:“The Welcoming Prayer” - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The Welcoming Prayer is a method of consenting to God’s presence and action in the midst of the ordinary routines of our daily lives. To practice Welcoming allows us to make choices free of the domination of the false self system. We begin to respond rather than automatically react to life on life’s terms. As the originator of Welcoming\, Mary Mrozowski\, stated\, “To welcome and to let go is one of the most radically loving\, faith-filled gestures we can make in each moment of each day. It is an open-hearted embrace of all that is in ourselves and in the world.” \nDuring this three-hour Zoom workshop we will learn the conceptual background\, The Welcoming Prayer practice\, and have time to practice in community. \n

SUMMARY:Presence\, Prayer and Writing from the Heart Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them.\nIf a story comes to you\, care for them.\nAnd learn to give them away where they are needed.\nSometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.”\n– Barry Lopez in Crow and Weasel \nAll of us have myriad stories to tell. Some involve your family history\, spiritual journey\, experiences in Nature or a life-changing situation. Stories can take many form — memoir\, essay\, poem\, series of blog posts\, or journal entries — but the most compelling are the ones written from the heart\, those that touch and move us and sometimes even transform both the writer and reader. Writing from the heart demands attentiveness\, honesty\, courage and a commitment to engage with a creative process that pulls us into the unknown where we are often surprised at what surfaces. It’s a journey of discovery. And what can help are presence and prayer. \nThis writing retreat is structured for those currently working on a project\, those who want to start one\, or simply desire to spend time in beautiful surroundings playing with words. In addition to Centering Prayer sessions — silence can be a portal to the Source of creativity and truth-telling — there will be ample opportunities to write\, walk\, think and just be. \nAnne A. Simpkinson is an award-winning journalist\, editor and writing coach. She and her former husband Chuck founded Common Boundary\, a nonprofit organization that explored the relationship among psychotherapy\, spirituality and creativity. She co-authored Soul Work: A Field Guide for Spiritual Seekers and two anthologies\, Sacred Stories and Nourishing the Soul. When living in New York City\, she rode the media transformation from websites to digital communications in her positions with Beliefnet.com\, Prevention magazine\, WeightWatchers.com and Guideposts. She also served as Communications Director for Mercy by the Sea for several years. Anne has been practicing Centering Prayer (CP) since 1996. An Introductory CP Workshop facilitator\, she leads retreats\, workshops and Quiet Days in New York\, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Along with Claire Rusowicz\, she co-facilitates two weekly Centering Prayer Zoom groups as well as day and weekend retreats.

SUMMARY:Eight-Day Centering Prayer Intensive Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Eight-Day Centering Prayer Intensive Retreat offered from Tuesday\, May 17 to Tuesday\, May 24\, 2022\, provides an opportunity to deepen the practice of Centering Prayer in an atmosphere of silence and community support. This retreat follows the Contemplative Outreach guidelines for an Intensive Retreat including six 30-minute Centering Prayer periods daily. The prayer is supported with viewing and faith sharing on Thomas Keating’s Human Condition teachings from the updated Spiritual Journey series. \nRetreat leaders: Leslee Anne Terpay and Br. Bernard Delcourt are available for soul-friending. \nDuring the retreat\, one will experience integrating contemplation and action through silence\, solitude\, community and the rhythm of this Episcopal Benedictine monastic community’s worship and prayer life including daily Holy Eucharist. An established practice of Centering Prayer for at least 6-months is highly recommended. Anyone who has participated in a Contemplative Outreach Intensive in the past may attend and make this a Post-Intensive by not viewing the videos and adding additional Centering Prayer periods. \nTuesday check-in is from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Vespers begins at 5:00. Dinner then follows. Orientation begins at 7:15. The retreat concludes with lunch on the following Tuesday. (Daily Holy Eucharist is available at 9:00 a.m.). SUMMARY:Centering Prayer and Oneness
DESCRIPTION:“Contemplation…is not a special gift. It is simply seeing form the perspective of oneness\, or in other words\, from the level of our spiritual awareness. It can indeed be practiced\, and over time\, with sincerity and persistence\, it becomes an abiding state of consciousness.”\n― Cynthia Bourgeault\, in Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening \nOur contemplative practice opens up a new way of seeing and being\, acknowledging our oneness with each other\, with the world\, and with God. As we consent to the Spirit\, we consent to the help that is always being offered to us and to our world. \nOur Centering Prayer is an important foundation in this\, and yet it doesn’t end when we get up off the cushion. In all of the times of our day we can continue to offer ourselves to Sacred Unity. Throughout our activity\, and in the evening and at night – we are continually a part of this Oneness. \nJoin us as we offer our beloved being up to God\, sitting together in the quiet\, moving throughout our day\, and entering the evening and night in prayer together. This retreat is suitable for people with a long-time practice of Centering Prayer\, and will also provide guidance for those relatively new to it. We are planning a spacious schedule blanketed in sacred silence so that you will have time to walk the beautiful Mercy grounds\, and to do other deeply relaxing practices that we’ll talk about. Bring a journal and pen if you like. There is a lovely craft room at Mercy Center but bring additional art supplies if you prefer. \nRecommended reading (we will be presenting material from this book):\nCentering Prayer and Inner Awakening by Cynthia Bourgeault \nRetreat Leaders:\nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. These practices encourage us to lean into the Love that is constantly being offered within a relational web of Sacred Unity. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with a background as a therapist and training in a neurophysiology based approach to trauma resolution. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Wisdom Tradition. \nLink to COVID Protocol: https://mercy-center.org/guest-protocol/\nContact Us: 650-340-7474\nMC@sistersofmercy.org\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org\nThese are unprecedented times. SUMMARY:The Way of the Heart: Mysticism Across Spiritual Traditions
DESCRIPTION:How do we awaken the heart and experience life through the heart center? For centuries\, Christian\, Sufi and Hindu mystics have been drawn to the heart as our primary source of spiritual perception and connection within wholeness and relationship. Matthew will weave together teaching and practice from different paths that focus on cultivating our hearts in relationship with the Divine Heart. \nPeriods of Centering Prayer are offered in the morning and afternoon.
