SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Summit via Zoom: "Learning to See in the Dark"
DESCRIPTION:Learning to See in the Dark\nA 2-day Journey of Opening to Mystical Hope in a Collective Dark Night \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if the darkness we face—alone and together—helps us uncover the hope already within us? \nIn a time when uncertainty\, division\, and collective weariness touch nearly every soul\, many of us find ourselves navigating both personal shadows and a world that feels increasingly dim. Yet the contemplative path reminds us that even in the darkest places\, something tender and resilient is already at work within us. \nThis year’s 5th Annual Centering Prayer Summit offers a sacred space to meet this moment with honesty and openness. Together we will explore how the dark night—both personal & collective—can become a place of awakening rather than despair\, a place where the deeper Light that has never stopped shining\, begins to make itself known. \nThrough shared stillness\, in-depth teaching\, and real-time interaction\, you’ll experience how Centering Prayer opens us to the quiet hope already alive within: a hope not dependent on circumstances\, but rooted in the Presence that holds us all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, schedule and to register\, please see the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a way to explore or deepen your relationship with God? \nIn our introductory workshop to Centering Prayer\, you will discover a centuries-old prayer method. Centering Prayer consists of simply sitting in silence with God—beyond thoughts\, words\, and emotions—and opening our mind\, heart and whole being to the Ultimate Mystery. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Centering Prayer\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow initiates. \nCentering Prayer is based on a Christian contemplative practice first described in The Cloud of Unknowing\, written in the latter half of the 14th Century. It calls one to abandon any consideration of God’s attributes and actions\, and to surrender to The Creator’s influence in our lives. \n It is a very personal prayer practice but is also practiced in groups. It opens one to God’s infinite love and power to heal\, and opens the door to other related prayer practices around forgiveness\, and dealing with painful situations and emotions. \nTime listed for the workshop are Mountain Time. \nClick on the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Heartfulness: Transformation in Christ – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness is the sixth in a series of eight courses in the Spiritual Journey Series. In this series Fr. Thomas guides the listener toward an understanding of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel and its extraordinary implications and applications for personal freedom and global peace. Fr. Thomas calls this the journey of heartfulness\, and says that Centering Prayer might be thought of as heartfulness. Centering Prayer as contemplative prayer is a reflection on the mysteries of faith that has been digested and reflected upon and expressed in acts of love until it has simplified into a movement of the will that is becoming quasi-permanent – a way of occupying the mind and transferring it to the heart so that with practice it becomes more “heartfulness” than “mindfulness”. \nThis is a nine-week course officially starting on Thursday\, January 9 2025\, at 6:30 pm Mountain Time. \nA wide range of topics is covered in this course. The topics for each week are: \nWeek 1 – The Pursuit of Happiness\nWeek 2 – The Human Condition\nWeek 3 – Centering Prayer\nWeek 4 – Sin\nWeek 5 – Suffering\nWeek 6 – Redemption\nWeek 7 – Love and The Trinity\nWeek 8 – Divine Indwelling\nWeek 9 – Divine Transformation \nEach week\, we will begin with Centering Prayer. Your facilitators will provide an introduction to the topic for the week and we will watch the video (20 to 25 minutes) together. Then we will take a break and you will look over the questions to be discussed in the break-out groups. Discussion will take place in the break-out groups and we will gather together once again to close out the class. \nTime Listed are Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the website link below to register. SUMMARY:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\, with Mary Dwyer (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Grease Spot Theology: Living It Out in Everyday Life\nwith Mary Dwyer\nAn entry into the Advent season\nThursday December 4 via Zoom\n1-2pm ET (6pm GMT\, noon CT\, 11am MT\, 10am PT)\nfree; suggested donation $25 \nProgram description: \nOur beloved teacher\, Thomas Keating\, was known to say\, “If God were not animating us at every millisecond of our existence\, we would be a grease spot!”  What does this really mean? How do we live this amid the ordinary routines of daily life?  How can we live into a reality that is larger\, freer\, and more hopeful than the psychological experience of this moment?  Join us as we explore TK’s “Grease Spot Theology.” \n+ \nMary Dwyer will explore how this understanding can be a radical and practical way to know God is with us as we move through our ordinary lives. It’s an invitation to practice the presence of God in each moment and know we are never alone\, never separate from God. Mary will also relate this understanding to our practice of Centering Prayer and the Welcoming Prayer. \nThis is a timely practice for the Advent season – to know the Incarnation in us\, as us. \nThere will be time to submit questions for Mary to address near the end of the hour. This event will also be recorded. \nAbout Mary Dwyer \nMary Dwyer is a long-time student of Fr. Thomas Keating and has been practicing Centering Prayer since the 1980s.  In the early 1990’s\, she lived at Chrysalis House\, a contemplative live-in community experiment blessed by Fr. Thomas in Warwick\, New York. The community lived according to a rule of life\, and became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of Contemplative Outreach’s growth.  It was her experience at Chyrsalis House – what she refers to as her “inpatient” or “residential treatment time” – that proved to her that a life of prayer\, consent and practice is real\, stable and deeply rewarding.  Mary Mrozowski taught her that a devoted life of prayer was the real work of life; what we did the rest of the time was just how we made a living. \nMary is currently in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker in the Erie\, Pennsylvania area. Mary devotes her time between private practice and giving retreats and workshops on behalf of Contemplative Outreach throughout the US and internationally. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:God is Love – The Heart of All Creation - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:God is Love: The Heart of All Creation Series continues and builds on the works of Thomas Keating over the past 30+ years\, beginning with the Spiritual Journey series. It offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that at once integrates the sciences\, religion and humankind’s place in the cosmos as divine in origin\, unifying in purpose\, unfolding in its grandeur. \nThis nine-week God is Love video series is Fr. Thomas Keating’s latest in the Spiritual Journey Series. It is a masterful overview of how we can grow and deepen our relationship with God and how God manifests through us. The presentations both motivate and inspire us to be faithful to the Centering Prayer practice. \nThomas also shares how God invites us to draw closer to Him and to allow God to transform us through Centering Prayer. This is a “must attend” series\, especially for those who have been doing the practice for some time. Class session will begin with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nThis is a nine-week class\, offered on Thursday evenings\, September 25 – November 20\, 2025 \nTimes listed are Mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. SUMMARY:Integrating Mind\, Body\, Spirit with Centering Prayer - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Christine O’Brien and Eric Peter – This session provides you with practical exercises to augment your Centering Prayer practice and maintain a reservoir of connection to oneself and the Divine Indwelling. Simple routines proven to calm the nervous system and focus on the heart can release past hurts and traumas that may exist beyond our awareness. You don’t necessarily have to re-live these events\, or talk about them\, to release them. Christine and Eric will explain the science of how and why these practices work. Then\, we will perform them together so you will leave with practical techniques to help slow your reactionary false-self programs. \nYou will learn: \nAbout post-traumatic growth\nActive practices to integrate into your day to regain your center\nHow to achieve heart coherence and why it leads to inner security and stability\nVestibule practices to use before your centering prayer sit that may deepen your experience \nThis event will include a session of Centering Prayer. \nRecording Note: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording within 2 weeks of the event. \nAbout Dr. Christine (Travers) O’Brien \nDr. Christine O’Brien has been involved with Contemplative Outreach since 1992. As a doctor for 37 years\, she has seen the powerful effects of spiritual belief on health. As a mother of seven children\, she knows the challenges of nurturing a family with loving kindness and compassion. She was the Medical Director of Whole Health Program for the Cheyenne Veteran’s Administration\, where she used research on neuroscience to validate and teach veterans about the human ability to transform mind\, body and soul with contemplative practice. \nAbout Eric Peter \nEric Peter is a practitioner and certified Level 11 instructor of Trauma Release Exercises (TRE). Eric studied directly under Dr. David Berceli\, Ph.D. He has been teaching TRE to individuals\, groups and organizations for several years. As a former active duty infantry Marine\, he was initially inspired to serve fellow soldiers\, friends and family members suffering from the effects of combat trauma. Along the path of service\, he realized trauma and everyday stress are a natural part of life\, and recovery is just as natural and includes the entire human family. Eric offers a unique and practical perspective in the recovery of trauma and the management of everyday stress from his rich practice of yoga and contemplative prayer. He also teaches the Creating Space for Change class. \nTimes listed are mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:The Deserts Roots of Contemplative Prayer: Emptiness\, Silence & Hiddenness of Self - in person and via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Belden C. Lane\, Ph.D. has long been fascinated by the relationship between geography and spirituality—asking how the place we live has an effect on our perception of the spiritual life. The desert\, for example\, is a place of scarcity\, silence\, and the deep solitude of the heart. It’s what drew the Desert Fathers and Mothers to the Egyptian desert in the 4th century. This is where the practice of contemplative prayer had its beginnings. We’ll look at three themes in the stories told by the early desert monks: the simplicity of language\, radical forgiveness\, and hiddenness of the self. \nThis event is in person and via Zoom. It will include a time of Centering Prayer. \nPlease see the link below to register. Donations are welcomed!

SUMMARY:Thomas Merton: Finding the Gate to Paradise Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merton was a mystic giant. He wrote 50 books and 2\,000 poems in 27 years. The first printing of his autobiography\, The Seven Story Mountain\, in 1948 was planned for 7\,500 copies. It sold over 600\,000. By 1984\, more than 3\,000\,000 additional copies had sold. \nMerton invites God seekers to go deeper and wider as we discover the difference between our “True Self” and our “False Self.” As we let go of defining our self by power\, prestige\, and possessions and discover that we are more than what we do\, what people say about us\, and what we own\, we are then able to remember that we are made in God’s image–and with us God is well pleased. \nAs we discover the holy in us\, we become equipped to be a vehicle of the Good News by what we do\, by what we say\, and mostly by who we are. Merton wrote\, “At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusions\, a point of truth\, a point or spark which belongs to God.” Therefore\, “to be a saint is to be myself.” \nAs we go deeper in our faith and remember who we are in God’s eyes\, we are able to discover that we can connect with the core of other religions. In his final talk before his death\, Merton said\, “This new language of prayer has to come out of something which transcends all our traditions and comes out of the immediacy of love.” Merton himself had one of his deepest mystical experiences gazing at the rock statue of the Buddha in Polonnaruwa\, Sri Lanka. \nThis half-day retreat will include a presentation\, time for silent meditation\, and a plenary. Our focus will be Merton’s invitation to live a cruciform life: one that is vertically connected to God and horizontally connected to our fellow souls and to “this fragile earth our island home.” \nMeet Bishop Porter Taylor\nBishop Porter Taylor is the retired bishop of Western North Carolina and recently served two years as visiting bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. He earned a Ph.D. in Literature and Theology from Emory University. He is the author of three books: From Anger to Zion: An Alphabet of Faith; To Dream as God Dreams: Sermons of Community\, Conversion\, and Hope; and his most recent\, Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. He and his wife\, Jo\, live in Asheville\, North Carolina\, with their dog\, Sadie. \nPlease register using the link below.
