SUMMARY:Introduction to the Welcoming Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Martha\, Martha\, you are worried and anxious about many things … but one thing is needful.”\n-Luke 10:42 \nThe Mary and Martha story is an example of the focus we can bring to everyday life activities. As the Welcoming Prayer 40-day practice booklet reminds us: “To assist this process\, we need complementary practices. Centering Prayer teaches us consenting in stillness; the Welcoming Prayer practice teaches us consenting in activity.” \n“The Welcoming Prayer practice is a way of letting go into the present moment in the ordinary routines of daily life. It is used when your needs for security\, affection and control are frustrated or gratified and cause emotional reactions. It is a way of turning everything over to God …” Thomas Keating\, Open Mind\, Open Heart \nThe presenters are part of the community of the Center for Contemplative Living in Denver CO. Over the years they have been blessed through the presence and teachings of Thomas Keating OCSO\, and Mary Mrozowski as well as many other spiritual leaders. \nWe hope to see you at our workshop. May you be open to including the Welcoming Prayer in your invitation to the Holy Spirit to extend the walls of your inner room to all of life. \nTime listed is Mountain Daylight Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the website link below to register.

SUMMARY:Rabbi Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman: Psalms as Sources of Personal Solace\, Interfaith Solidarity\, Service and Joy - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Our Spring Conference is a hybrid presentation conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and online via Zoom. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided for in-person participants. The conference is a community fund-raising event for The Center and helps fund program development\, provide scholarships\, fuel community outreach and maintain our spiritual home. We hope you can join us. \nDescription of Talk: \nThis year’s spring conference\, “Psalms as Sources of Personal Solace\, Interfaith Solidarity\, Service and Joy\,” features teachers and musicians\, Rabbi Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman\, sharing compelling insights about the psalms\, practical guidance for contemplative practice\, and meaningful small group interactions to foster our sense of community and belonging. We’ll enjoy gorgeous\, heartful\, prayerful soulful music and\, of course\, space for sacred silence. Rabbi Jamie and Laura are no strangers to The Center for Contemplative Living\, having led sessions (and a seder) in recent years that have been very well received. \nPresentation topics include: \nReclaiming Psalm Recitation as Spiritual Practice — An overview of the types of psalms and their uses: poetry\, peace (Saul)\, prophesy and mystical union.\nChristian Perspectives — Solitude & Silence\, Solidarity & Service.\nPsalm 23: Recitation as Meditation — A deep dive into “The Lord is my shepherd….”\nTwo sessions of Centering Prayer will be included in the conference. \nNote: We recognize the tremendous uncertainty and division in our country right now and want to suggest that The Psalms have been a gateway for healing and reconciliation throughout the ages and can be for us now. This presentation will take place in proximity to countrywide protests as well as oppression and violence in numerous places in the world. We invite you to be with us this day to hold it all—together—as we allow the psalms and music to take us deeper into the pain and grief of this time and transform it into love for the benefit of all. \n“We are called to this journey not just for our own personal growth\, but also for the sake of the whole human community.”\n– Fr. Thomas Keating \nAbout Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman \nJamie Arnold has served as the rabbi for Congregation Beth Evergreen since 2005 and is a core faculty member of The Kabbalah Experience in Denver. For the last five years\, he has partnered with the gifted musician and prayer leader\, Laura Berman to create unforgettable\, transformative experiences for interfaith groups. Laura currently serves as the Music Director for the flagship Mile Hi Church in Lakewood. \nRecording Note: All registrants will receive access to the Zoom recording link. This recording will be available within two weeks of the event. \nTimes Listed are Mountain Time\, Denver\, Colorado \nRegister using the website link below.

SUMMARY:The Welcoming Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary Dwyer \nAs a companion to Centering Prayer\, Welcoming Prayer focuses on the disturbances that beset our daily life and allows us freely to acknowledge and surrender their power to God. We begin to respond rather than automatically react to life on life’s terms. As the originator of Welcoming Prayer\, Mary Mrozowski\, said\, “To welcome and to let go is one of the most radically loving\, faith-filled gestures we can make in each moment of each day. It is an open-hearted embrace of all that is in ourselves and in the world.” During this half-day online retreat\, we will learn about the conceptual background and the method of The Welcoming Prayer\, and we will practice it in community. \nMeet Mary Dwyer \nAn early student of Fr. Thomas Keating\, Mary has been practicing Centering Prayer since the 1980s. In the early 1990s\, she lived at Chrysalis House\, a contemplative community in Warwick\, New York\, blessed by Fr. Keating\, with housemates who included Mary Mrozowski\, David Frenette and Cathy McCarthy. The community became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of Contemplative Outreach’s growth. Mary calls this period her “inpatient” or “residential treatment time” that proved to her that a life of prayer\, consent\, and practice is real\, stable\, and deeply rewarding. \nMary has given years of service to Contemplative Outreach\, Ltd.\, including as a member of the Contemplative Outreach Faculty and Gift Committee\, coordinator for the Living Flame program\, and coordinator of the Miami Chapter. In January she stepped down as chairperson of the COL Governing Board. She continues to serve the Finance/Legal Team and the Welcoming Prayer Service Team. \nMary now divides her time between private practice as a licensed clinical social worker and leadership of retreats and workshops on behalf of Contemplative Outreach throughout the US and internationally. She lives with her husband in Erie\, PA. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Creating Self-Compassion Through Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Blair Ashby over six Thursday sessions \nA foundational gift of practicing Centering Prayer is that we also begin caring for our mental and emotional well-being during our prayer sits. Fortunately\, this is also one definition of self-compassion. Frequently\, we start noticing this gift with a simple thought like\, “my days feel better since I began Centering Prayer.” Centering Prayer creates self-compassion because it requires us to learn and repeat the process of awareness (being present)\, acceptance\, and letting go while consenting to the presence and action of the Divine within us. \nWhat is happening in our brains biologically as we repeat this process of awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go? How does this process impact our mental and emotional well-being? The good news is when we do Centering Prayer\, the work of the Spirit is teaching us self-compassion\, and this class will help us understand some of the transformations enacted in this process. Finally\, by aiding our developing awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go\, the course will also offer us additional skills to increase compassion toward ourselves and others. \nOver the six weeks\, we will explore the physical changes Centering Prayer brings about in our brains. Then\, we will explore the corresponding mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformations resulting from those changes. Most importantly\, in every class\, we will practice those tools for creating self-compassion by discussing what we experience; we will learn from each other. Through this weekly repetition\, participants will habituate new ways of caring for themselves. As we practice\, our lives will feel more meaningful\, grounded\, and empowered to share ourselves in the world through God-given grace. This class will include session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Blair Ashby \nIn 1994\, Contemplative Outreach International asked Blair to transfer the Christian Contemplative Heritage video series to audio cassettes. In the first fifteen minutes of the introductory tape\, Fr. Thomas said so much about God and reality that Blair’s head exploded and unknowingly germinated a desire to experience and eventually teach this God-created reality. In 1997\, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado asked Blair to record Fr. Thomas live\, and Blair has been recording the annual conferences and fall retreats ever since. Through personal relationships with Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. Tony D’Souza (Anthony DeMello’s apprentice)\, and the dozens of spiritual teachers he has recorded\, Blair has gained deep contemplative insights. He has practiced Centering Prayer and self-compassion for the past twenty-eight years. \nThis is a six-week class\, offered on Thursday mornings\, October 9 – November 13\, 2025\nTimes listed are mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Summit via Zoom: "Learning to See in the Dark"
DESCRIPTION:Learning to See in the Dark\nA 2-day Journey of Opening to Mystical Hope in a Collective Dark Night \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if the darkness we face—alone and together—helps us uncover the hope already within us? \nIn a time when uncertainty\, division\, and collective weariness touch nearly every soul\, many of us find ourselves navigating both personal shadows and a world that feels increasingly dim. Yet the contemplative path reminds us that even in the darkest places\, something tender and resilient is already at work within us. \nThis year’s 5th Annual Centering Prayer Summit offers a sacred space to meet this moment with honesty and openness. Together we will explore how the dark night—both personal & collective—can become a place of awakening rather than despair\, a place where the deeper Light that has never stopped shining\, begins to make itself known. \nThrough shared stillness\, in-depth teaching\, and real-time interaction\, you’ll experience how Centering Prayer opens us to the quiet hope already alive within: a hope not dependent on circumstances\, but rooted in the Presence that holds us all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, schedule and to register\, please see the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a way to explore or deepen your relationship with God? \nIn our introductory workshop to Centering Prayer\, you will discover a centuries-old prayer method. Centering Prayer consists of simply sitting in silence with God—beyond thoughts\, words\, and emotions—and opening our mind\, heart and whole being to the Ultimate Mystery. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Centering Prayer\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow initiates. \nCentering Prayer is based on a Christian contemplative practice first described in The Cloud of Unknowing\, written in the latter half of the 14th Century. It calls one to abandon any consideration of God’s attributes and actions\, and to surrender to The Creator’s influence in our lives. \n It is a very personal prayer practice but is also practiced in groups. It opens one to God’s infinite love and power to heal\, and opens the door to other related prayer practices around forgiveness\, and dealing with painful situations and emotions. \nTime listed for the workshop are Mountain Time. \nClick on the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Heartfulness: Transformation in Christ – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness is the sixth in a series of eight courses in the Spiritual Journey Series. In this series Fr. Thomas guides the listener toward an understanding of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel and its extraordinary implications and applications for personal freedom and global peace. Fr. Thomas calls this the journey of heartfulness\, and says that Centering Prayer might be thought of as heartfulness. Centering Prayer as contemplative prayer is a reflection on the mysteries of faith that has been digested and reflected upon and expressed in acts of love until it has simplified into a movement of the will that is becoming quasi-permanent – a way of occupying the mind and transferring it to the heart so that with practice it becomes more “heartfulness” than “mindfulness”. \nThis is a nine-week course officially starting on Thursday\, January 9 2025\, at 6:30 pm Mountain Time. \nA wide range of topics is covered in this course. The topics for each week are: \nWeek 1 – The Pursuit of Happiness\nWeek 2 – The Human Condition\nWeek 3 – Centering Prayer\nWeek 4 – Sin\nWeek 5 – Suffering\nWeek 6 – Redemption\nWeek 7 – Love and The Trinity\nWeek 8 – Divine Indwelling\nWeek 9 – Divine Transformation \nEach week\, we will begin with Centering Prayer. Your facilitators will provide an introduction to the topic for the week and we will watch the video (20 to 25 minutes) together. Then we will take a break and you will look over the questions to be discussed in the break-out groups. Discussion will take place in the break-out groups and we will gather together once again to close out the class. \nTime Listed are Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the website link below to register. SUMMARY:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\, with Mary Dwyer (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\nwith Mary Dwyer\nAn entry into the Advent season\nThursday December 4 via Zoom\n1-2pm ET (6pm GMT\, noon CT\, 11am MT\, 10am PT)\nfree; suggested donation $25 \nProgram description: \nOur beloved teacher\, Thomas Keating\, was known to say\, “If God were not animating us at every millisecond of our existence\, we would be a grease spot!”  What does this really mean? How do we live this amid the ordinary routines of daily life?  How can we live into a reality that is larger\, freer\, and more hopeful than the psychological experience of this moment?  Join us as we explore TK’s “Grease Spot Theology.” \n+ \nMary Dwyer will explore how this understanding can be a radical and practical way to know God is with us as we move through our ordinary lives. It’s an invitation to practice the presence of God in each moment and know we are never alone\, never separate from God. Mary will also relate this understanding to our practice of Centering Prayer and the Welcoming Prayer. \nThis is a timely practice for the Advent season – to know the Incarnation in us\, as us. \nThere will be time to submit questions for Mary to address near the end of the hour. This event will also be recorded. \nAbout Mary Dwyer \nMary Dwyer is a long-time student of Fr. Thomas Keating and has been practicing Centering Prayer since the 1980s.  In the early 1990’s\, she lived at Chrysalis House\, a contemplative live-in community experiment blessed by Fr. Thomas in Warwick\, New York. The community lived according to a rule of life\, and became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of Contemplative Outreach’s growth.  It was her experience at Chyrsalis House – what she refers to as her “inpatient” or “residential treatment time” – that proved to her that a life of prayer\, consent and practice is real\, stable and deeply rewarding.  Mary Mrozowski taught her that a devoted life of prayer was the real work of life; what we did the rest of the time was just how we made a living. \nMary is currently in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker in the Erie\, Pennsylvania area. Mary devotes her time between private practice and giving retreats and workshops on behalf of Contemplative Outreach throughout the US and internationally. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:God is Love – The Heart of All Creation - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:God is Love: The Heart of All Creation Series continues and builds on the works of Thomas Keating over the past 30+ years\, beginning with the Spiritual Journey series. It offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that at once integrates the sciences\, religion and humankind’s place in the cosmos as divine in origin\, unifying in purpose\, unfolding in its grandeur. \nThis nine-week God is Love video series is Fr. Thomas Keating’s latest in the Spiritual Journey Series. It is a masterful overview of how we can grow and deepen our relationship with God and how God manifests through us. The presentations both motivate and inspire us to be faithful to the Centering Prayer practice. \nThomas also shares how God invites us to draw closer to Him and to allow God to transform us through Centering Prayer. This is a “must attend” series\, especially for those who have been doing the practice for some time. Class session will begin with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nThis is a nine-week class\, offered on Thursday evenings\, September 25 – November 20\, 2025 \nTimes listed are Mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.
