SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: An 11th-Step Practice - Introductory Workshop via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We have found Centering Prayer to be a meaningful method for our daily 11th-step meditation practice. To share this method with others in 12-step recovery\, we are offering this workshop to teach participants about the practice of Centering Prayer. We will also have a talk about the human condition\, which will help explain why we need a daily 11th-step practice. Times noted are in Central Time (Chicago). \nIn addition to the workshop on September 10th\, registration includes continuing sessions on the four Saturday mornings following the workshop. These optional sessions will each last for about an hour and will allow workshop participants to join us to: 1) practice Centering Prayer together\, 2) learn more about the prayer practice and 3) ask questions. These continuing session will be held September 17 and 24 and October 1 and 8 at 9AM Central Time.

DESCRIPTION:Whether your interest is deepening your relationship with God\, relief from the stress of daily life\, or learning about contemplative prayer\, why not take some time this summer to learn and practice Centering Prayer? There will be plenty of time to rest and enjoy the beautiful contemplative oasis of St. Clare’s Retreat House in the Santa Cruz mountains. The intention for this weekend retreat is to refresh the spirit and deepen our commitment to a regular practice of Centering Prayer. Beginner and experienced Centering Prayer practitioners are welcome. \nCentering Prayer is a time-honored prayer practice in the Christian contemplative tradition that has helped men and women to prepare for\, receive\, and deepen the gift of contemplative prayer. People have been practicing Centering Prayer throughout the centuries\, but it is different from what we may think of as prayer. It is not the type of prayer we are used to\, like praying out loud or asking for something\, or even giving thanks. It is moving deep within ourselves\, in silence\, saying nothing\, asking nothing\, just intending to be in the Presence of God\, and allowing God to be with us. An introductory retreat offers instruction and practice on the method of Centering Prayer and discussion about its conceptual background. DESCRIPTION:In-person and via Zoom at the Center for Contemplative Living in Elm Grove\, Wisconsin\, USA \nIn ancient times contemplatives aspired to the Gift of Tears. Here and there it is treasured even today. Mingled perhaps with some ambivalence. We will touch on several perspectives of the nature of this delicate Gift: historical\, contemporary\, psychological\, and spiritual. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Contemplative Outreach of Chicago \nNotes of Rest is a musical-textual retreat\, which places meditations from a Bible passage and writings from Black contemplatives on a bed of music\, cultivating stillness\, introspection\, and creativity in communities so that all may find rest. The approach may be thought of as a kind of “Musica Divina\,” which uses the beauty and spiritual power of music to help workshop participants find their way to a quiet\, reflective interior space where we can be fully receptive to grace\, or what Thomas Keating described as “God’s presence and action within.” The event will start with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer prior to the 90-minute Notes of Rest workshop. And what can help are presence and prayer. \nThis writing retreat is structured for those currently working on a project\, those who want to start one\, or simply desire to spend time in beautiful surroundings playing with words. In addition to Centering Prayer sessions — silence can be a portal to the Source of creativity and truth-telling — there will be ample opportunities to write\, walk\, think and just be. \nAnne A. Simpkinson is an award-winning journalist\, editor and writing coach. She and her former husband Chuck founded Common Boundary\, a nonprofit organization that explored the relationship among psychotherapy\, spirituality and creativity. She co-authored Soul Work: A Field Guide for Spiritual Seekers and two anthologies\, Sacred Stories and Nourishing the Soul. When living in New York City\, she rode the media transformation from websites to digital communications in her positions with Beliefnet.com\, Prevention magazine\, WeightWatchers.com and Guideposts. DESCRIPTION:Have you been longing for a deeper\, more intimate relationship with God? The method of Centering Prayer\, a traditional form of Christian contemplative prayer\, gives you a way to say “yes” to God’s presence and action in your life. Come to learn the method or to renew your practice and go deeper. Our half-day format offers a relaxed way to hear the basics\, practice\, and ask questions.
