We’ll use some familiar contemplative practices and introduce some new practices for daily life that will help us manifest the fruits of the Spirit during this holy time of year. How can darkness be the place of receptivity to God coming to us as our lives? \nJulie is the author of Contemplative Life: Discovering Our Path into the Heart of God. Julie practices and teaches Centering Prayer and the other contemplative practices outlined in the book. She has been a part of Contemplative Outreach since 1994. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: Lectio Divina and the Four Senses of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:This praying Holy Scripture retreat offers Centering Prayer periods plus presentations based upon Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings on the deepening levels of faith: the Four Senses of Scripture – literal\, allegorical\, behavioral/moral\, and unitive senses. The presentations teach a contemplative way of listening to and reading Scripture known as the ancient monastic practice of Lectio Divina. During the retreat\, one will experience the interplay of the silence of Centering Prayer and praying Holy Scripture combined with the rhythm of this Episcopal Benedictine monastic community’s worship and prayer life including Holy Eucharist. This contemplative retreat welcomes those comfortable with silence and yearning to learn this ancient way of praying rather than studying Holy Scripture. \nCheck-in is from 2:00 to 5:00 pm Tuesday. Vespers begins at 5:00. Supper then follows. Orientation begins at 6:45 pm. The retreat concludes with noon meal on Friday. (Daily Holy Eucharist is available at 9:00 a.m.). The suggested donation for the retreat is $430. The retreat fee includes a single room and all meals. Shared single occupancy bathrooms in the hallways. \nLeslee Anne Terpay: As a Contemplative Outreach commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina\, Leslee shares Fr. DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness is the sixth in a series of eight courses in the Spiritual Journey Series. In this series Fr. Thomas guides the listener toward an understanding of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel and its extraordinary implications and applications for personal freedom and global peace. Fr. Thomas calls this the journey of heartfulness\, and says that Centering Prayer might be thought of as heartfulness. Centering Prayer as contemplative prayer is a reflection on the mysteries of faith that has been digested and reflected upon and expressed in acts of love until it has simplified into a movement of the will that is becoming quasi-permanent – a way of occupying the mind and transferring it to the heart so that with practice it becomes more “heartfulness” than “mindfulness”. \nThis is a nine-week course officially starting on Thursday\, January 9 2025\, at 6:30 pm Mountain Time. \nA wide range of topics is covered in this course. The topics for each week are: \nWeek 1 – The Pursuit of Happiness\nWeek 2 – The Human Condition\nWeek 3 – Centering Prayer\nWeek 4 – Sin\nWeek 5 – Suffering\nWeek 6 – Redemption\nWeek 7 – Love and The Trinity\nWeek 8 – Divine Indwelling\nWeek 9 – Divine Transformation \nEach week\, we will begin with Centering Prayer. Your facilitators will provide an introduction to the topic for the week and we will watch the video (20 to 25 minutes) together. Then we will take a break and you will look over the questions to be discussed in the break-out groups. DESCRIPTION:This retreat\, offered from Tuesday\, February 10 till Friday\, February 13\, 2026\, at Holy Cross Monastery on the Hudson River in New York State\, offers opportunities for both those new to the Centering Prayer and those who have an established practice. During the retreat\, one will experience integrating contemplation and action through silence\, solitude\, community and the rhythm of this Episcopal Benedictine monastic community’s worship and prayer life. \nThe retreat offers two tracks. For those new to Centering Prayer\, the basic essentials of the method and conceptual background of Centering Prayer will be presented. To those who have an established prayer practice\, more time will be available to foster an ever-deepening level of interior silence and awareness of the presence of God in everyday life. This contemplative retreat welcomes both those new to and those comfortable with silence that have a yearning to rediscover this ancient prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplation. \nCheck-in is from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Vespers begin at 5:00. Supper then follows. Orientation begins at 6:45. The retreat concludes with lunch on Friday. (Daily Holy Eucharist is available at 9:00 a.m.). The journey is made more complex because our culture does not support us as we transition from the celebrated stage of youth to elderhood. It is\, therefore\, very important that we find another way—a more “excellent way” as St. Paul said—to traverse the path. \nThis retreat will offer spiritual practices from the disciplines of Centering Prayer and Buddhist meditation that will not only help us navigate the aging process but enable us to thrive in the process. \nMeet the Presenter\nThe Rev. Carlyle Gill has been an Episcopal priest for nearly 50 years and a practitioner of Centering Prayer for 25 years. SUMMARY:5-Day Silent Centering Prayer Post-Intensive Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This retreat will focus on deepening our silence and simplicity and will not include videos or other learning material. Each full day will feature almost four hours of prayer in five sessions lasting from half an hour to an hour and a half (including short contemplative walks). Except for opening and closing times\, we will observe Grand Silence. \nBefore attending the retreat\, you should have an established practice of daily Centering Prayer for at least one year and have attended an Intensive Centering Prayer retreat. The retreat will be held at St. Andrew’s House at the Sacred Waters Center in Union\, WA. Within two hours of Seattle and about halfway between Belfair and Hoodsport\, Saint Andrew’s House is a beautiful log cabin-style lodge with panoramic views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains. \nCost of the retreat is $800.
