SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“Be still and know that I am God.”\n– Psalm 46:10 \nCentering Prayer is a receptive\, deep method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of the experience of God’s presence within us. It presents ancient Christian teachings in an updated form. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts new light on them. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. Through the regular practice of Centering Prayer\, many people discover the fruits of the Spirit: love\, joy\, peace\, patience\, self-control. \nThe workshop will introduce the four guidelines of Centering Prayer and will include two 20 minute silent Centering Prayer sessions. The teachings are based on Father Thomas Keating’s book\, Open Mind\, Open Heart. Follow up materials and resources will be provided. A donation is suggested for the presenters traveling expenses. \nThe co-presenters are the Reverends Jackie Falk and John Keller.\nFor more information and to RSVP contact\, Laura Petrie at petriedish57@gmail.com \nPlease note there is also a Centering Prayer group in person on Sundays @ 5:00 p.m. Eastern time – same location\, Messiah Lutheran Church.  Please email Laura Petrie if interested in attending\, petriedish57@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Two Session Event: February 27th and 28th\, 2023 from 6 PM to 8 PM (Central) each day. \nThe Introduction to Centering Prayer explores the place of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. As Jesus said\, “But when you pray\, go to your private room and\, when you have shut your door\, pray to your Father who is in that secret place\, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6) \nThe Introduction will guide you through the method of Centering Prayer and let you experience this prayer of silence. SUMMARY:Wisdom School: The Encounter with Evil – ZOOM OPTION
DESCRIPTION:“From time immemorial Wisdom Schools have emerged in times of global crisis or on the cusp of great leaps in human consciousness in order to help shepherd our planet through the transition. While there is academic teaching that goes on here\, that is not the primary business of a Wisdom school; the primary business is to help anchor human wholeness and to work with the core practices that sustain the transformation of consciousness.” — Wisdom Waypoints \nPlease Note: In-person retreat is full \nMercy Center\, Burlingame Centering Prayer Program presents\nWisdom School: The Encounter with Evil – ZOOM OPTION \nIn this timely advanced wisdom school\, we will be inquiring into the nature and presence of evil as a discernible force\, with a focus on these key questions: What is a useful\, contemporary understanding of evil? How can we effectively deal with evil\, at both an individual and collective scale? \nTeachings will draw from a wide variety of sources both spiritual and psychological\, with the emphasis first and foremost on the practical: learning to recognize and shield oneself better from the toxic effects of prolonged exposure to evil\, “speaking truth to power” in a way that wields real clout\, and as necessary\, to draw more intentionally and skillfully on assistance from realms beyond our own. \nWe will be exploring:\nthe metaphysics of evil with an emphasis on the process and relational nature of its arising\nthe psychology of evil and its potential spawning ground\nthe roots of collective psychosis\nthe dangerous blind spot in the Christian strategy of “love conquers all”\nconsiderations of personal responsibility\nthe remediating force of conscience and the costliness of engaging it \nBecause this is an advanced wisdom school\, a strong meditation practice and familiarity with the Christian wisdom tradition as laid out by Cynthia Bourgeault is strongly recommended. Join us on ZOOM through Mercy Center\, Burlingame\, CA. There will be an invitation to a wisdom way of approaching this material through a daily rhythm with periods of silence\, centering prayer\, teaching\, conscious conversation\, Gurdjieff Exercises and Movements\, chanting\, mindful work\, and contemplative free time. \nRetreat Leader & Centering Prayer Team:\nCynthia Bourgeault is a modern day mystic\, Episcopal priest\, writer\, and internationally acclaimed retreat leader. She divides her time between solitude in her seaside hermitage in Maine and a demanding schedule traveling globally to spread the recovery of the Christian contemplative and Wisdom paths. She is principal teacher for The Contemplative Society and the founding director of an international network of Wisdom schools\, uniting classic Christian mystical and monastic teaching with contemporary practices of mindfulness and embodied presence. \nHeather Ruce will be supporting our wisdom school experience through guiding us in daily Gurdjieff Movements. She is a wisdom spiritual director with training in a neurophysiology based approach to understanding the nervous system. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Christian Wisdom Tradition. \nJoy Andrews Hayter is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. These practices encourage us to lean into the Love that is constantly being offered within a relational web of Sacred Unity. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nZOOM Hosts:\nJesse Roger Burson is a father of three\, business owner\, retired Coast Guard officer and dedicated practitioner of meditation and Centering Prayer for over forty years. He has been attending Wisdom Schools and following the teachings of Cynthia Bourgeault since reading “The Wisdom Jesus” in 2017 and has been a Spiritual Director and Group Spiritual Director since 2019. Jesse is also an avid sailor and pilot! \nAlan Krema is a long time student of Cynthia Bourgeault and has attended multiple Wisdom Schools since 2010. He facilitates Wisdom practice groups focused on Centering Prayer\, Wisdom Way of Knowing\, and the Gospel of Thomas. He emphasizes the engagement of current issues with the embodied Wisdom of contemplative practice. He is actively engaged with Wisdom Waypoints and Contemplative Outreach and has introduced a variety of teachings from the Wisdom Way of Knowing lineage into the practice and prayer gatherings of Contemplative Outreach. He lives in the Chicago area. \nCONTACT\nTo register\, please see the link below.\nFor further assistance\, contact us at (650) 340-7474.\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org \nThese are unprecedented times. SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Lectio Divina\, a Latin term for “divine reading\,” is an ancient monastic practice of praying the Scriptures. The monks would gather in prayer and hear the scripture proclaimed. They would take a word or phrase that spoke to them into the activity of their day. Pondering this thought\, ruminating through it throughout their work\, they were aware of God’s presence. \nMany of you are quite familiar with Centering Prayer\, and have experienced how it has deepened your relationship with God. In this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Lectio Divina\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow participants. \nDuring Lectio Divina\, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart\,” as if one is in conversation with God. Lectio Divina includes moments of reading (lectio)\, reflecting on (meditatio)\, responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one’s relationship with the Divine. \nLectio Divina will bring you into a more intimate sense of the presence of God in the word of Scripture\, and you will experience that grace this word has to influence\, and indeed transform your life. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Introduction to Centering Prayer retreat to deepen your personal relationship with God\, and to prepare to receive the gift of contemplation. Introduction to Centering Prayer will allow you to be still and know God through this method of Christian silent prayer. \nThis retreat consists of four conferences of contemplative practice\, study\, and support. \nSession one is a deeper look into prayer\, specifically Centering Prayer\, as a relationship with God.\nSession two provides initial instruction into the practice of Centering Prayer itself\, with the introduction to the choice and purpose of your personal sacred word.\nSession three provides a deeper level of understanding of the Centering Prayer Practice that includes both the sacred word and silence as prayer\, and insight into your various processes of thought. All of these combine to open you to giving consent to God’s presence and action.\nSession four provides a connection between the method and practice of Centering Prayer and being fully present in everyday life by removing the obstacles to the state of union with God.\nAdditional retreats are scheduled throughout the year to enable you to enhance your regular practice of Centering Prayer.

The intensive track is recommended for people who have completed the introductory workshop and who have a regular practice of Centering Prayer. The post-intensive track is for those people who have previously made an eight-day intensive retreat. The post-intensive offers increased silence and additional periods of Centering Prayer. SUMMARY:Leaning Into Blessing: An Advent Online Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“The season of Advent means there is something on the horizon the likes of which we have never seen before … So stay. Sit. Linger. Tarry. Ponder. Wait. Behold. Wonder. There will be time enough for running. For rushing. For worrying. For pushing. For now\, stay. Wait. Something is on the horizon.” ―Jan L. Richardson \nAdvent is a season rich with anticipation as we prepare to honor the incarnation of the person of Jesus: he revealed to the world a life rooted in the heart\, at the intersection of time and timelessness. Alongside Mary\, pregnant with the Christ\, we enter the dark and soft stillness of winter; ripening with the blessing of generating the Christ in our own embodied lives. As we lean into the blessing\, cultivating our own deep “yes” parallel to Mary’s\, we have the opportunity to carry forth tending to the horizontal demands of the season from a profound fullness. Slowing and staying awake to the true meaning of this season\, we break the habitual excess of commercial consumerism\, instead offering the fruits of our awakened hearts. \nThis retreat will include the practices of silence\, Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, Visio Divina\, Audio Divina\, reflective writing\, sacred chanting\, and body prayers. Join us as we lean into the blessing\, sitting and lingering in the quiet\, readying our hearts to enter Christmas with humility\, compassion\, and great love; that we may offer what is needed. \nOptional Reading: Night Visions\, by Jan Richardson. We will be incorporating some material from this book and you are welcome to purchase it if you like\, but it is not necessary. Just come and sink into the season with us! \nRetreat Leaders:\nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with a background as a therapist and training in a neurophysiology based approach to trauma resolution. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Wisdom Tradition. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. These practices encourage us to lean into the Love that is constantly being offered within a relational web of Sacred Unity. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nPlease register at www.mercy-center.org or telephone 650-340-7474 \nHow will the virtual retreat work?\nYou are invited to join us from your own home as we practice integrating prayer with our daily lives\, in our homes\, and in our circumstances as they are. Check out the schedule (subject to change) below to get a sense of what our retreat will be like together. We hope that you will choose as much or as little of it as fits in your life\, on any given day. Let the rest go. SUMMARY:From Stillness to Being: Introductory Weekend in Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Get to know Centering Prayer\, a silent meditation form of letting go. Let the silence carry you and let the music move you in your vitality. \nCentering Prayer is an ancient\, simple and silent form of meditation. What makes it special is the welcome of the inexorable flow of thoughts and feelings. Centering prayer is not something we do; it’s something we stop doing; we do let go and return to our innermost being. Our conditioning lies like a veil over our inner being and allows us happiness and the meaning of our lives in things\, feelings\, relationships\, activities\, substances search – ultimately in vain. Through the recurring letting go in Centering Prayer over time some of our conditioning may dissolve. \nMusic-driven movement and our creativity are two other avenues to get through sheaths of our conditioning to come to our core. The weekend is nourished by these three roots: Centering Prayer\, Movement of vitality and creativity. \nWhen: Fri. 11 November dinner at 6pm – Sun 13 November approx. 2.30pm\nWhere: Wohlgemutsheim Castle\, Baumkirchen\, Tyrol\nCourse costs: € 170 in cash on site\, as well as accommodation and meals (see registration form)\nContact and information: mayr.georg@gmail.com \nGeorge Mayr: Authorized Presenter for Centering Prayer and member of Global teams from Contemplative Outreach; Coach for Power of live dance.\nMarianne Steinberg: graduate holistic art therapist and dance and gestalt therapist. \n\nflyer_GermanIntroWorkshop_11-13Nov2022-1\n\nDownload the flyer for this event here. \nRegistration form\nSurname\ne-mail\nPhone optional)\nRoom request\, full board\, price for the whole weekend. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer and the Mystical Imagination - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Outreach Chicago’s 2022 One-Day Fall Workshop\npresented by Carl McColman \n“Be still and know that I am God” is a promise from the Psalms: a promise that God may be known through stillness\, silence\, and contemplation. But how do we truly know God — and how does stillness truly invite us into this deeper way of knowing? \nBy weaving the wisdom of Centering Prayer with insights from Christian mystics like Julian of Norwich\, Ignatius of Loyola and Thomas Merton\, we can discover how silent prayer is more than just a way to consent to the Spirit’s presence in our lives: it is a tool for interior transformation and deep intuitive insight. When we learn to rest in the silence of Centering Prayer\, we learn how to be more truly human — a Christlike presence for healing and hope in our troubled world. \nThink of this day as a mini-retreat in your own home. When we gather on Zoom\, we will have time for Centering Prayer\, for spiritual exercises in the tradition of Ignatian spirituality\, along with conversation about how to integrate these practices into our daily life\, in response to the call of divine love. \nAbout Carl McColman:\nOur facilitator is the author of many books\, including Eternal Heart and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism. Based in Atlanta\, he is a popular retreat leader\, teacher\, and spiritual director. Carl is a lay Cistercian\, a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer Introductory Workshops\, and a popular blogger\, podcaster and retreat leader. Visit Carl online at www.anamchara.com

SUMMARY:Welcoming Prayer Introductory Workshop
DESCRIPTION:According to Fr. Thomas Keating\, “Welcoming Prayer is the practice that actively lets go of thoughts and feelings that support the false-self system. It embraces painful emotions experienced in the body rather than avoiding them or trying to suppress them.” This workshop introduces participants to the actual method of the Welcoming Prayer and provides an opportunity to practice. We’ll establish Welcoming Prayer’s place in Body Awareness Practice and include discussions of the human condition and the false-self system as conceptual background to Welcoming Prayer. \nThis program will be offered both in-person and online via Zoom. Information on how to access the program on Zoom will be sent to participants in advance.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Reach out\, reach out for me\nI’ll be there\, with a love that will shelter you\nI’ll be there\, with a love that will see you through.” \nThese words from an old 4 Tops Motown song\, articulate the promise God has given us through the ages\, demonstrated throughout Jesus’ ministry and brought to each of us every moment by the Spirit. \nCentering Prayer is a powerful way to open ourselves\, to “reach out\,” and invite the Spirit’s healing\, support\, inspiration and guidance into our everyday lives. It is a Christian form of meditation that serves as a method of movement into contemplative prayer. It leads us to live a contemplative life\, resting more and more in God\, being moved by the Spirit toward what Thomas Keating\, the founder of Contemplative Outreach\, called “pure faith\,” becoming better able to love\, work with and serve others. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Harvesting Grace: An Eco-Spirituality Contemplative Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“When (Jesus) asked his disciples to ‘look at the lilies of the field\,’\nI think he was asking them to read the book of nature as the book of God. …\nThe lilies do not simply reflect God; rather God is being God in the lilies.”\n– Ilia Delio\, Making All Things New \nThis contemplative retreat invites you to engage with the Sacred in nature and encounter God as the Creating and Sustaining Spirit of all. It will be a time to rest in body and “rest in the grace of the world.” Anchored in Centering Prayer (CP)\, the weekend will offer scheduled options including terra divina (sacred earth) exercises\, a labyrinth walk (weather permitting) and a communal prayer service on Saturday evening. However\, there will also be plenty of open time to explore the grounds\, read\, journal\, or simply enjoy the beauty of the land and waters of Long Island Sound. \nNo Centering Prayer experience is required. This weekend is for both beginners and long-time practitioners. \nClaire Rusowicz is a certified spiritual and retreat director and a spiritual director supervisor. She co-facilitates weekly online Centering Prayer groups. \nAnne Simpkinson has been practicing Centering Prayer since 1996. An Introductory CP workshop leader\, she has led retreats and Quiet Days in New York\, Massachusetts\, and Connecticut. While living in New York\, she served as co-coordinator of Contemplative Outreach for three years. She co-facilitates the weekly online Centering Prayer groups with Claire. \nSee the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Father Vincent Pizzuto - Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation - a hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and Online via Zoom videoconference. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided for in-person participants. This event will include two sessions of Centering Prayer in additional to Father Pizzuto’s talk. \nFather Vincent Pizzuto will be joining us for a full-day event titled “Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation.” In this presentation\, Father Pizzuto will be speaking to us about Jesus’ coming as a manifestation of a whole new world view: the Kingdom of God. \nThe gospel narratives are replete with the theme of transgression. Routinely\, Jesus drew his teachings and parables from the natural world\, familiar to those around him\, and used the most mundane images to shock his listeners into seeing the new world that was breaking upon them. In this new world—the kingdom of God\, as he called it—the very idea of holiness and what it meant to be holy was radically challenged and transformed. No longer was holiness to be identified with something “set apart\,” as the original Semitic root (qdš) implies. Rather\, the in-breaking of the kingdom was just that\, the realm of God breaking into the realm of humanity. This is why Jesus’ actions and teachings consistently emphasized the spirit of the law over the letter. He insisted that no religious observance was of greater importance than the practice of compassion and indiscriminate love for all. \nThus\, not only does Jesus transgress social and religious boundaries in his teaching and actions\, but so too as the “Incarnate One” does he transgress the very boundaries between heaven and earth. Throughout our Retreat\, Fr. Vincent will examine this theme of “transgression” in the gospels as a lens through which to understand and embody an authentic contemplative Christian discipleship in the modern world. We will gradually unfold contemplative discipleship as a call\, a vocation\, that begins as an encounter with Christ that is as communal as it is personal. It begins with the end of my world and the in-breaking of the kingdom. It begins with a death to myself\, and the rising of Christ within. And thus\, we will come to see that contemplative discipleship is thoroughly cruciform\, patterned on the paschal mystery of Christ’s dying and rising. It begins and ends in paradox. In order to live fully in Christ\, I must lose my life for the sake of the Gospel. \nAbout Father Vincent \nFather Vincent Pizzuto\, Ph.D. is Professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Mysticism in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. in New Testament Exegesis from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (2003). He has since published and presented internationally in the areas of New Testament Christology\, ecological discipleship\, marriage equality\, inter-religious dialogue\, Christian mysticism and contemplative Christian spirituality.
