SUMMARY:Rev. Dr. Barbara Holmes – Crisis Contemplation: Healing the Wounds of the Village - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In Crisis Contemplation\, the Rev. Dr. Barbara Holmes will address two entry points into contemplation which have seldom been addressed: contemplation during crisis\, and how we contemplate as community. \nEngaging deeply with both history and current events\, Holmes will address the emergence of crisis contemplation\, especially through the lenses of BIPOC peoples. Dr Barbara will be exploring existing communal contemplative experiences. As she looks into types of crises (pandemics\, earthquakes\, and systemic abuses)\, she examines the resulting traumatic wounds which manifest across generations. \nIn the second half of the presentation\, she will shift toward a village response to crises\, addressing communal formation\, belonging\, resistance\, and resilience. A deeper look at healing through memory and story\, culture and ritual\, will lead to a final chapter on envisioning different futures through liminality and bio-spiritual resurrection. \nThis event will include 20 minutes of Centering Prayer \nRecording note: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording within 2 weeks of the event. \nAbout Rev. Dr. Barbara A. Holmes \nDr. Holmes is a spiritual teacher and writer focused on African American spirituality\, mysticism\, cosmology and culture. She is President Emerita of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (2012-2016). She also served as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Memphis Theological Seminary (2005-2010). She holds the title of Professor Emerita of Ethics and African American Religious Studies at that seminary. Currently\, she is a core faculty member at the Center for Action and Contemplation founded by Fr. Richard Rohr. \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the website link below to register \nScholarships are available.

SUMMARY:Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer: The End of All that is not Christ - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Silent Saturday with Sr. Carol Ann Spencer\nThe End of All that is not Christ\nDecember 9 8:30-2:30pm Eastern Standard Time \nContemplative Outreach of Columbus is offering a Silent Saturday. A Silent Saturday provides a few hours that are set aside for Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, spiritual teaching and reflection. \n“Come rest awhile with the Lord” in preparation for Advent. Advent begins a new year in the liturgical cycle and we are invited once again to renew our journey by pondering Thomas Merton’s statement: “The Advent Mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not Christ.” Sr. Carol Ann invites us to consider the wonders of the Incarnation. In Jesus\, we are told that God and humanity are meant for each other. We are called to become more fully human as Jesus was fully human. \nSr. Carol Ann Spencer O.P. is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She has led countless workshops and retreats. She is also the founding director of WELLSTREAMS\, a program for becoming a spiritual director\, and the Spirituality Network. The day will begin at 8:30am and last until 2:30pm. EST. \nRegister by sending an email to Bob Gorman (below) and a zoom link and handouts will be sent to you a few days in advance. \nThe event is free. Nondeductible donations to Contemplative Outreach of Columbus to cover costs are welcome. They can be sent to the care of Tom Davis at 844 Franklin Ave Columbus OH 43205.

SUMMARY:A Contemplative Adventure: Spirituality Encounters Evolution (From Evolution to Quantum Theory) - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and Online via Zoom videoconference. \nIt seems that our contemporary world is obsessed with certainty and results. Who won the game? Who won the election? When will I get there? When will the project be completed? Am I cured? What is the correct answer? Is there a heaven and will I get there?\n‘\nWhat might be an unintended consequence of our obsession with certainty and endings? Might it be that we are not fully present to what is happening in the now. As Anthony de Mello insightfully says\, “We go through life asleep!” Might this sleepwalking towards certainty and results creep into our practices of contemplation and meditation? \nContemplation and meditation are intended to foster mindfulness – a fuller awareness of all that arises in the present moment. However\, it seems our transactional cultural and religious worldviews often lead us in the opposite direction – away from mindfulness towards mindless sleepwalking. \nThis workshop will include a session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Rick Klein \nOur presenter\, Rick Klein\, believes that science offers insights to help us awaken from mindless sleepwalking. Building on Teilhard de Chardin’s teachings on evolution and Thomas Keating’s teachings on contemplation\, together we’ll explore a rarely traveled terrain\, the synthesis of science and spirituality. \nRick gives talks and workshops on contemplative spirituality. He is a teacher of Centering Prayer and has presented workshops on science and spirituality\, compassion\, and mysticism at the Center for Contemplative Living and other locations throughout Colorado. \nMeeting times listed are Mountain Time. \nClick the link below to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Brian McLaren: Faith\, Doubt and Contemplation: Being Contemplatives in a Dangerous Time - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and online via Zoom videoconference. \nDescription of Talk: Institutional religion\, much like many of our other institutions\, is under stress\, and that will seem like an understatement to many. Contemplative spirituality has provided a way for many of us to continue in faith even though our relationship to organized religion is troubled. How can those of us rooted in the contemplative tradition contribute constructively in this tense moment? How can we\, from a position of personal centeredness\, be salt and light in these times? SUMMARY:Deepening Spiritual Practice through Three-Centered Awareness - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Phileena Nikole \nThree-centered awareness is crucial for experiencing Divine Presence; mind\, heart\, and body coming on-line and cooperating together. But too often\, we experience shutdown in one or more of these centers. This limits our capacity for opening to Presence and receiving the integration and wholeness we long for. \nAre you curious about the deeper\, subtle\, life-changing dynamics of contemplative prayer? Do you feel stuck in your practice and desire to progress? Are you wondering how to more regularly bring the gifts of your sitting practice into your daily experiences of life and relationships? \nIf so\, join Phileena for this online contemplative experience. During our time together\, Phileena will offer a mix of foundational teaching\, guided group contemplation\, and three-centered awareness practice. This event will include a session of Centering Prayer \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Two Session Event: February 27th and 28th\, 2023 from 6 PM to 8 PM (Central) each day. \nThe Introduction to Centering Prayer explores the place of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. Centering Prayer’s purpose is to foster a deeper intimacy with Christ through silence and stillness. The presentation will include the conceptual background of Centering Prayer\, psychological processes\, and insights into establishing Centering Prayer as a way of life. There will be opportunities for discussion as well as invitations into prayerful presence. \nThis workshop is divided into four conferences across two days. SUMMARY:What Does Centering Prayer Have to Offer the 21st Century? (via Zoom and in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Adam Bucko and Rory McEntee \nWhat do Father Keating’s teachings have to offer us in the 21st century? In an initial talk\, Adam Bucko will set the stage for our time together by first looking to the past. How can we understand Centering Prayer’s connections to the historical structures and frameworks of the Christian tradition\, and what do these structures of contemplative spirituality have to offer us today? Looking forward\, what might we need to add or subtract from these structures to develop a robust contemplative life in the 21st century? How do the challenges we face today differ\, as well as overlap\, from those in the past? And how can Centering Prayer address the challenges of a broken world in which our contemporary journeys are embedded? \nRory McEntee will follow up Adam’s talk with reflections on interspiritual dimensions of Father Keating’s teachings and contemplative life. How might the two major projects of Fr. Keating’s later life\, the Centering Prayer movement and the interspiritual “Snowmass Conferences\,” come together? What might be gleamed for the Centering Prayer movement from this other half of Fr. Keating’s (inter)spiritual work in the world? Is an openness to other ways of being spiritual and/or religious necessary for contemplative lives in the 21st century? If so\, what is a proper way of orienting ourselves within such openness? Answering such questions leads us beyond tolerance for other religious traditions towards an abiding love for them\, as Fr. Keating often spoke of. For some\, it may even lead to a deep engagement in our contemplative lives with those outside the boundaries of traditional Christianity\, even while remaining anchored to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. \nIn a final session\, Adam and Rory will lead a dialogue around “new monasticism\,” engaging one another as well as the audience. They will look back at their co-authored book from 2015\, The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living\, and discuss what still feels relevant\, and what has changed since then. As new monasticism aims to translate practices from monastic and other contemplative traditions into modern lives\, as well as broaden ideas of what ‘total commitment’ to a contemplative life looks like\, it resonates strongly with the Centering Prayer movement. Our hope is this discussion will lead to a robust Q&A dialogue with conference participants around the most pressing questions in our contemplative journeys today. This event will include two sessions of Centering Prayer \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lectio Divina\, a Latin term for “divine reading\,” is an ancient monastic practice of praying the Scriptures. The monks would gather in prayer and hear the scripture proclaimed. They would take a word or phrase that spoke to them into the activity of their day. Pondering this thought\, ruminating through it throughout their work\, they were aware of God’s presence. \nMany of you are quite familiar with Centering Prayer\, and have experienced how it has deepened your relationship with God. In this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Lectio Divina\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow participants. \nDuring Lectio Divina\, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart\,” as if one is in conversation with God. Lectio Divina includes moments of reading (lectio)\, reflecting on (meditatio)\, responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one’s relationship with the Divine. \nLectio Divina will bring you into a more intimate sense of the presence of God in the word of Scripture\, and you will experience that grace this word has to influence\, and indeed transform your life. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Thomases: Entering the Woods of Awareness with Thomas Keating and Thomas Berry - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:With each passing day it seems our world is becoming more divided and polarized. Media commentators continually assure us that humanity is becoming more separated by the minute. Against this background of division\, our common experiences of a global pandemic\, the meteoric rise of information and misinformation\, and the constant drumbeat of climate change evidence the increasing connectedness of our 21st century world. It seems we are torn apart and brought together at the same time. \nAnd what about the spiritual paths we choose? Is the spiritual realm immune from these opposing forces of separation and connection? Challenging times call for wise guides. Fortunately\, two guides named Thomas offer insights for these confusing and mysterious times. Rick Klein weaves together Thomas Keating’s inner spiritual wisdom with Thomas Berry’s outer spiritual and scientific wisdom\, creating an emerging story of hope for the future. \nIn this course\, Rick Klein will speak about the parallels and divergences between the paths of Thomas Berry and Thomas Keating. Rick is convinced “the only way to fully follow either the road of Thomas Berry or the road of Thomas Keating\, is to travel both roads. Not one followed by the other\, but both roads at the same time. Although the roads appear separate\, they are in essence forever linked. Berry’s Universe Story and Keating’s Spiritual Journey connect whenever … action meets contemplation\, matter meets spirit\, being meets doing\, meaning meets purpose … in intentional awareness” \nThis class will include a session of Centering Prayer \nAbout Rick Klein \nRick gives talks and workshops on contemplative spirituality throughout Colorado. He is a teacher of Centering Prayer and has presented workshops on science and spirituality\, compassion\, and mysticism at the Center for Contemplative Living. He is a past facilitator and teacher in the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program offered by Benet Hill Monastery. \nTimes listed are Mountain Time \nRegister at the link below

SUMMARY:Praying with Sacred Images - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed are the pure in heart\, for they shall see God.”\n– Matthew 5:8 \nContemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington invites you to join us Saturday\, Oct. 16 for half-day retreat (via Zoom) focusing on “Praying with Sacred Images” led by Rev. Carole Crumley. \nJesus tells his followers that there is a graced way of seeing that draws us toward God. Praying with holy icons\, an ancient-yet-ever-new spiritual practice\, is a vital way of training the contemplative eye for this graced way of seeing. It is a precious means of teaching\, prayer and opening to divine presence. Praying with sacred images is a way of schooling the spiritual eye\, inviting us deeper into the wholeness/oneness of God and sensitizing us to letting everything we see become a potential icon of God.\nOur time will include some sharing of our own experiences of praying with sacred images as well as time to be together in prayer with a holy icon. \nRev. Carole  Crumley is the retired senior program director of Shalem Institute and former canon educator and founder of the Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage at Washington National Cathedral. A sought-after retreat and conference leader\, Carole continues to teach and lead pilgrimages to sacred sites in Europe\, the Middle East\, and the U.S. Carole is a lover of storytelling\, moveable feasts\, and country music. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Sister Kathleen Deignan\, CND ”Thomas Merton: Guide Through the Dark Night of Earth” – via zoom
DESCRIPTION:Among the great luminaries of the Christian spiritual tradition\, the modern master\, Thomas Merton\, shines a penetrating light upon our challenging lives and times. More than half a century after his death\, Merton grows in stature and relevance as a pattern of integral ecological consciousness becomes evident throughout his written corpus as its complexity and unity become more transparent with time. As the contemporary ecological crisis deepens\, we urgently require more than instrumental remedies to stem the life-loss of our ecosphere suffered at human hands. We need a penetrating understanding of the more troubling and mysterious pathology underlying it: why\, indeed\, have we plundered our planetary paradise? \nThis was the difficult “koan” Merton carried to fruition as he explored the congenital disorientation of spirit that exiles us from our common home in the community of creation. Having suffered such exile\, he recovered from it\, and taught a holistic therapy of contemplative living that can restore our ecological consciousness\, conscience\, and practice. This program will explore Merton’s wisdom for the Dark Night of Earth. \nThis event will include 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nTime listed is Mountain Time. \nClick the Link Below for Registration Information

The Welcoming Prayer is a method of consenting to God’s presence and action in our physical and emotional reactions to events and situations in daily life. The purpose of the Welcoming Prayer is to deepen our relationship with God through consenting in the ordinary activities of our day — “consent-on-the-go.” \nA reliable internet connection with the capability for audio and video is required. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion. Prerequisite: Introduction to Centering Prayer or an established Centering Prayer practice. \nRetreat Director: Sister Mary McGehee\, OSB

SUMMARY:David Frenette Workshop - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Contemplative Outreach\, Ltd. \nSilence Speaking\, Stillness Acting: Centering Prayer\, Contemplative Petition and Unity\nSunday February 20\, 2022 via Zoom\n11am – 1pm Pacific Time (noon Mountain; 1pm Central; 2pm Eastern; London (BST) 7pm; UTC 19:00)\nFree; suggested donation $35 USD \nHelp!  Our world\, our loved ones and we ourselves are in need of help.  Always\, and it seems especially\, now. How can we use our Centering Prayer practice to connect with the needs around us and to pray for help in a way that is aligned with our contemplative journey? \nThis workshop will explore the practice of contemplative petition: prayers of intercession flowing from the dynamic silence and stillness of Centering Prayer. Contemplative petition can help embody our Centering Prayer practice with intention\, connecting it with our human needs and the needs of the world. This is not just “praying for what we want” in a materialistic or magical-thinking way. This practice is about surrendering into God in trust\, as ultimately\, contemplative petition is God in us\, praying for God in others. \nWe will learn how Centering Prayer’s greatest relevance for our contemporary world is in the way it can flow into contemplative petition and contemplative service\, into what happens off the prayer seat\, in the integration of silence and speech\, stillness and action. \nJoin us as we experientially learn three basic guidelines for a practice of contemplative petition.  We will have two short periods of Centering Prayer\, the first flowing into a group petition for a common need\, the second expressing itself in personalized petitions for a need of your own.  We will have small breakout groups for sharing and you will also receive a worksheet that will guide you in continuing your personal contemplative petition practice on your own. \nYou may also be interested in the 2021 November session\, The Dynamic Center of Being. \nThis event will be recorded for those that cannot attend the live version. \nAbout David Frenette: \nDavid Frenette\, author of The Path of Centering Prayer: Deepening Your Experience of God (Sounds True 2012)\, is a contemplative spiritual director\, mentor for other spiritual directors\, and spiritual writer. He co-created and co-led a contemplative retreat community where he lived as a monk for 10 years. He has an MA in transpersonal counseling psychology\, has been a trustee of Contemplative Outreach (the international Centering Prayer organization)\, an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University\, a founding member of Integral Spirituality\, and a teacher at leading retreat centers across the country. From 1983 until his death in 2018\, David’s spiritual father was the Trappist monk and founder of Centering Prayer\, Father Thomas Keating. SUMMARY:Introduction to The Welcoming Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“Martha\, Martha\, you are worried and anxious about many things … but one thing is needful.”\n-Luke 10:42 \nThe Mary and Martha story is an example of the focus we can bring to everyday life activities. As the Welcoming Prayer 40-day practice booklet reminds us: “To assist this process\, we need complementary practices. Centering Prayer teaches us consenting in stillness; the Welcoming Prayer practice teaches us consenting in activity.” \n“The Welcoming Prayer practice is a way of letting go into the present moment in the ordinary routines of daily life. It is used when your needs for security\, affection and control are frustrated or gratified and cause emotional reactions. It is a way of turning everything over to God …” Thomas Keating\, Open Mind\, Open Heart \nThe presenters are part of the community of the Center for Contemplative Living in Denver CO. Over the years they have been blessed through the presence and teachings of Thomas Keating OCSO\, and Mary Mrozowski as well as many other spiritual leaders. \nWe hope to see you at our workshop. May you be open to including the Welcoming Prayer in your invitation to the Holy Spirit to extend the walls of your inner room to all of life. \nTime listed is Mountain Time (Denver\, Colorado)\nClick the link below to register.
