SUMMARY:The Deserts Roots of Contemplative Prayer: Emptiness\, Silence & Hiddenness of Self - in person and via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Belden C. Lane\, Ph.D. has long been fascinated by the relationship between geography and spirituality—asking how the place we live has an effect on our perception of the spiritual life. The desert\, for example\, is a place of scarcity\, silence\, and the deep solitude of the heart. It’s what drew the Desert Fathers and Mothers to the Egyptian desert in the 4th century. This is where the practice of contemplative prayer had its beginnings. We’ll look at three themes in the stories told by the early desert monks: the simplicity of language\, radical forgiveness\, and hiddenness of the self. \nThis event is in person and via Zoom. It will include a time of Centering Prayer. \nPlease see the link below to register. Donations are welcomed!

SUMMARY:Thomas Merton: Finding the Gate to Paradise Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merton was a mystic giant. He wrote 50 books and 2\,000 poems in 27 years. The first printing of his autobiography\, The Seven Story Mountain\, in 1948 was planned for 7\,500 copies. It sold over 600\,000. By 1984\, more than 3\,000\,000 additional copies had sold. \nMerton invites God seekers to go deeper and wider as we discover the difference between our “True Self” and our “False Self.” As we let go of defining our self by power\, prestige\, and possessions and discover that we are more than what we do\, what people say about us\, and what we own\, we are then able to remember that we are made in God’s image–and with us God is well pleased. \nAs we discover the holy in us\, we become equipped to be a vehicle of the Good News by what we do\, by what we say\, and mostly by who we are. Merton wrote\, “At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusions\, a point of truth\, a point or spark which belongs to God.” Therefore\, “to be a saint is to be myself.” \nAs we go deeper in our faith and remember who we are in God’s eyes\, we are able to discover that we can connect with the core of other religions. In his final talk before his death\, Merton said\, “This new language of prayer has to come out of something which transcends all our traditions and comes out of the immediacy of love.” Merton himself had one of his deepest mystical experiences gazing at the rock statue of the Buddha in Polonnaruwa\, Sri Lanka. \nThis half-day retreat will include a presentation\, time for silent meditation\, and a plenary. Our focus will be Merton’s invitation to live a cruciform life: one that is vertically connected to God and horizontally connected to our fellow souls and to “this fragile earth our island home.” \nMeet Bishop Porter Taylor\nBishop Porter Taylor is the retired bishop of Western North Carolina and recently served two years as visiting bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. He earned a Ph.D. in Literature and Theology from Emory University. He is the author of three books: From Anger to Zion: An Alphabet of Faith; To Dream as God Dreams: Sermons of Community\, Conversion\, and Hope; and his most recent\, Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being a Bishop. He and his wife\, Jo\, live in Asheville\, North Carolina\, with their dog\, Sadie. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:The Very Rev. Michael Battle\, Ph.D. - Contemplative Prayer and African Christian Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:The essence of African Christian mysticism (founded in the desert tradition of monasticism) is not taught but caught. Such mysticism is a whole way of life. It is not an esoteric doctrine or a predetermined plan of ascetic practice. It is important to understand this\, because there really is no way of talking about the way of prayer\, or the spiritual teaching of God’s life. African Christian mystics did not try to systematize the way to God; instead\, they relied upon the experience of a lifetime of striving to re-direct every aspect of body\, mind\, and soul to God. There was no Protestant or Catholic dichotomy of salvation based upon grace or work because salvation was caught up in how the community is so much more than the sum of individuals striving for heaven. And yet\, personal prayer and personal salvation could be better understood through interpersonal prayer and interpersonal salvation. This is summed up today through the contemporary lens of African Christian mysticism known as Ubuntu: I in You and You in Me. In short\, African contemplative prayer is not only an activity undertaken each day\, but also a life continually turned towards God. \nThis event will include session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Michael Battle: \nThe Very Rev. Michael Battle\, Ph.D. has an undergraduate degree from Duke University\, received his master’s of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary\, a master’s of Sacred Theology from Yale University and a PhD in theology and ethics\, also from Duke University. He was ordained a priest by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1993. Battle’s clergy experience\, in addition to his current church work\, includes serving as vicar at St. Titus Episcopal Church in Durham\, NC\, rector at Church of Our Saviour\, in San Gabriel\, California; rector at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church\, Raleigh\, N.C.; and interim rector or associate priest with other churches in North Carolina and in Cape Town\, South Africa. \nIn his Peace Battle Institute he works on subjects of diversity\, spirituality\, prayer\, race and reconciliation. Almost since its inception\, he has served as pastor and spiritual director to hundreds of clergy and laity for CREDO for the Episcopal Church. He has also served as chaplain to Archbishop Tutu\, Congressman John Lewis\, the House of Bishops and\, in 2008\, was chaplain to the Lambeth Conference of Anglican Bishops. He is a featured keynote speaker and has led numerous clergy and lay retreats\, including the bishops’ retreat of the Province of the West Indies. In addition\, Battle has served as vice president to the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi\, Arun Gandhi’s Institute for Nonviolence. Battle and his wife\, Raquel\, were married by Archbishop Tutu and are parents to two daughters\, Sage and Bliss\, and a son\, Zion. All of whom were baptized by Archbishop Tutu as well. \nRecording Note: All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording link for a period of 30 days. This recording will be available within 2 weeks of the event. A professionally edited audio or video recording will be available for permanent purchase from Broadlands Media beginning May 1\, 2024. More information will be provided when available. \nThis is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and online via Zoom videoconference. \nTime listed is Mountain Time. (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the website link below to register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:Rev. Dr. Barbara Holmes – Crisis Contemplation: Healing the Wounds of the Village - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In Crisis Contemplation\, the Rev. Dr. Barbara Holmes will address two entry points into contemplation which have seldom been addressed: contemplation during crisis\, and how we contemplate as community. \nEngaging deeply with both history and current events\, Holmes will address the emergence of crisis contemplation\, especially through the lenses of BIPOC peoples. Dr Barbara will be exploring existing communal contemplative experiences. As she looks into types of crises (pandemics\, earthquakes\, and systemic abuses)\, she examines the resulting traumatic wounds which manifest across generations. \nIn the second half of the presentation\, she will shift toward a village response to crises\, addressing communal formation\, belonging\, resistance\, and resilience. A deeper look at healing through memory and story\, culture and ritual\, will lead to a final chapter on envisioning different futures through liminality and bio-spiritual resurrection. \nThis event will include 20 minutes of Centering Prayer \nRecording note: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording within 2 weeks of the event. \nAbout Rev. Dr. Barbara A. Holmes \nDr. Holmes is a spiritual teacher and writer focused on African American spirituality\, mysticism\, cosmology and culture. She is President Emerita of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (2012-2016). She also served as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Memphis Theological Seminary (2005-2010). She holds the title of Professor Emerita of Ethics and African American Religious Studies at that seminary. Currently\, she is a core faculty member at the Center for Action and Contemplation founded by Fr. Richard Rohr. \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the website link below to register \nScholarships are available.

SUMMARY:Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer: The End of All that is not Christ - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer\nThe End of All that is not Christ\nDecember 9 8:30-2:30pm Eastern Standard Time \nContemplative Outreach of Columbus is offering a Silent Saturday. A Silent Saturday provides a few hours that are set aside for Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, spiritual teaching and reflection. \n“Come rest awhile with the Lord” in preparation for Advent. Advent begins a new year in the liturgical cycle and we are invited once again to renew our journey by pondering Thomas Merton’s statement: “The Advent Mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not Christ.” Sr. Carol Ann invites us to consider the wonders of the Incarnation. In Jesus\, we are told that God and humanity are meant for each other. We are called to become more fully human as Jesus was fully human. \nSr. Carol Ann Spencer O.P. is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She has led countless workshops and retreats. She is also the founding director of WELLSTREAMS\, a program for becoming a spiritual director\, and the Spirituality Network. The day will begin at 8:30am and last until 2:30pm. EST. \nRegister by sending an email to Bob Gorman (below) and a zoom link and handouts will be sent to you a few days in advance. \nThe event is free. Nondeductible donations to Contemplative Outreach of Columbus to cover costs are welcome. They can be sent to the care of Tom Davis at 844 Franklin Ave Columbus OH 43205.

SUMMARY:A Contemplative Adventure: Spirituality Encounters Evolution (From Evolution to Quantum Theory) - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and Online via Zoom videoconference. \nIt seems that our contemporary world is obsessed with certainty and results. Who won the game? Who won the election? When will I get there? When will the project be completed? Am I cured? What is the correct answer? Is there a heaven and will I get there?\n‘\nWhat might be an unintended consequence of our obsession with certainty and endings? Might it be that we are not fully present to what is happening in the now. As Anthony de Mello insightfully says\, “We go through life asleep!” Might this sleepwalking towards certainty and results creep into our practices of contemplation and meditation? \nContemplation and meditation are intended to foster mindfulness – a fuller awareness of all that arises in the present moment. However\, it seems our transactional cultural and religious worldviews often lead us in the opposite direction – away from mindfulness towards mindless sleepwalking. \nThis workshop will include a session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Rick Klein \nOur presenter\, Rick Klein\, believes that science offers insights to help us awaken from mindless sleepwalking. Building on Teilhard de Chardin’s teachings on evolution and Thomas Keating’s teachings on contemplation\, together we’ll explore a rarely traveled terrain\, the synthesis of science and spirituality. \nRick gives talks and workshops on contemplative spirituality. He is a teacher of Centering Prayer and has presented workshops on science and spirituality\, compassion\, and mysticism at the Center for Contemplative Living and other locations throughout Colorado. \nMeeting times listed are Mountain Time. \nClick the link below to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Brian McLaren: Faith\, Doubt and Contemplation: Being Contemplatives in a Dangerous Time - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and online via Zoom videoconference. \nDescription of Talk: Institutional religion\, much like many of our other institutions\, is under stress\, and that will seem like an understatement to many. Contemplative spirituality has provided a way for many of us to continue in faith even though our relationship to organized religion is troubled. How can those of us rooted in the contemplative tradition contribute constructively in this tense moment? How can we\, from a position of personal centeredness\, be salt and light in these times? How can we draw deep roots from our own Christian tradition while welcoming insights and seeking collaboration among traditions? \nThis conference presentation will include at least one 20-minutes Centering Prayer session. \nAbout Brian McLaren \nBrian D. McLaren is an author\, speaker\, activist\, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor\, he is a passionate advocate for “a new kind of Christianity” – just\, generous\, and working with people of all faiths for the common good. He is a core faculty member of The Living School and podcaster with Learning How to See\, which are part of the Center for Action and Contemplation. He is also an Auburn Senior Fellow and is a co-host of Southern Lights. His newest books are Faith After Doubt (January 2021)\, and Do I Stay Christian? (May 2022). \nTimes listed are Mountain Time. \nClick the link below to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Deepening Spiritual Practice through Three-Centered Awareness - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Phileena Nikole \nThree-centered awareness is crucial for experiencing Divine Presence; mind\, heart\, and body coming on-line and cooperating together. But too often\, we experience shutdown in one or more of these centers. This limits our capacity for opening to Presence and receiving the integration and wholeness we long for. \nAre you curious about the deeper\, subtle\, life-changing dynamics of contemplative prayer? Do you feel stuck in your practice and desire to progress? Are you wondering how to more regularly bring the gifts of your sitting practice into your daily experiences of life and relationships? \nIf so\, join Phileena for this online contemplative experience. During our time together\, Phileena will offer a mix of foundational teaching\, guided group contemplation\, and three-centered awareness practice. This event will include a session of Centering Prayer \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Two Session Event: February 27th and 28th\, 2023 from 6 PM to 8 PM (Central) each day. \nThe Introduction to Centering Prayer explores the place of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. As Jesus said\, “But when you pray\, go to your private room and\, when you have shut your door\, pray to your Father who is in that secret place\, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6) \nThe Introduction will guide you through the method of Centering Prayer and let you experience this prayer of silence. Centering Prayer’s purpose is to foster a deeper intimacy with Christ through silence and stillness. The presentation will include the conceptual background of Centering Prayer\, psychological processes\, and insights into establishing Centering Prayer as a way of life. There will be opportunities for discussion as well as invitations into prayerful presence. \nThis workshop is divided into four conferences across two days. SUMMARY:What Does Centering Prayer Have to Offer the 21st Century? (via Zoom and in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Adam Bucko and Rory McEntee \nWhat do Father Keating’s teachings have to offer us in the 21st century? In an initial talk\, Adam Bucko will set the stage for our time together by first looking to the past. How can we understand Centering Prayer’s connections to the historical structures and frameworks of the Christian tradition\, and what do these structures of contemplative spirituality have to offer us today? Looking forward\, what might we need to add or subtract from these structures to develop a robust contemplative life in the 21st century? How do the challenges we face today differ\, as well as overlap\, from those in the past? And how can Centering Prayer address the challenges of a broken world in which our contemporary journeys are embedded? \nRory McEntee will follow up Adam’s talk with reflections on interspiritual dimensions of Father Keating’s teachings and contemplative life. How might the two major projects of Fr. Keating’s later life\, the Centering Prayer movement and the interspiritual “Snowmass Conferences\,” come together? What might be gleamed for the Centering Prayer movement from this other half of Fr. Keating’s (inter)spiritual work in the world? Is an openness to other ways of being spiritual and/or religious necessary for contemplative lives in the 21st century? If so\, what is a proper way of orienting ourselves within such openness? Answering such questions leads us beyond tolerance for other religious traditions towards an abiding love for them\, as Fr. Keating often spoke of. For some\, it may even lead to a deep engagement in our contemplative lives with those outside the boundaries of traditional Christianity\, even while remaining anchored to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. \nIn a final session\, Adam and Rory will lead a dialogue around “new monasticism\,” engaging one another as well as the audience. They will look back at their co-authored book from 2015\, The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living\, and discuss what still feels relevant\, and what has changed since then. As new monasticism aims to translate practices from monastic and other contemplative traditions into modern lives\, as well as broaden ideas of what ‘total commitment’ to a contemplative life looks like\, it resonates strongly with the Centering Prayer movement. Our hope is this discussion will lead to a robust Q&A dialogue with conference participants around the most pressing questions in our contemplative journeys today. This event will include two sessions of Centering Prayer \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lectio Divina\, a Latin term for “divine reading\,” is an ancient monastic practice of praying the Scriptures. The monks would gather in prayer and hear the scripture proclaimed. They would take a word or phrase that spoke to them into the activity of their day. Pondering this thought\, ruminating through it throughout their work\, they were aware of God’s presence. \nMany of you are quite familiar with Centering Prayer\, and have experienced how it has deepened your relationship with God. In this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Lectio Divina\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow participants. \nDuring Lectio Divina\, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart\,” as if one is in conversation with God. Lectio Divina includes moments of reading (lectio)\, reflecting on (meditatio)\, responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one’s relationship with the Divine. \nLectio Divina will bring you into a more intimate sense of the presence of God in the word of Scripture\, and you will experience that grace this word has to influence\, and indeed transform your life. \nPlease register using the link below.
