SUMMARY:Present to Presence: A Centering Prayer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:God is always in and with us—closer to us than our own breath—but we are not always with God. Our harried\, over-scheduled\, noisy lives and patterns laid down in childhood prevent us from simply being with God. Centering Prayer is a way to re-member disparate parts of ourselves\, gather scattered energies\, and connect with the dynamic\, creative God that loves us more than we know. \nCentering Prayer is a way to immerse ourselves in silence and open to God’s presence within and all around us. By being present to Presence\, we open to a dynamic\, ever-creating God\, who heals\, transforms\, and loves us beyond measure. \nThis retreat\, intended for those who would like to explore Centering Prayer or re-ignite their practice\, will introduce the basics of Centering Prayer; offer opportunities to experience the prayer\, walking meditation\, and lectio divina; and explore ways to anchor a Centering Prayer practice in your life. There will also be time to walk the grounds\, read\, or rest. \nPlease see the link below for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Living into the Practice of Centering Prayer - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Where are you on your spiritual journey? \nWhether you consider yourself a beginning practitioner or have an established practice of many years\, God is always calling us into a deeper relationship. How are you living into your practice\, and what stumbling blocks or obstacles have you encountered? Bring your questions and join your fellow Centering Prayer practitioners for this examination of the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating and other spiritual leaders in support of deepening our daily prayer practice. \n“The spiritual journey is not a career or a success story. It is a series of humiliations of the false self that become more and more profound. These make room inside us for the Holy Spirit to come in and heal. What prevents us from being available to God is gradually evacuated. We keep getting closer and closer to our center.” – Thomas Keating\, The Human Condition\, 38 \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:The Tree of Life: Esoteric Christianity and the Perennial Mystical Tradition: In person and online
DESCRIPTION:Esoteric Christianity delves into the hidden\, mystical dimensions of Christian teachings\, emphasizing personal spiritual experience over doctrine. It deeply explores divine wisdom\, inner transformation\, and powerful\, energizing symbols. The Perennial Mystical Tradition explores the fundamental and universal truths of spirituality. It emphasizes direct\, personal encounters with the Divine and transcendent experiences\, suggesting that at their core\, all spiritual paths lead to the same ultimate reality. Together\, they offer a profound\, unifying spiritual perspective. Fr. Michael expertly guides us through this day of learning and experience. \nThis event includes sessions of Centering Prayer. \nFor more information and to register\, please see the link below.

SUMMARY:Brother Lawrence and Practice of the Presence with Carmen Acevedo Butcher - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Do you have your summer spiritual reading list ready yet? This book is one to add! Join us for a delightful introduction to Brother Lawrence\, a humble mystic with a powerful take on faith\, love and practicing presence. Carmen Acevedo Butcher translated writings by and about him in her 2022 book Practice of the Presence. In this presentation she’ll introduce Brother Lawrence and share her perspective on his life and spiritual path. If you’ve read the book\, bring your questions. If you haven’t read it yet\, bring your curiosity and be prepared to befriend this kind and gentle teacher. \nAn excerpt from the book: \n“I know that to do this [practice of Presence]\, the heart must be empty of all other things because God wants to enjoy it completely\, and Love cannot enjoy it completely without emptying it of all that is not God\, since without our full attention\, God cannot act in it\, or do in it what they please. \nNo way of life in this world is kinder or more gratifying than continual conversation with God. Only those who practice it and savor it can understand this. I do not suggest\, however\, that you do it for this reason. We must not be looking for consolations from this practice\, but must do it from a motive of love and because God wants a loving approach.” (page 74\, Practice of the Presence) \nA Little About Brother Lawrence\nBrother Lawrence lived during the 1600s\, serving as a humble kitchen worker at a monastery in France. He mostly remained in the shadows of his community\, yet he surrendered to a spiritual life that was profound. Poor\, living with a disability\, lacking a formal education\, enduring a time of plague and civil unrest\, he found God in the depths of his soul\, experiencing God’s loving presence throughout the day. His personal struggles and life-tested spiritual wisdom will resonate with spiritual seekers today as he invites us into a practice of Presence that is both accessible and deeply transformative. \n“Through the path that Brother Lawrence proposes to us\, little by little\, as the presence of God becomes familiar and occupies our inner space\, the joy of being with Him grows\, graces and spiritual riches blossom\, and even daily tasks become easy and light.” — Pope Leo XIV on how Brother Lawrence’s writing has shaped his spiritual life for knowing and loving the Lord. (Vatican News\, Dec. 11\, 2025) \nAbout this Translation\nSeveral translations have been published over the years — the first as a pocket-size 1692 edition. Brother Lawrence’s writings are considered a spiritual classic\, beloved by people of varying spiritual paths and religious traditions. With this new translation\, Carmen Acevedo Butcher brings a fresh presentation leaving behind dogmatic\, binary language. The result is text that is more relatable for our times\, without losing the charm and comfort of this extraordinary spiritual guide. \nRecording: The presentation will be recorded and sent to all registrants. Participant questions and answers will be removed to preserve safe space and privacy. \nAbout Carmen Acevedo Butcher \nCarmen Acevedo Butcher is an internationally acclaimed speaker and an award-winning translator\, author\, poet\, teacher\, and workshop leader. Martin Laird calls her translation of Brother Lawrence’s Practice of the Presence “the new standard.” The book is also named to a Spirituality & Practice Best Books List. She has also translated the Cloud of Unknowing. At the University of Georgia she earned an MA and a PhD in Medieval Studies\, Phi Beta Kappa. As a Fulbright Scholar at the University of London\, she worked with monastic manuscripts in London and Oxbridge libraries and translated homilies by the tenth-century Benedictine abbot\, Ælfric of Eynsham. She teaches in the College Writing Programs at the University of California\, Berkeley. Carmen is core faculty at the Center for Action and Contemplation\, and is the Dean. \nTime listed is Mountain Daylight Time (Denver\, Colorado) \nClick the website link below to register.

SUMMARY:Silence that Connects the World – Session 3 (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Session 3. Letting Go of Thoughts \nTheme: Thoughts are inevitable; the practice is about returning gently. \n“Centering Prayer is not about developing concentration or attaining a clear mind. SUMMARY:8 Day Silent Intensive and Post-Intensive Retreat with Father Bill Sheehan
DESCRIPTION:Come rest in silence with other contemplative companions\, away from the busyness of daily life\, and allow the mind\, body\, and spirit to surrender to God’s presence and action within. \nThis 8 day retreat offers a more in-depth experience of silent prayer for those who already have an established practice of Centering Prayer of 6 months or more. It is an opportunity for deeper union with God through a communal sharing of silence and stillness. For those making their first weeklong silent retreat\, the Intensive\, we will be using the video series by Thomas Keating\, The Spiritual Journey. The simultaneous Post Intensive track includes additional time in silent prayer instead of video presentations for those who have previously made an Eight Day Intensive Retreat. \nThis retreat offers a double track simultaneously: Intensive I and Post Intensive. If this is your first Centering Prayer retreat of this length the Spiritual Journey Videos are shown in Intensive I. They lay a necessary foundation for the practice for life and especially intensive retreats. \nIntensive I: There will be 3 sets of two 30-minute periods of Centering Prayer daily and 2 sessions of watching video talks from Fr. Thomas Keating’s Spiritual Journey series with optional discussion. \nPost-Intensive: There will be 3 sets of two 30-minute periods plus two additional 30-minute periods of Centering Prayer daily. \nLectio Divina and a optional contemplative Eucharist will be offered daily for everyone\, as well as optional soul-friending with staff. \nThe retreat will be facilitated by Contemplative Outreach staff: Father Bill Sheehan\, OMI\, Marty Badgett\, Mary Beth Rhiner\, Jim McElroy\, Kristina Frank and Susie Brent. \nTo Support Your Retreat Experience: A daily practice of Centering Prayer for 6 months or longer is recommended. \nPlease see the link below for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Sacred Circle Dance as a Companion to Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“God is not remote from us; . . . on the contrary\, at every moment God awaits us in the activity\, the work to be done\, which every moment brings.”\n-Teilhard de Chardin\, Hymn of the Universe \nDuring this in-person retreat\, we’ll introduce contemplative dances from the Sacred Circle Dance tradition. These simple movements\, done in a group setting\, help us unite mind\, heart\, and body to deepen our prayer practice. Together we’ll explore how the combination of music and movement can be a companion to Centering Prayer\, in which we open our hearts to consent to God’s presence and action within us. \nPresented by Suzi Kindervatter\, former COMW team member and veteran teacher of Sacred Circle Dance\, and Linda Hall\, co-coordinator of COMW. \nPlease see the link below to register.
