SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Reach out\, reach out for me\nI’ll be there\, with a love that will shelter you\nI’ll be there\, with a love that will see you through.” \nThese words from an old 4 Tops Motown song\, articulate the promise God has given us through the ages\, demonstrated throughout Jesus’ ministry and brought to each of us every moment by the Spirit. \nCentering Prayer is a powerful way to open ourselves\, to “reach out\,” and invite the Spirit’s healing\, support\, inspiration and guidance into our everyday lives. It is a Christian form of meditation that serves as a method of movement into contemplative prayer. It leads us to live a contemplative life\, resting more and more in God\, being moved by the Spirit toward what Thomas Keating\, the founder of Contemplative Outreach\, called “pure faith\,” becoming better able to love\, work with and serve others. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Waking Up with the Enneagram: A Guide for your Contemplative Journey
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Enrichment Day with Rev. Nhien Vuong\, J.D.\, M.Div. \nThe Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for transformational development. A multi-dimensional model of consciousness\, the Enneagram equips each of us with a highly precise roadmap for embodying our divine potential. In this introductory Enneagram workshop\, you’ll gain insights into how the Enneagram maps our personality-based obstacles to Presence and provides a path from egoic to unitive consciousness. A focus is to explore the relationship between the Enneagram and Centering Prayer\, Welcoming Prayer\, Fr. Keating’s “emotional programs for happiness\,” and contemplative silence\, solitude\, and stillness. \nThis program will be offered both in-person and online via Zoom. Information on how to access the program on Zoom will be sent to participants in advance. \nThis program will include a morning and an afternoon session of Centering Prayer. \nReverend Nhien Vuong\, J.D.\, M.Div.\, is a contemplative Enneagram counselor\, consultant\, global community builder and founder of Evolving Enneagram. An ordained Unity minister and Accredited Enneagram Professional\, Nhien presents on an international stage\, offering a compassionate\, interspiritual path of transformation without dogma using the Enneagram as a guide for our individual and collective awakening. For the past several years\, Nhien has had the honor of presenting at some of the largest Enneagram events worldwide.

SUMMARY:Harvesting Grace: An Eco-Spirituality Contemplative Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“When (Jesus) asked his disciples to ‘look at the lilies of the field\,’\nI think he was asking them to read the book of nature as the book of God. …\nThe lilies do not simply reflect God; rather God is being God in the lilies.”\n– Ilia Delio\, Making All Things New \nThis contemplative retreat invites you to engage with the Sacred in nature and encounter God as the Creating and Sustaining Spirit of all. It will be a time to rest in body and “rest in the grace of the world.” Anchored in Centering Prayer (CP)\, the weekend will offer scheduled options including terra divina (sacred earth) exercises\, a labyrinth walk (weather permitting) and a communal prayer service on Saturday evening. However\, there will also be plenty of open time to explore the grounds\, read\, journal\, or simply enjoy the beauty of the land and waters of Long Island Sound. \nNo Centering Prayer experience is required. This weekend is for both beginners and long-time practitioners. \nClaire Rusowicz is a certified spiritual and retreat director and a spiritual director supervisor. She co-facilitates weekly online Centering Prayer groups. \nAnne Simpkinson has been practicing Centering Prayer since 1996. An Introductory CP workshop leader\, she has led retreats and Quiet Days in New York\, Massachusetts\, and Connecticut. While living in New York\, she served as co-coordinator of Contemplative Outreach for three years. She co-facilitates the weekly online Centering Prayer groups with Claire. \nSee the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Father Vincent Pizzuto - Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation - a hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid presentation being conducted both in person at The Center for Contemplative Living in Denver\, CO and Online via Zoom videoconference. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided for in-person participants. This event will include two sessions of Centering Prayer in additional to Father Pizzuto’s talk. \nFather Vincent Pizzuto will be joining us for a full-day event titled “Holy Transgression: Discipleship and the Incarnation.” In this presentation\, Father Pizzuto will be speaking to us about Jesus’ coming as a manifestation of a whole new world view: the Kingdom of God. \nThe gospel narratives are replete with the theme of transgression. Routinely\, Jesus drew his teachings and parables from the natural world\, familiar to those around him\, and used the most mundane images to shock his listeners into seeing the new world that was breaking upon them. In this new world—the kingdom of God\, as he called it—the very idea of holiness and what it meant to be holy was radically challenged and transformed. No longer was holiness to be identified with something “set apart\,” as the original Semitic root (qdš) implies. Rather\, the in-breaking of the kingdom was just that\, the realm of God breaking into the realm of humanity. This is why Jesus’ actions and teachings consistently emphasized the spirit of the law over the letter. He insisted that no religious observance was of greater importance than the practice of compassion and indiscriminate love for all. \nThus\, not only does Jesus transgress social and religious boundaries in his teaching and actions\, but so too as the “Incarnate One” does he transgress the very boundaries between heaven and earth. Throughout our Retreat\, Fr. Vincent will examine this theme of “transgression” in the gospels as a lens through which to understand and embody an authentic contemplative Christian discipleship in the modern world. We will gradually unfold contemplative discipleship as a call\, a vocation\, that begins as an encounter with Christ that is as communal as it is personal. It begins with the end of my world and the in-breaking of the kingdom. It begins with a death to myself\, and the rising of Christ within. And thus\, we will come to see that contemplative discipleship is thoroughly cruciform\, patterned on the paschal mystery of Christ’s dying and rising. It begins and ends in paradox. In order to live fully in Christ\, I must lose my life for the sake of the Gospel. \nAbout Father Vincent \nFather Vincent Pizzuto\, Ph.D. is Professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Mysticism in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. in New Testament Exegesis from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (2003). He has since published and presented internationally in the areas of New Testament Christology\, ecological discipleship\, marriage equality\, inter-religious dialogue\, Christian mysticism and contemplative Christian spirituality. In 2018 he published his second book\, Contemplating Christ: The Gospels and the Interior Life\, with Liturgical Press\, to be released in Spanish\, Contemplar a Cristo: Los Evangelios y la vida interior\, in January 2022 by Desclée de Brouwer. As an Episcopal priest Fr. Vincent serves as Vicar of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church and Retreat House in Inverness\, California. Working for the advancement of contemplative Christianity\, he has reinvigorated the mission and ministry of St. Columba’s through the introduction of contemplative eucharistic liturgies\, public lectures\, online courses\, directed retreats\, thought provoking sermons\, an online blog and a weekly online study of his book through the Meditation Chapel. \nTime listed are Mountain Time \nRegister using the link below

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: An 11th-Step Practice - Introductory Workshop via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We have found Centering Prayer to be a meaningful method for our daily 11th-step meditation practice. To share this method with others in 12-step recovery\, we are offering this workshop to teach participants about the practice of Centering Prayer. We will also have a talk about the human condition\, which will help explain why we need a daily 11th-step practice. Times noted are in Central Time (Chicago). \nIn addition to the workshop on September 10th\, registration includes continuing sessions on the four Saturday mornings following the workshop. These optional sessions will each last for about an hour and will allow workshop participants to join us to: 1) practice Centering Prayer together\, 2) learn more about the prayer practice and 3) ask questions. These continuing session will be held September 17 and 24 and October 1 and 8 at 9AM Central Time.

DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer as an 11th Step Practice Introductory Workshop and a presentation on The Human Condition \nWe have discovered that even when we live with great resolve\, determination\, and effort\, we cannot heal ourselves. Yes\, there are things we can do\, but we came to believe that healing is the work of our higher power. SUMMARY:Praying with the Ear of our Heart-A Lectio Divina Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The focus of the retreat will be a Lectio Divina Introductory Workshop based on Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings of the Four Senses of Scripture. The experience of praying with Holy Scripture will be supported by Centering Prayer periods with ample time for personal reflection and/or exploring the many trails on the partially wooded 140 acres in the hills of Pennsylvania. \nLectio Divina reveals the four senses of Scripture-the literal\, the allegorical\, the moral/behavioral and the unitive in a Spirit-led\, transformative experience of relationship with the Divine. Come and let the Spirit speak to your heart as you “hear” scripture revealed through this ancient monastic prayer form. \nLed by: Elizabeth Graboski-a longtime contemplative prayer practitioner and a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina for Contemplative Outreach. Currently serves with Contemplative Outreach Central Pennsylvania local chapter for the Spiritual Enrichment and Formation for Facilitators of Centering Prayer Groups. \nBethany Retreat Center\n1031 Germania Rd\, Frenchville\, PA 16836 \nOffering: $397.00 (Cost includes accommodations\, all meals & retreat)\nDeposit: $75.00\nArrival: 3:00-5:00 on Wednesday\, September 7\, 2022\nDeparture: 12:00 pm on Saturday\, September 10\, 2022 \n*Commuter option available. SUMMARY:Intro to Centering Prayer Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Whether your interest is deepening your relationship with God\, relief from the stress of daily life\, or learning about contemplative prayer\, why not take some time this summer to learn and practice Centering Prayer? There will be plenty of time to rest and enjoy the beautiful contemplative oasis of St. Clare’s Retreat House in the Santa Cruz mountains. The intention for this weekend retreat is to refresh the spirit and deepen our commitment to a regular practice of Centering Prayer. Beginner and experienced Centering Prayer practitioners are welcome. \nCentering Prayer is a time-honored prayer practice in the Christian contemplative tradition that has helped men and women to prepare for\, receive\, and deepen the gift of contemplative prayer. People have been practicing Centering Prayer throughout the centuries\, but it is different from what we may think of as prayer. It is not the type of prayer we are used to\, like praying out loud or asking for something\, or even giving thanks. It is moving deep within ourselves\, in silence\, saying nothing\, asking nothing\, just intending to be in the Presence of God\, and allowing God to be with us. An introductory retreat offers instruction and practice on the method of Centering Prayer and discussion about its conceptual background. We will learn from experienced teaching\, DVD’s and group discussion. We will also enjoy Eucharist\, as well as pray the Liturgy of the Hours (Morning and Evening Prayer). \nYou may register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Mystic Series: Gift of Tears
DESCRIPTION:In-person and via Zoom at the Center for Contemplative Living in Elm Grove\, Wisconsin\, USA \nIn ancient times contemplatives aspired to the Gift of Tears. Here and there it is treasured even today. Mingled perhaps with some ambivalence. We will touch on several perspectives of the nature of this delicate Gift: historical\, contemporary\, psychological\, and spiritual. We’ll also look at the different types and purposes of tears\, how the Gift manifests\, and key figures who’ve had the Gift of Tears. \nThe evening will begin with a 20-minute Centering Prayer sit\, followed by the presentation\, and time for Q&A and reflective discussion.  If you have not had previous exposure to Centering Prayer\, please let us know beforehand and we will arrange to give you a brief explanation of the method a few minutes before the event begins. \nPRESENTER: Debbie Harmon has practiced Centering Prayer for over 30 years. Since the 1990s\, she has been involved with Contemplative Outreach in the Midwest\, spoken on a variety of spiritual topics\, facilitated groups and retreats\, and been a commissioned presenter of the Introductory Centering Prayer Workshop. SUMMARY:Notes of Rest - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Contemplative Outreach of Chicago \nNotes of Rest is a musical-textual retreat\, which places meditations from a Bible passage and writings from Black contemplatives on a bed of music\, cultivating stillness\, introspection\, and creativity in communities so that all may find rest. The approach may be thought of as a kind of “Musica Divina\,” which uses the beauty and spiritual power of music to help workshop participants find their way to a quiet\, reflective interior space where we can be fully receptive to grace\, or what Thomas Keating described as “God’s presence and action within.” The event will start with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer prior to the 90-minute Notes of Rest workshop. Then there will be a half-hour break\, followed by an optional lecture on music and Black contemplative life and their unique contributions to Christian mysticism. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop -- via Zoom and in-person
DESCRIPTION:This event is both in-person and via Zoom. \n“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” (Mt 28:11) Centering Prayer\, a Christian form of meditation\, is a way to become more receptive to the Holy Spirit’s presence in our life\, supporting\, inspiring and leading us. Centering prayer serves as a method of movement into contemplative prayer\, a way to open ourselves to the Divine Presence\, to rest in God\, freeing us to better love\, work with and serve others. If you feel the Spirit calling you\, come explore Centering Prayer. Discover the possibility of resting in the healing presence of God\, of being better able to help in Jesus’ work of lifting burdens. \nThe Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop familiarizes participants with the method of Centering Prayer and its conceptual background and offers two opportunities to experience the prayer. The program will be led by Contemplative Outreach trained presenters. \nWhen/Where: Saturday\, May 14\, 2022\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm CDT (UTC -5) via Zoom and at The Center for Contemplative Living\, 890 Elm Grove Road\, The Village Court\, Building 1\, Elm Grove\, WI \nCost: $25

SUMMARY:Presence\, Prayer and Writing from the Heart Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them.\nIf a story comes to you\, care for them.\nAnd learn to give them away where they are needed.\nSometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.”\n– Barry Lopez in Crow and Weasel \nAll of us have myriad stories to tell. Some involve your family history\, spiritual journey\, experiences in Nature or a life-changing situation. Stories can take many form — memoir\, essay\, poem\, series of blog posts\, or journal entries — but the most compelling are the ones written from the heart\, those that touch and move us and sometimes even transform both the writer and reader. Writing from the heart demands attentiveness\, honesty\, courage and a commitment to engage with a creative process that pulls us into the unknown where we are often surprised at what surfaces. It’s a journey of discovery. And what can help are presence and prayer. \nThis writing retreat is structured for those currently working on a project\, those who want to start one\, or simply desire to spend time in beautiful surroundings playing with words. In addition to Centering Prayer sessions — silence can be a portal to the Source of creativity and truth-telling — there will be ample opportunities to write\, walk\, think and just be. \nAnne A. Simpkinson is an award-winning journalist\, editor and writing coach. She and her former husband Chuck founded Common Boundary\, a nonprofit organization that explored the relationship among psychotherapy\, spirituality and creativity. She co-authored Soul Work: A Field Guide for Spiritual Seekers and two anthologies\, Sacred Stories and Nourishing the Soul. When living in New York City\, she rode the media transformation from websites to digital communications in her positions with Beliefnet.com\, Prevention magazine\, WeightWatchers.com and Guideposts. She also served as Communications Director for Mercy by the Sea for several years. Anne has been practicing Centering Prayer (CP) since 1996. An Introductory CP Workshop facilitator\, she leads retreats\, workshops and Quiet Days in New York\, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Along with Claire Rusowicz\, she co-facilitates two weekly Centering Prayer Zoom groups as well as day and weekend retreats.
