SUMMARY:Intro to Centering Prayer Workshop-IN PERSON or ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:“For God alone my soul waits in silence\, for my hope is from God.”\n– Psalm 62:5 \nDuring these challenging times Centering Prayer is a way to draw closer to God. It is a Christian form of meditation that serves as a method of movement into contemplative prayer\, a way to open oneself to the Divine Presence and\, through the healing of the Holy Spirit\, to be of greater service to those around us. \nThe benefits of Centering Prayer are experienced more in daily life than during the time of Centering Prayer: \nWe may find ourselves becoming more tolerant and less judgmental. \nWe may be able to come back into balance more easily after an emotional upset. \nA greater understanding of the needs of the human family emerges and leads us to respond with acts of mercy and compassion. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Central Time \nWhere: Center for Contemplative Living\, Elm Grove\, WI./Zoom is Optional \nCost: $20 is suggested. However\, no one will be turned away. \nSponsored by: Contemplative Outreach of Southeastern Wisconsin (COSEW). \nThe Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop familiarizes participants with the method of Centering Prayer and its conceptual background and offers two opportunities to experience the prayer. The program will be led by Contemplative Outreach trained presenters. \nIf requested\, the Zoom link information will be sent separate from the registration confirmation email. \nIf you have any questions about this course\, or about Zoom\, please contact Jack Dierks by email dierks.jack@gmail.com or phone or text at (414) 688-1677. \nPleas see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Spirituality in Everyday Life via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In this six-week course\, Fr. Keating continues to expand on the human condition\, using St. Anthony of Egypt as a paradigm of a pilgrim on the spiritual journey and shows how this early desert saint’s struggles mirror ours with the false self. Fr. Keating then takes us beyond the struggle to liberation from the false-self system and from our cultural conditioning. Fr. Keating continues explaining the psychological unloading process that lies at the heart of healing. \nHe describes four “moments” of Centering Prayer\, during which unloading occurs\, and compares the process to an archeological dig as the Divine Therapy takes us deeper through layers of our own woundedness. The course will also introduce us to Lectio Divina and the concept of transforming union\, as well as the Night of the Sense\, which are addressed more fully in Course 4. \nThe prerequisites are Courses 1 Basic Centering Prayer and 2 Human Condition. \nThere are two different times to choose from for this six-week course. Times listed are Mountain Time.  Please register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a way to explore or deepen your relationship with God? \nIn our introductory workshop to Centering Prayer\, you will discover a centuries-old prayer method. Centering Prayer consists of simply sitting in silence with God – beyond thoughts\, words\, and emotions – and opening our mind\, heart and whole being to the Ultimate Mystery. In this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Centering Prayer\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow initiates. \nCentering Prayer is based on a Christian contemplative practice first described in The Cloud of Unknowing\, written in the latter half of the 14th century. It calls one to abandon any consideration of God’s attributes and actions\, and to surrender to God’s influence in our lives. It is a very personal prayer practice but is often practiced in groups. It opens one to God’s infinite love and power to heal\, and opens the door to other related prayer practices around forgiveness\, and dealing with painful situations and emotions. Introduction to Centering Prayer is a sampling of the practice and its benefits. Basic Centering Prayer is the next step to a committed practice. \nSponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Colorado at The Center for Contemplative Living. Please see the link below to register. \nNOTE: Times listed for this event are Mountain Time Zone.

SUMMARY:“The Cloud of Unknowing” via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:An anonymous Christian contemplative from the middle ages wrote the classic work The Cloud of Unknowing. Centering Prayer\, of course\, is based on this seminal work of spiritual practice. The whole of The Cloud of Unknowing is about contemplation. The practice of contemplation goes beyond the mind. It goes into unknowing. The author is insistent on this point. Our minds cannot grasp God because God is transcendent mystery. Therefore\, we must pray beyond the thinking mind. \nIn this half-day retreat\, we will seek to learn how to deepen our practice of Centering Prayer from the mysterious author of The Cloud of Unknowing. There is deep teaching in this work concerning how we deal with thoughts\, humility\, intention\, and growth in divine unity. \nLed by LJ Milone\nHaving practiced Centering Prayer for 17 years\, LJ Milone has gone deep into the Catholic tradition. His spirituality is greatly influenced by Francis of Assisi\, Meister Eckhart\, the Cloud of Unknowing\, Thomas Keating\, Richard Rohr\, Anthony De Mello\, and\, ultimately\, the teachings of Jesus. As a pastoral minister at a Catholic parish in Silver Spring\, MD\, he has served the faith formation needs of children\, as well as adults since June 2007. A leader of many retreats\, lectures\, and classes on the topics of the teachings of Jesus\, contemplative prayer\, Centering Prayer\, Christian mysticism\, and contemporary spirituality\, LJ is also a spiritual director receiving his training at the Hesychia School of Spiritual Direction in Tucson\, AZ. \nRegister using this link (scroll to event date) https://contemplativeoutreachofmarylandandwashington.org/retreats-events/half-day-retreats-intro-workshops/

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Introductory Series - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:The Mercy Center Centering Prayer Program presents: \nFoundations of Centering Prayer \nLive Online Saturday April 17\, 2021 \n9:00 AM – 12:00 PM USA Pacific Time \nBe still and know that I am God \n“Silence is God’s first language\,’ says the sixteenth century mystic John of the Cross. And silence is the normal context in which contemplative prayer takes place. But…there is silence and then there is silence. There is an outer silence\, and outer stoppinCentering Prayer\, g of the words and busy-ness\, but there is also a much more challenging interior silence …” – Cynthia Bourgeault \nCentering Prayer prepares us to more fully enter the interior silence and receive the gift of God’s presence\, beyond thoughts\, words and emotions. Centering Prayer facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer–verbal\, mental\, or affective prayer–into a receptive prayer of resting in God. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God. \nWhether you are new to Centering Prayer\, or you would like to deepen your practice\, it is helpful to look again at the foundations of the practice. \nPlease join us for a morning of online instruction\, group practice\, and opportunity for discussion and questions. \nA $20 donation is suggested to support the program; however\, any donation you are able to contribute is gratefully accepted. Your presence is most important. \nPlease register using the link below. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, and Centering Prayer coordinator at Mercy Center. Joy is dedicated to fostering contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer and others within the Christian Wisdom tradition that help us become aware of God’s ever-present love. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world.

SUMMARY:The Welcoming Prayer (Part I & Part II) via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Southeast Wisconsin\nPart I: February 13\, 9:30-11:30 am US Central Time\nPart II: February 20\, 9:30-11:30 am US Central Time \nTo welcome and to let go is one of the most radically loving\, faith-filled gestures we can make in each moment of each day. It is an open-hearted embrace of all that is in ourselves and in the world. – Mary Mrozowski \nThe Welcoming Prayer is an embodied practice for consenting to God’s presence and action in our physical and emotional reactions to events and situations in daily life. It welcomes the Holy Spirit into the particular pain we experience\, whether physical\, emotional or mental. The Welcoming Prayer\, like Centering Prayer\, is designed to help us allow the Divine Therapist to remove the obstacles that keep God’s all-powerful grace from flowing in and through us and out into a world in desperate need. It provides a means for moving deeper into trust and intimacy with the living God that Jesus experienced. \nFebruary 13:\nPart I of the workshop will explore how The Welcoming Prayer addresses the human condition\, and will introduce the prayer and offer an opportunity to experience the prayer. \nFebruary 20:\nPart II will explore the Prayer in greater depth\, offer a second practice session\, and discuss how to bring the practice of The Welcoming Prayer into daily life. \nA regular practice of Centering Prayer is recommended as a prerequisite for this workshop. \nPresenter: Ten years ago\, Jack Dierks began practicing Centering Prayer and the Welcoming Prayer. In 2017 he completed training and is now a commissioned presenter of the Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop. Drawn to the Welcoming Prayer\, he has completed training and is eager to share it with others. Jack is a member of the Leadership Team of the Contemplative Outreach of Southeast Wisconsin chapter\, responsible for organizing and offering Introductory Workshops on Centering Prayer. Jack is a retired teacher. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Recovery Welcoming Prayer Workshop: Welcoming Prayer and Emotional Sobriety
DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces participants to the Welcoming Prayer practice\, a method of consenting to the Higher Power’s presence in our physical and emotional reactions to events and situations of daily life. \nWelcoming Prayer is a companion practice to Centering Prayer. Those in recovery have found both these practices to be great tools to deepen their spirituality and live in the present moment. It is similar to “pausing when we are upset” and detaching from the committee that drives our addictions and co-dependency. \nThis program will be offered online via the Zoom platform.\nInformation on how to access the program will be provided to participants in their registration confirmation email. \nPlease register using the link provided below.

SUMMARY:Thomas Keatings’ “Guidelines for Christian Life\, Growth\, and Transformation” Workshop via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Offered online via Zoom\, 1-4pm Central Time. \nThe title of this workshop\, “Guidelines for Christian Life\, Growth\, and Transformation” is also the title of the 12th and final chapter of Thomas Keatings’ classic primer of Centering Prayer\,  Open Mind\, Open Heart.  In these guidelines\, Thomas offers a conceptual spiritual and theological framework for this simple practice which has led and continues to lead many modern pilgrims to contemplative prayer.  In this workshop we will listen to and discuss these guidelines.  They might provide a conceptual introduction to Centering Prayer for those who are curious\, a support for those who are in the middle of the journey\, and reminder for long-time practitioners.  They are complementary to the practice of Centering Prayer\, which is the heart of the matter. \nThe Rev. Tom Ward is the retired university chaplain at the University of the South and now spends his days focusing on the contemplative dimension of the gospel\, teaching Centering Prayer and leading retreats.

The Method of Centering Prayer\, 3. Thoughts and Use the Sacred Word\, and 4. Deepening Our Relationship with God. \nThe remaining 5 meetings feature videos of Father Thomas Keating on Centering Prayer followed by discussion. \nAt the conclusion of the workshop\, participants are encouraged to find a group in the Meditation Chapel to join to continue their journey. \nRegister by sending an email to cthompson427@comcast.net.
