SUMMARY:Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer: The End of All that is not Christ - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer\nThe End of All that is not Christ\nDecember 9 8:30-2:30pm Eastern Standard Time \nContemplative Outreach of Columbus is offering a Silent Saturday. A Silent Saturday provides a few hours that are set aside for Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, spiritual teaching and reflection. \n“Come rest awhile with the Lord” in preparation for Advent. Advent begins a new year in the liturgical cycle and we are invited once again to renew our journey by pondering Thomas Merton’s statement: “The Advent Mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not Christ.” Sr. Carol Ann invites us to consider the wonders of the Incarnation. In Jesus\, we are told that God and humanity are meant for each other. We are called to become more fully human as Jesus was fully human. \nSr. Carol Ann Spencer O.P. is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She has led countless workshops and retreats. She is also the founding director of WELLSTREAMS\, a program for becoming a spiritual director\, and the Spirituality Network. The day will begin at 8:30am and last until 2:30pm. EST. \nRegister by sending an email to Bob Gorman (below) and a zoom link and handouts will be sent to you a few days in advance. \nThe event is free. Nondeductible donations to Contemplative Outreach of Columbus to cover costs are welcome. They can be sent to the care of Tom Davis at 844 Franklin Ave Columbus OH 43205.

SUMMARY:Simple Presence - A Contemplative Prayer Experience with the Vision of Contemplative Outreach - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In Simple Presence\, the divine Presence becomes an invitation for our community to listen deeply to the Spirit’s movement and action within. The event will offer a communal prayer experience dedicated to contemplation of the Vision Statement of Contemplative Outreach: “We embrace transformation in Christ\, both in ourselves and in others through the practice of Centering Prayer.” \nEach participant enters into inner awareness individually and then opens to the source of the Presence\, which is shared by other members of the group. The underlying commonality of the intention held is sacred. Simple Presence is being offered to those who are engaged with Contemplative Outreach on any level or simply have an interest in this community. It will be assumed that participants have a regular Centering Prayer practice and are familiar with Lectio Divina and the Welcoming Prayer. \nAlan Krema will lead this workshop and it will include embodied prayer\, chant\, reflective readings\, Centering Prayer\, Welcoming Prayer\, and wisdom sharing. Come prepared to sit in Simple Presence with the sacred words of the Vision. This prayerful event will be approximately two hours in length and will be presented online as Zoom gathering. \nPlease use the link below to register

SUMMARY:For God’s Grace and Peace: A Special Call to Centering Prayer - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In this universal time of civic discord\, disease\, fear for our environment and dire poverty\, feeling powerless is especially hard to bear. But Thomas Keating often said: Silent prayer in community holds transformative power. And as people on a contemplative path\, we know that meeting God in silence does more than refresh us. It is our salvation\, our strength. \nContemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington invites you to join in a group Centering Prayer on Thursday\, November 3rd at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Our format is simple — an opening prayer\, Centering Prayer for a half-hour\, then the Lord’s Prayer. \nJoin Zoom Mtg: tinyurl.com/COMWCall2Prayer\nMeeting ID: 653 204 0951 Passcode: 292392\nProgram questions? SUMMARY:Father Vincent Pizzuto - Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation - a hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and Online via Zoom videoconference. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided for in-person participants. This event will include two sessions of Centering Prayer in additional to Father Pizzuto’s talk. \nFather Vincent Pizzuto will be joining us for a full-day event titled “Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation.” In this presentation\, Father Pizzuto will be speaking to us about Jesus’ coming as a manifestation of a whole new world view: the Kingdom of God. \nThe gospel narratives are replete with the theme of transgression. Routinely\, Jesus drew his teachings and parables from the natural world\, familiar to those around him\, and used the most mundane images to shock his listeners into seeing the new world that was breaking upon them. In this new world—the kingdom of God\, as he called it—the very idea of holiness and what it meant to be holy was radically challenged and transformed. No longer was holiness to be identified with something “set apart\,” as the original Semitic root (qdš) implies. Rather\, the in-breaking of the kingdom was just that\, the realm of God breaking into the realm of humanity. This is why Jesus’ actions and teachings consistently emphasized the spirit of the law over the letter. He insisted that no religious observance was of greater importance than the practice of compassion and indiscriminate love for all. \nThus\, not only does Jesus transgress social and religious boundaries in his teaching and actions\, but so too as the “Incarnate One” does he transgress the very boundaries between heaven and earth. Throughout our Retreat\, Fr. Vincent will examine this theme of “transgression” in the gospels as a lens through which to understand and embody an authentic contemplative Christian discipleship in the modern world. We will gradually unfold contemplative discipleship as a call\, a vocation\, that begins as an encounter with Christ that is as communal as it is personal. It begins with the end of my world and the in-breaking of the kingdom. It begins with a death to myself\, and the rising of Christ within. And thus\, we will come to see that contemplative discipleship is thoroughly cruciform\, patterned on the paschal mystery of Christ’s dying and rising. It begins and ends in paradox. In order to live fully in Christ\, I must lose my life for the sake of the Gospel. \nAbout Father Vincent \nFather Vincent Pizzuto\, Ph.D. is Professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Mysticism in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. in New Testament Exegesis from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (2003). He has since published and presented internationally in the areas of New Testament Christology\, ecological discipleship\, marriage equality\, inter-religious dialogue\, Christian mysticism and contemplative Christian spirituality. In 2018 he published his second book\, Contemplating Christ: The Gospels and the Interior Life\, with Liturgical Press\, to be released in Spanish\, Contemplar a Cristo: Los Evangelios y la vida interior\, in January 2022 by Desclée de Brouwer. As an Episcopal priest Fr. Vincent serves as Vicar of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church and Retreat House in Inverness\, California. Working for the advancement of contemplative Christianity\, he has reinvigorated the mission and ministry of St. Columba’s through the introduction of contemplative eucharistic liturgies\, public lectures\, online courses\, directed retreats\, thought provoking sermons\, an online blog and a weekly online study of his book through the Meditation Chapel. \nTime listed are Mountain Time \nRegister using the link below

SUMMARY:Fall Day of Prayer with Fr. Carl Arico - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Dying to New Life: Journey Through Aging” \nI am telling you the truth a grain of wheat remains no more than a single grain unless it is dropped into the ground and dies. If it does die then it produces many grains. ~ John 12:24 \nLet us explore the practical implications of the wisdom contained in these two passages. What are the elements in our life and the practical rhythms that we can enter into each day to live out the implications found in these Scriptures? \nFr. Carl: “I remember an interviewer asking Fr Thomas Keating\, ‘You seem to be implying that our life is a life of diminishment. That’s not going to attract too many people.’ There was a long pause and he answered as I remember it\, ‘Well it’s not my idea’ with a twinkle in his eye and a wonderful smile.” \nLet us look at that through the lens of healing\, forgiveness but above all the celebration of life.

SUMMARY:Mystic Series: Gift of Tears
DESCRIPTION:In-person and via Zoom at the Center for Contemplative Living in Elm Grove\, Wisconsin\, USA \nIn ancient times contemplatives aspired to the Gift of Tears. Here and there it is treasured even today. Mingled perhaps with some ambivalence. We will touch on several perspectives of the nature of this delicate Gift: historical\, contemporary\, psychological\, and spiritual. We’ll also look at the different types and purposes of tears\, how the Gift manifests\, and key figures who’ve had the Gift of Tears. \nThe evening will begin with a 20-minute Centering Prayer sit\, followed by the presentation\, and time for Q&A and reflective discussion.  If you have not had previous exposure to Centering Prayer\, please let us know beforehand and we will arrange to give you a brief explanation of the method a few minutes before the event begins. \nPRESENTER: Debbie Harmon has practiced Centering Prayer for over 30 years. Since the 1990s\, she has been involved with Contemplative Outreach in the Midwest\, spoken on a variety of spiritual topics\, facilitated groups and retreats\, and been a commissioned presenter of the Introductory Centering Prayer Workshop. SUMMARY:Contemplative Group Spiritual Direction via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Group Spiritual Direction via Zoom\nA conversation with spiritual directors Carol Fryer and Lindsay Boyer\nSaturday\, March 26th\, 2pm to 3:30pm Eastern Time \nGroup spiritual direction can be a wonderful experience for contemplative practitioners who would like to go deeper into their practice. It can be easily adapted to the Zoom format. Spiritual director Carol Fryer will describe her experience of leading group spiritual direction on Zoom with participants from Zoom Centering Prayer groups. She will present her format and group guidelines and answer questions about how to get started and how spiritual directors can collaborate with Centering Prayer facilitators to set up spiritual direction groups. Our hope is to provide a template that might be helpful for people who are considering doing group spiritual direction online\, encourage those who are experienced at group spiritual direction but are hesitant about using Zoom\, and provide a forum for others who may already be doing group spiritual direction online and have wisdom to offer the Contemplative community. A representative of the Shalem group spiritual direction program will be on hand to answer questions about their program. We will begin with 10 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nRegister here: https://form.jotform.com/220324228490146 \nAbout Rev. Carol E. A. SUMMARY:Icons as Portals for Unlocking the Contemplative Heart via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mary Atalo\, a half-day retreat sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington. \nIcons\, as opposed to paintings\, are considered as “writings of the heart” which open the contemplative to “Behold” the Glory of the Lord. Many paintings can aid in our “seeing\,” but icons allow us to “behold.” In our contemplative prayer\, first through a silent “gazing” at the image in Visio Divina\, another realm begins to appear which lures us to step beyond the gaze into the ineffable realm of the Divine\, where “Beholding” is the work of silence.” This “Beholding” transfigures the way we see the world\, how we act in it\, and conveys the great hope of God’s enduring love and wisdom as promised in the Covenant of Peace. \nIn this mini retreat\, we will practice contemplative “Beholding” through Visio Divina of icons from the ancient Orthodox Akathistos Hymn\, The O Antiphons\, The Litany of Loretto\, and the Old Testament Wisdom Books. We shall see that there are really two Christmas stories of Incarnation occurring during this season: one occurring in time and space as the incarnation of Christ; another occurring in eternity\, as the incarnation of the Divine. We will follow the Contemplative Outreach guidelines for Visio Divina. \nRev. Dr. Mary Atalo is an Archpriest of the Wisdom tradition in the independent Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch\, and Associate Dean of Sophia Divinity School\, the Church’s distant learning Seminary. She is the rector of a newly formed church\, “Our Lady of the Bridge” in Union Bridge\, MD\, a sacramental and contemplative community in the Christian mystical tradition. She had a former 30-year career as an oceanographer\, and seeks to bridge science and religion. In 2020\, she led the COMW Advent mini-retreat\, and has been an advocate of the contemplative prayer practices of Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. William Meninger in daily life.

SUMMARY:John of the Cross & The Song of Songs: Mysticism\, Eroticism\, and Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:In these sessions\, Netanel Miles-Yépez (who shares the same surname as his subject\, Juan de Yépes) will discuss how the Spanish saint\, better known as John of the Cross\, gives instruction in contemplative prayer in terms that seem strikingly similar to Centering Prayer\, and uses the erotic imagery of the Song of Songs to describe the mystical experiences which often follow such prayer. Using translations of the Song of Songs and John of the Cross from Miles-Yépez’s own book\, My Love Stands Behind a Wall: A Translation of the Song of Songs and Other Poems\, he will lead us through the mystical landscape of the great poet and saint\, and lead Centering Prayer for us from John’s teachings in The Living Flame of Love. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Introduction Zoom Retreat with Fr. Jos+
DESCRIPTION:Fr. Thomas Keating describes Centering Prayer as the keystone of a comprehensive commitment to the contemplative dimension of the Gospel\, manifesting as a deepening union with Christ\, and practical caring for others. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer\, Introductory Program
DESCRIPTION:On Demand Retreat: This webcast is available at any time you are ready to take the program. There are several other bundled studies available in one registration. You can register for the event at:  \nhttps://retreats.houseofblessings.org/p/cp \nTraining in silent prayer: Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer. In this prayer\, we experience God's presence within us. It is closer than breathing\, closer than thinking\, closer than consciousness itself. This prayer form\, as Fr. Keating says\, is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. \nCentering Prayer Adds depth to prayer life: Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Centering Prayer adds depth of meaning to all prayer. It facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer – verbal\, mental or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. \nMeant for all people: This method is open to all people. There are no requirements or pre-requisites\, only your willingness to spend a few minutes twice a day.  \nWebcast: This webcast is available at any time you are ready to take the program.
