SUMMARY:Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer: The End of All that is not Christ - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer\nThe End of All that is not Christ\nDecember 9 8:30-2:30pm Eastern Standard Time \nContemplative Outreach of Columbus is offering a Silent Saturday. A Silent Saturday provides a few hours that are set aside for Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, spiritual teaching and reflection. \n“Come rest awhile with the Lord” in preparation for Advent. Advent begins a new year in the liturgical cycle and we are invited once again to renew our journey by pondering Thomas Merton’s statement: “The Advent Mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not Christ.” Sr. Carol Ann invites us to consider the wonders of the Incarnation. In Jesus\, we are told that God and humanity are meant for each other. We are called to become more fully human as Jesus was fully human. \nSr. Carol Ann Spencer O.P. is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She has led countless workshops and retreats. She is also the founding director of WELLSTREAMS\, a program for becoming a spiritual director\, and the Spirituality Network. The day will begin at 8:30am and last until 2:30pm. EST. \nRegister by sending an email to Bob Gorman (below) and a zoom link and handouts will be sent to you a few days in advance. \nThe event is free. Nondeductible donations to Contemplative Outreach of Columbus to cover costs are welcome. They can be sent to the care of Tom Davis at 844 Franklin Ave Columbus OH 43205.

SUMMARY:The Deserts Roots of Contemplative Prayer: Emptiness\, Silence & Hiddenness of Self - in person and via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Belden C. Lane\, Ph.D. has long been fascinated by the relationship between geography and spirituality—asking how the place we live has an effect on our perception of the spiritual life. The desert\, for example\, is a place of scarcity\, silence\, and the deep solitude of the heart. It’s what drew the Desert Fathers and Mothers to the Egyptian desert in the 4th century. This is where the practice of contemplative prayer had its beginnings. We’ll look at three themes in the stories told by the early desert monks: the simplicity of language\, radical forgiveness\, and hiddenness of the self. \nThis event is in person and via Zoom. It will include a time of Centering Prayer. \nPlease see the link below to register. Donations are welcomed!

SUMMARY:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\, with Mary Dwyer (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\nwith Mary Dwyer\nAn entry into the Advent season\nThursday December 4 via Zoom\n1-2pm ET (6pm GMT\, noon CT\, 11am MT\, 10am PT)\nfree; suggested donation $25 \nProgram description: \nOur beloved teacher\, Thomas Keating\, was known to say\, “If God were not animating us at every millisecond of our existence\, we would be a grease spot!”  What does this really mean? How do we live this amid the ordinary routines of daily life?  How can we live into a reality that is larger\, freer\, and more hopeful than the psychological experience of this moment?  Join us as we explore TK’s “Grease Spot Theology.” \n+ \nMary Dwyer will explore how this understanding can be a radical and practical way to know God is with us as we move through our ordinary lives. It’s an invitation to practice the presence of God in each moment and know we are never alone\, never separate from God. Mary will also relate this understanding to our practice of Centering Prayer and the Welcoming Prayer. \nThis is a timely practice for the Advent season – to know the Incarnation in us\, as us. \nThere will be time to submit questions for Mary to address near the end of the hour. This event will also be recorded. \nAbout Mary Dwyer \nMary Dwyer is a long-time student of Fr. Thomas Keating and has been practicing Centering Prayer since the 1980s.  In the early 1990’s\, she lived at Chrysalis House\, a contemplative live-in community experiment blessed by Fr. Thomas in Warwick\, New York. The community lived according to a rule of life\, and became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of Contemplative Outreach’s growth.  It was her experience at Chyrsalis House – what she refers to as her “inpatient” or “residential treatment time” – that proved to her that a life of prayer\, consent and practice is real\, stable and deeply rewarding.  Mary Mrozowski taught her that a devoted life of prayer was the real work of life; what we did the rest of the time was just how we made a living. \nMary is currently in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker in the Erie\, Pennsylvania area. Mary devotes her time between private practice and giving retreats and workshops on behalf of Contemplative Outreach throughout the US and internationally. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Practice Soul Friending\, Be a Soul Friend (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Practice Soul Friending\, Be a Soul Friend\nwith Cherry Haisten\nWednesday May 13\, 2026 via Zoom\n2-3pm Eastern Time (7pm UTC+1\, 1pm Central\, noon Mountain\, 11am Pacific)\nFree; suggested donation $25\nThis event will be recorded \nWhen it’s hard to know where we are on the spiritual journey\, hard to hear the still small voice\, hard to consent to God’s presence and action\, a companion—a soul friend—can help. In the Contemplative Outreach community and in small groups of Centering Prayer practitioners\, soul friending has always played a role. \nThomas Keating hoped that all Centering Prayer groups would evolve into soul friending groups in which participants could experience friendship as “a step toward the love and knowledge of God.” Aelred of Rievaulx called this kind of companioning “spiritual friendship.” In a developing relationship\, friendship may lead to intimacy\, to the deep knowledge of the Divine at the center of all creation. The practice of Centering Prayer opens us to a deeper awareness of the Divine through our repeated consent; in a group we can practice consenting to the presence and action of God in each other. The fruit of this practice may be an increased ability to see through the surface to the Christ within our companions and ultimately within each human being. \n“[T]he awareness of the deepest level in us is also an awareness of the deepest level in everyone else\,” wrote Thomas Keating in Open Mind\, Open Heart. “The insight into Christ dwelling in every other person enables one to express charity toward others . . . . Instead of seeing only someone’s personality\, race\, nationality\, gender\, status\, or characteristics (which you like or do not like)\, you see what is deepest—one’s union . . . with Christ” (103). \nDuring  this hour\,  we will explore a method for practicing soul friending\, the important roles of both speaker and listener in a group\, and the fruits that ripple out from our practice. There will also be a time for questions and comments. There is much to explore about soul friending beyond this brief time\, but may you leave inspired to practice soul friending on your own and to share the practice with companions. \n“Every particular thou is a glimpse through to the eternal Thou.”            \n– Martin Buber \nPlease register below. \nAbout Cherry Haisten \nCherry is a longtime presenter of workshops on Centering Prayer and Welcoming Prayer\, which she has regularly practiced for over three decades. She has led workshops and retreats in many places around the U.S. and in British Columbia. With her colleagues on the Welcoming Prayer Service Team\, she worked to compose materials for the Spirituality and Practice online Welcoming Prayer courses and contributes to the Welcoming Prayer team’s writing projects. \nAn English major and former writing instructor\, Cherry went back to school in middle age for a Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry. At this Jesuit school\, her program included an emphasis on Ignatian direction and discernment. Combining this training with her study of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel and Benedictine spirituality has been a joy. Through Living Flame and other programs\, Cherry is delighted to pass on to other seekers something of what she has been blessed to receive. \nimage credit: mbolina/Getty Images
