SUMMARY:Creating Self-Compassion Through Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Blair Ashby over six Thursday sessions \nA foundational gift of practicing Centering Prayer is that we also begin caring for our mental and emotional well-being during our prayer sits. Fortunately\, this is also one definition of self-compassion. Frequently\, we start noticing this gift with a simple thought like\, “my days feel better since I began Centering Prayer.” Centering Prayer creates self-compassion because it requires us to learn and repeat the process of awareness (being present)\, acceptance\, and letting go while consenting to the presence and action of the Divine within us. \nWhat is happening in our brains biologically as we repeat this process of awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go? How does this process impact our mental and emotional well-being? The good news is when we do Centering Prayer\, the work of the Spirit is teaching us self-compassion\, and this class will help us understand some of the transformations enacted in this process. Finally\, by aiding our developing awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go\, the course will also offer us additional skills to increase compassion toward ourselves and others. \nOver the six weeks\, we will explore the physical changes Centering Prayer brings about in our brains. Then\, we will explore the corresponding mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformations resulting from those changes. Most importantly\, in every class\, we will practice those tools for creating self-compassion by discussing what we experience; we will learn from each other. Through this weekly repetition\, participants will habituate new ways of caring for themselves. As we practice\, our lives will feel more meaningful\, grounded\, and empowered to share ourselves in the world through God-given grace. This class will include session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Blair Ashby \nIn 1994\, Contemplative Outreach International asked Blair to transfer the Christian Contemplative Heritage video series to audio cassettes. In the first fifteen minutes of the introductory tape\, Fr. Thomas said so much about God and reality that Blair’s head exploded and unknowingly germinated a desire to experience and eventually teach this God-created reality. In 1997\, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado asked Blair to record Fr. Thomas live\, and Blair has been recording the annual conferences and fall retreats ever since. Through personal relationships with Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. Tony D’Souza (Anthony DeMello’s apprentice)\, and the dozens of spiritual teachers he has recorded\, Blair has gained deep contemplative insights. He has practiced Centering Prayer and self-compassion for the past twenty-eight years. \nThis is a six-week class\, offered on Thursday mornings\, October 9 – November 13\, 2025\nTimes listed are mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:The Welcoming Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary Dwyer \nAs a companion to Centering Prayer\, Welcoming Prayer focuses on the disturbances that beset our daily life and allows us freely to acknowledge and surrender their power to God. We begin to respond rather than automatically react to life on life’s terms. As the originator of Welcoming Prayer\, Mary Mrozowski\, said\, “To welcome and to let go is one of the most radically loving\, faith-filled gestures we can make in each moment of each day. It is an open-hearted embrace of all that is in ourselves and in the world.” During this half-day online retreat\, we will learn about the conceptual background and the method of The Welcoming Prayer\, and we will practice it in community. \nMeet Mary Dwyer \nAn early student of Fr. Thomas Keating\, Mary has been practicing Centering Prayer since the 1980s. In the early 1990s\, she lived at Chrysalis House\, a contemplative community in Warwick\, New York\, blessed by Fr. Keating\, with housemates who included Mary Mrozowski\, David Frenette and Cathy McCarthy. The community became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of Contemplative Outreach’s growth. Mary calls this period her “inpatient” or “residential treatment time” that proved to her that a life of prayer\, consent\, and practice is real\, stable\, and deeply rewarding. \nMary has given years of service to Contemplative Outreach\, Ltd.\, including as a member of the Contemplative Outreach Faculty and Gift Committee\, coordinator for the Living Flame program\, and coordinator of the Miami Chapter. In January she stepped down as chairperson of the COL Governing Board. She continues to serve the Finance/Legal Team and the Welcoming Prayer Service Team. \nMary now divides her time between private practice as a licensed clinical social worker and leadership of retreats and workshops on behalf of Contemplative Outreach throughout the US and internationally. She lives with her husband in Erie\, PA. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Rabbi Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman: Psalms as Sources of Personal Solace\, Interfaith Solidarity\, Service and Joy - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Our Spring Conference is a hybrid presentation conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and online via Zoom. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided for in-person participants. The conference is a community fund-raising event for The Center and helps fund program development\, provide scholarships\, fuel community outreach and maintain our spiritual home. We hope you can join us. \nDescription of Talk: \nThis year’s spring conference\, “Psalms as Sources of Personal Solace\, Interfaith Solidarity\, Service and Joy\,” features teachers and musicians\, Rabbi Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman\, sharing compelling insights about the psalms\, practical guidance for contemplative practice\, and meaningful small group interactions to foster our sense of community and belonging. We’ll enjoy gorgeous\, heartful\, prayerful soulful music and\, of course\, space for sacred silence. Rabbi Jamie and Laura are no strangers to The Center for Contemplative Living\, having led sessions (and a seder) in recent years that have been very well received. \nPresentation topics include: \nReclaiming Psalm Recitation as Spiritual Practice — An overview of the types of psalms and their uses: poetry\, peace (Saul)\, prophesy and mystical union.\nChristian Perspectives — Solitude & Silence\, Solidarity & Service.\nPsalm 23: Recitation as Meditation — A deep dive into “The Lord is my shepherd….”\nTwo sessions of Centering Prayer will be included in the conference. \nNote: We recognize the tremendous uncertainty and division in our country right now and want to suggest that The Psalms have been a gateway for healing and reconciliation throughout the ages and can be for us now. This presentation will take place in proximity to countrywide protests as well as oppression and violence in numerous places in the world. We invite you to be with us this day to hold it all—together—as we allow the psalms and music to take us deeper into the pain and grief of this time and transform it into love for the benefit of all. \n“We are called to this journey not just for our own personal growth\, but also for the sake of the whole human community.”\n– Fr. Thomas Keating \nAbout Jamie Arnold and Laura Berman \nJamie Arnold has served as the rabbi for Congregation Beth Evergreen since 2005 and is a core faculty member of The Kabbalah Experience in Denver. For the last five years\, he has partnered with the gifted musician and prayer leader\, Laura Berman to create unforgettable\, transformative experiences for interfaith groups. Laura currently serves as the Music Director for the flagship Mile Hi Church in Lakewood. \nRecording Note: All registrants will receive access to the Zoom recording link. This recording will be available within two weeks of the event. \nTimes Listed are Mountain Time\, Denver\, Colorado \nRegister using the website link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Welcoming Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Martha\, Martha\, you are worried and anxious about many things … but one thing is needful.”\n-Luke 10:42 \nThe Mary and Martha story is an example of the focus we can bring to everyday life activities. As the Welcoming Prayer 40-day practice booklet reminds us: “To assist this process\, we need complementary practices. Centering Prayer teaches us consenting in stillness; the Welcoming Prayer practice teaches us consenting in activity.” \n“The Welcoming Prayer practice is a way of letting go into the present moment in the ordinary routines of daily life. It is used when your needs for security\, affection and control are frustrated or gratified and cause emotional reactions. It is a way of turning everything over to God …” Thomas Keating\, Open Mind\, Open Heart \nThe presenters are part of the community of the Center for Contemplative Living in Denver CO. Over the years they have been blessed through the presence and teachings of Thomas Keating OCSO\, and Mary Mrozowski as well as many other spiritual leaders. \nWe hope to see you at our workshop. May you be open to including the Welcoming Prayer in your invitation to the Holy Spirit to extend the walls of your inner room to all of life. \nTime listed is Mountain Daylight Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the website link below to register.

SUMMARY:Practice Soul Friending\, Be a Soul Friend (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Practice Soul Friending\, Be a Soul Friend\nwith Cherry Haisten\nWednesday May 13\, 2026 via Zoom\n2-3pm Eastern Time (7pm UTC+1\, 1pm Central\, noon Mountain\, 11am Pacific)\nFree; suggested donation $25\nThis event will be recorded \nWhen it’s hard to know where we are on the spiritual journey\, hard to hear the still small voice\, hard to consent to God’s presence and action\, a companion—a soul friend—can help. In the Contemplative Outreach community and in small groups of Centering Prayer practitioners\, soul friending has always played a role. \nThomas Keating hoped that all Centering Prayer groups would evolve into soul friending groups in which participants could experience friendship as “a step toward the love and knowledge of God.” Aelred of Rievaulx called this kind of companioning “spiritual friendship.” In a developing relationship\, friendship may lead to intimacy\, to the deep knowledge of the Divine at the center of all creation. The practice of Centering Prayer opens us to a deeper awareness of the Divine through our repeated consent; in a group we can practice consenting to the presence and action of God in each other. The fruit of this practice may be an increased ability to see through the surface to the Christ within our companions and ultimately within each human being. \n“[T]he awareness of the deepest level in us is also an awareness of the deepest level in everyone else\,” wrote Thomas Keating in Open Mind\, Open Heart. “The insight into Christ dwelling in every other person enables one to express charity toward others . . . . Instead of seeing only someone’s personality\, race\, nationality\, gender\, status\, or characteristics (which you like or do not like)\, you see what is deepest—one’s union . . . with Christ” (103). \nDuring  this hour\,  we will explore a method for practicing soul friending\, the important roles of both speaker and listener in a group\, and the fruits that ripple out from our practice. There will also be a time for questions and comments. There is much to explore about soul friending beyond this brief time\, but may you leave inspired to practice soul friending on your own and to share the practice with companions. \n“Every particular thou is a glimpse through to the eternal Thou.”            \n– Martin Buber \nPlease register below. \nAbout Cherry Haisten \nCherry is a longtime presenter of workshops on Centering Prayer and Welcoming Prayer\, which she has regularly practiced for over three decades. She has led workshops and retreats in many places around the U.S. and in British Columbia. With her colleagues on the Welcoming Prayer Service Team\, she worked to compose materials for the Spirituality and Practice online Welcoming Prayer courses and contributes to the Welcoming Prayer team’s writing projects. \nAn English major and former writing instructor\, Cherry went back to school in middle age for a Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry. At this Jesuit school\, her program included an emphasis on Ignatian direction and discernment. Combining this training with her study of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel and Benedictine spirituality has been a joy. Through Living Flame and other programs\, Cherry is delighted to pass on to other seekers something of what she has been blessed to receive. \nimage credit: mbolina/Getty Images \n\n\n \n \n 5/13/2026 Practice Soul Friending\, Be a Soul Friend\n a Zoom presentation with Cherry Haisten \n \n X/TwitterThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Address \n \n \n AfghanistanAlbaniaAlgeriaAmerican SamoaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBoliviaBonaire\, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCabo VerdeCambodiaCameroonCanadaCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo\, Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzechiaCôte d'IvoireDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEswatiniEthiopiaFalkland IslandsFaroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuamGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and McDonald IslandsHoly SeeHondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIranIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea\, Democratic People's Republic ofKorea\, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People's Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMarshall IslandsMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMicronesiaMoldovaMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorth MacedoniaNorthern Mariana IslandsNorwayOmanPakistanPalauPalestine\, State ofPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalPuerto RicoQatarRomaniaRussian FederationRwandaRéunionSaint BarthélemySaint Helena\, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint MartinSaint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint MaartenSlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwedenSwitzerlandSyria Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania\, the United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluTürkiyeUS Minor Outlying IslandsUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuelaViet NamVirgin Islands\, BritishVirgin Islands\, U.S.Wallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabweÅland Islands\n Country\n \n \n Email*
