DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer Online Introductory Series \nFirst meeting Sunday September 27\, 2020\, 1-5 pm (Pacific time zone)\nFollow up meetings: Sundays October 4\, October 11\, & October 25\, 1-4 pm (Pacific time zone)\nCost: $85 for the series of four sessions (First Session only\, $40) \n“Be still and know that I am God.” \nAre you feeling a desire to deepen your prayer or to learn about the Christian contemplative path? \nThis online introduction to Centering Prayer includes instruction\, group practice\, and opportunity for discussion and questions. \nCentering Prayer is a method of prayer which prepares us to more fully receive the gift of God’s presence. This is traditionally called contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer is the opening of mind and heart–our whole being–to God\, the Ultimate Mystery\, beyond thoughts\, words and emotions. Centering Prayer facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer–verbal\, mental\, or affective prayer–into a receptive prayer of resting in God. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God. \n~~~ \nMarty Badgett has been practicing Centering Prayer for the past 25 years. He has facilitated introductory workshops\, retreats\, and days of prayer for many years. He is currently the Northwest Bay Area Contemplative Outreach coordinator. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in fostering contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director dedicated to fostering Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices that help us become aware of God’s ever-present love. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer is a form of Christian silent mediation where one lets go of thoughts during periods of prayer typically lasting 20 to 30 minutes. \nIt is rooted in the self-emptying love that forms the heart of Jesus’ teaching and life. The effect on those who practice it is an ever-increasing awareness of God’s action and presence in the course of ordinary life. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with him. \nIn this introductory workshop\, led by the Rev. Tom Ward\, participants will learn the method and principles of this prayer practice and have the opportunity to experience this ancient method in a quiet\, reflective atmosphere. \nThis event takes place via Zoom; to participate\, you must have internet access and a computer or tablet with an internet connection.
