SUMMARY:Resting in God: An Invitation to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“In returning and rest\, you shall be saved;\nin quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”\n– Isaiah 30:15 \nSt. Gregory the Great wrote that contemplation is like “resting in God.” In Centering Prayer\, we’ve come to understand that “rest” is two-sided. First\, we can find comfort and peace in the Silence of the prayer but\, equally important\, “rest” also involves a surrender. Consenting to God’s Presence and action in our lives opens us up to the Sacred and allows Spirit to emerge in and through us in new and grace-filled ways. \nCome learn about and experience Centering Prayer. No experience is required. The day will be structured for those with little or no experience as well as those who want to renew or revitalize their Centering Prayer practice. \nThe schedule will include an introduction to the day’s theme\, an overview of the practice\, two 20-minute Centering Prayer sessions\, suggestions for daily practice\, and question and answer time. Lunch will be included.

The traditional four moments of the prayer (reading\, reflecting\, responding and rest) are explored as expressions of the four senses of scripture: the literal\, allegorical\, behavioral/moral\, and unitive senses. The monastic form of Lectio Divina is used for both individual and group experiences of the prayer. Prayer times will be followed by small group faith sharing. The fruits and gifts of Becoming a Word of God will be explored using the Lectio Divina method on a personal life experience. \nOur time together includes periods of silent prayer\, such as Centering Prayer\, to support the praying of Holy Scripture. Profound silence helps us open our hearts and minds to hear with the ear of our hearts both the presented conference materials and the scripture we pray. \n  \nPresenter Training\nSaturday\, August 8\, 2020 @ 4:15 – 5:15 PM CDT\nWhen the Immersion Retreat concludes\, the service team will offer presenter training for\nqualified participants. One must be a Contemplative Outreach commissioned presenter of\nCentering Prayer. To learn more about this presenter training\, please contact\nMike Potter at r.mike.potter@gmail.com \n  \nRecommended Reading\nThe Lectio Divina Immersion Retreat is based on the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating and Sr. Maria Tasto\, who designed the Lectio Divina workshops under his guidance. The Service Team recommends reading Maria’s book The Transforming Power of Lectio Divina\, before or after the retreat. It can be purchased from Contemplative Outreach’s online store here. \n  \nZoom Information\nThe Immersion Retreat will be offered on the Zoom platform. If you do not already have a Zoom account please download your own free Zoom account at https://www.zoom.us/. If you have a device that uses apps\, you will want to download the Zoom app. You will want to have your account set prior to logging into the retreat’s first session. SUMMARY:Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer is a form of Christian silent mediation where one lets go of thoughts during periods of prayer typically lasting 20 minutes. It is rooted in the self-emptying love that forms the heart of Jesus’ teaching and life. The effect on those who practice it is an ever-increasing awareness of God’s action and presence in the course of ordinary life. \nIn this introductory workshop led by Tom Ward\, participants will learn the method and principles of this prayer practice and have the opportunity to experience this ancient method in a quiet\, reflective atmosphere. For more information go to www.stmaryssewanee.org

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Dual-Track Intensive Post-Intensive Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This 8-day silent workshop\, led by Rev. Brad Smith\, is an opportunity for practitioners of Centering Prayer to deepen their contemplative journey in the contemporary world. It is a week-long experience integrating contemplation and action through silence\, solitude\, and community. \nThe retreat offers two tracks. The intensive track is recommended for people who have completed the introductory workshop and who have a regular practice of Centering Prayer. The post-intensive track is for those people who have previously made an eight-day intensive retreat. The post-intensive offers increased silence and additional periods of Centering Prayer. Both the intensive and post-intensive Centering Prayer retreat provide daily experiences of silence\, solitude\, walking\, hiking\, yoga\, and spiritual companionship to foster an ever-deepening level of interior silence and awareness of the presence of God in everyday life. \nScholarship assistance is available for those with financial need. Please contact St. Mary's Sewanee for more information. To register\, go to www.stmaryssewanee.org

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer\, Introductory Program
DESCRIPTION:On Demand Retreat: This webcast is available at any time you are ready to take the program. There are several other bundled studies available in one registration. You can register for the event at:  \nhttps://retreats.houseofblessings.org/p/cp \nTraining in silent prayer: Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer. In this prayer\, we experience God's presence within us. It is closer than breathing\, closer than thinking\, closer than consciousness itself. This prayer form\, as Fr. Keating says\, is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. \nCentering Prayer Adds depth to prayer life: Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Centering Prayer adds depth of meaning to all prayer. It facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer – verbal\, mental or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. \nMeant for all people: This method is open to all people. There are no requirements or pre-requisites\, only your willingness to spend a few minutes twice a day.  \nWebcast: This webcast is available at any time you are ready to take the program.
