SUMMARY:Creating Self-Compassion Through Centering Prayer – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Blair Ashby over six Monday evening sessions \nA foundational gift of practicing Centering Prayer is that we also begin caring for our mental and emotional well-being during our prayer sits. Fortunately\, this is also one definition of self-compassion. Frequently\, we start noticing this gift with a simple thought like\, “my days feel better since I began Centering Prayer.” Centering Prayer creates self-compassion because it requires us to learn and repeat the process of awareness (being present)\, acceptance\, and letting go while consenting to the presence and action of the Divine within us. \nWhat is happening in our brains biologically as we repeat this process of awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go? How does this process impact our mental and emotional well-being? The good news is when we do Centering Prayer\, the work of the Spirit is teaching us self-compassion\, and this class will help us understand some of the transformations enacted in this process. Finally\, by aiding our developing awareness\, acceptance\, and letting go\, the course will also offer us additional skills to increase compassion toward ourselves and others. \nOver the six weeks\, we will explore the physical changes Centering Prayer brings about in our brains. Then\, we will explore the corresponding mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformations resulting from those changes. Most importantly\, in every class\, we will practice those tools for creating self-compassion by discussing what we experience; we will learn from each other. Through this weekly repetition\, participants will habituate new ways of caring for themselves. As we practice\, our lives will feel more meaningful\, grounded\, and empowered to share ourselves in the world through God-given grace. This class will include session of Centering Prayer. \nAbout Blair Ashby \nIn 1994\, Contemplative Outreach International asked Blair to transfer the Christian Contemplative Heritage video series to audio cassettes. In the first fifteen minutes of the introductory tape\, Fr. Thomas said so much about God and reality that Blair’s head exploded and unknowingly germinated a desire to experience and eventually teach this God-created reality. In 1997\, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado asked Blair to record Fr. Thomas live\, and Blair has been recording the annual conferences and fall retreats ever since. Through personal relationships with Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. Tony D’Souza (Anthony DeMello’s apprentice)\, and the dozens of spiritual teachers he has recorded\, Blair has gained deep contemplative insights. He has practiced Centering Prayer and self-compassion for the past twenty-eight years. \nThis is a six-week class\, offered on Monday evenings\, October 13 – November 16\, 2026\nTimes listed are mountain time (Denver\, CO) \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Silent Centering Prayer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Outreach of San Diego County is hosting a Fall Retreat at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside\, California\, on October 22-25. Each year we look forward to this deep drink of silence and spaciousness that helps to refresh our ongoing prayer journey. Facilitated by the peaceful environment of the Abbey\, graced by the field of prayer that emerges when we center together “in person\,” these four days and three nights are an opportunity to briefly step away from everyday life and rest in the welcoming heart of Christ. \nOur schedule will include several periods of group Centering Prayer with meditative walks\, Lectio Divina\, contemplative worship\, a Friday night video with discussion\, free time for solitude or wandering the Abbey grounds\, and options to join the Benedictine monks for liturgy of the hours and Sunday Mass. The cost of the retreat\, $450\, includes a single room with a bathroom and all meals. Grand silence (including meals) starts on the second morning of the retreat. Scholarships are available if needed. Prerequisite: At least six months of daily Centering Prayer practice. \nTo sign up for this retreat\, email a letter of intention to cosdc.info@gmail.com. We will send you a registration form. Registration with a $50 deposit is due by October 1\, 2026. Space is limited to 23 participants. A waiting list will start once registrations have filled.

SUMMARY:The Good Eye Opens: An Introduction to Contemplative Photography (in-person and online)
DESCRIPTION:A Zen teacher observed that the moment we intellectualize what we see\, it is no longer what we saw. Contemplative photography invites a different way of seeing—direct\, fresh perception unfiltered by thought. From a still\, silent\, receptive mind\, mindful photographing opens a richer visual field beyond concepts\, revealing greater beauty\, clarity\, elegance\, and poignancy. This is not merely a photography workshop\, but a practice of cultivating nonconceptual awareness\, allowing the camera to express perceptions precisely as they arise in present-moment experience without distraction or judgment. \nThis program will be offered both in-person and online via Zoom. Information on how to access the program on Zoom will be sent to participants in advance. \nThis program will include morning and afternoon sessions of Centering Prayer. Times listed are in Eastern (New York) time.

SUMMARY:Opening to God’s Being and Becoming - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:2-part Online Centering Prayer Retreat Series \nGod — the source of true joy and lasting peace — is not outside or at a distance from us. God is the very source and ground of our being\, closer than breath. \nAs the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing writes\, “God is your being.” \nAcross two spacious online retreats\, we will explore Centering Prayer as a way of opening to both the Being and Becoming of God within us. First\, resting more deeply in Divine Presence\, and then allowing the Presence to take form in the way we live. \nThis is a 2-Part Retreat Series\, taking place Saturday October 24 & November 21st. You can register for just one of the retreats if you wish to via a link on the registration page. \nRetreat One: BEING: Exploring consenting to the Presence\, rooting into the Ground of Being within. \nRetreat two: BECOMING: Exploring consenting to God’s activity\, the unfolding of God’s life within us. \nJoin for one or both retreats.\nLed by Keith Kristich \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Retreat: Five- or Eight-Day Centering Prayer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer is a form of Christian silent meditation rooted in the self-emptying love that forms the heart of Jesus’ teaching and life. This retreat is an opportunity to deepen one’s contemplative journey in the contemporary world. The retreat offers two tracks: a five-day track\, recommended for individuals with an established and regular practice of Centering Prayer\, and an eight-day track\, intended for those who have maintained a regular practice of Centering Prayer and previously participated in an intensive retreat. The intensive and post-intensive tracks are available for the five-day; only the post-intensive track for the eight-day. The Intensive Retreat includes the human condition teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating. \nThe retreat has two options:\nFive-Day: October 26-30\, 2026\nEight-Day: October 26 – November 2\, 2026 \nThe retreat begins for all tracks on Monday\, October 26\, with check-in from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. A welcome session will follow at 4:15 PM and optional Vespers at 5:00 PM.\n The retreat concludes at 10:00 AM on the final day for both tracks. SUMMARY:Five-Day Intensive/Post-Intensive Centering Prayer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In Contemplative Outreach (CO) Centering Prayer retreats\, practitioners are given an opportunity to deepen their practice and relationship with God by joining with others in community for the experience of immersion in contemplative prayer apart from ordinary life. Retreats are a way to take one’s relationship with God and one’s practice deeper. They offer time and space away from the busyness and demands of daily life\, and allow the mind\, body\, and spirit to surrender to God’s presence and action within. \nThis retreat will offer two tracks — Intensive and Post-Intensive. The retreat will be held at the Benedictine Hospitality Center in Ferdinand\, Indiana. \nThe Benedictine Hospitality Center is operated by the Sisters of St. Benedict\, one of the largest Benedictine communities of women in the United States. Monastery Immaculate Conception was founded in 1867 by four young Benedictine sisters who came to Ferdinand to teach the children of area settlers. \nPlease see the link below for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Praying with the Aramaic Jesus: Finding Inspiration and Purpose (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Joy Andrews Hayter \nYou all are shining radiance\, flowing together in time outside of time. Let go of trying to define or limit yourselves\, boxing in the radiance within: but let your inner light bear witness to the Holy within you\, shining forth all around you. —Matthew 5:14-15\, an interpretation from the Peshitta* text in Aramaic \nAs you read the passage above\, how does it sit with you? What sensations\, feelings\, images come up for you? \nWe already know that the words of Jesus are full of inspiration and advice on how to live a life with purpose and meaning\, anchored in the Living One. When we look at the words from the Aramaic—the language Jesus spoke—even more dimensionality shines forth\, almost like a prism that splits white light into its many colors. These additional dimensions tell us about our wholeness\, our oneness with the divine\, and about the love that can shine through us\, illuminating and inspiring our neighbors. \nYou might be wondering how this version of scripture above emerged so differently from what we read in a standard bible. The roots of many Aramaic words have multiple meanings\, inviting us to multiple levels of inference and exploration. In particular\, when we approach these readings with a deeper consciousness\, we may find these interpretations to be delightful fruit for our prayer life—our intimate walk with Ultimate Reality. \nIn this experiential presentation\, Joy will: \nShare how Jesus and his followers used Aramaic in their time.\nLead us in chants using the Aramaic language so we can explore the language’s pure sounds as Jesus (“Yeshua” in Aramaic) would have heard them.\nExplore two scripture verses with us in the style of Lectio Divina\, with a time for sharing.\nOur time together will also include 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nThis experience may inspire you to discover more dimensions within your own being\, and provide insight into how we might express the love that Yeshua encourages us to share. This presentation will include a Centering Prayer session. \nRecording Note: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording within two weeks of the event. \nTimes listed are Mountain Time\, Denver\, Colorado \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:Guard of the Heart – via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:“One practice to bring the effects of contemplative prayer into daily life is traditionally known as “Guard of the Heart.” This consists of letting go of every emotional disturbance as it arises and before we start thinking about it. This method is more sophisticated than dismantling the emotional programs for happiness because it deals with the whole of life. It expresses our ongoing intention to be with God in the present moment and sustains it.” (Fr. Thomas Keating\, 2017) \nThis class will teach the practice of “Guard of the Heart” (Also referred to as “Watchfulness” or “Presence Practice”) and how it compliments our Centering Prayer\, and the practices of the Welcoming Prayer and the Active Prayer Phrase. We will learn the three ways any afflictive thought or emotional disturbance can be instantly released as it arises. Join us for this enriching and deepening complementary practice. This class will include one 20-minute Centering Prayer session. \nTimes listed are Mountain Time. \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:A Friar in the Kitchen: Practicing the Presence of God with Brother Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:These days there are a plethora of books on topics such as ordinary mysticism or finding God in everyday life\, and they all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the one who started the trend in the mid-17th century: Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection\, who was born into humble circumstances in Herimenil\, Lorraine\, in 1614. Assigned to cook and wash pots and pans in the kitchen of a monastery just outside Paris at the age of 28\, Brother Lawrence regularly stopped working for a moment throughout the day and\, despite the many hardships he suffered\, continually lifted his heart to God in thankfulness for his life and its many blessings. \nIn this three-hour retreat\, we will learn how Brother Lawrence drew ever closer to God and his fellow friars by worshiping and welcoming the Divine presence at every opportunity–at work\, and even during corporate prayer. The spiritual maxims and letters in his bestselling little book\, The Practice of the Presence of God\, provide a template for how we too might walk in his discalced footsteps almost five centuries later. \nMeet the Presenter\nThe Rev. Tim Grayson’s contemplative journey began in his early twenties when he took a course in Transcendental Meditation. An Episcopal priest\, he has had a lifelong interest in Christian mysticism and has practiced Centering Prayer for 14 years. As well as serving on the coordinating committee of COMW\, Tim is a board member of Listening Hearts Ministries and enjoys leading retreats for both organizations.

SUMMARY:Becoming Aware and Releasing Obstacles to Grace Through Centering Prayer (in-person and online)
DESCRIPTION:Mythic membership consciousness invites us to examine not only the groups and institutions we over‑identify with to belong\, but also the beliefs\, values\, family norms\, and cultural patterns that shape us. Through Centering Prayer\, we become aware of the emotional programs through which we seek happiness and belonging. While belonging is central to spiritual life\, this workshop invites us—through silence\, reflection\, and contemplative journaling—to gently release attachments that inhibit grace and open us to God\, freedom\, and deeper relationship with all creation. \nThis program will be offered both in-person and online via Zoom. Information on how to access the program on Zoom will be sent to participants in advance. \nThis program will include morning and afternoon sessions of Centering Prayer. \nTimes listed below are in Eastern (New York) Time.

SUMMARY:Opening to God's Being and Becoming

SUMMARY:The Deepening Stages of Consent: An Advent e-Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Deepening Stages of Consent\nAn Advent e-retreat\nMonday November 30 – Thursday December 24\, 2026\nFree; suggested love offering $60 USD\nFacilitated by Pamela Begeman\, Justin Coutts and Matt Scrimgeour \n“The essential meaning of the Incarnation is that [unconditional love] is totally available. Centering Prayer is simply a humble method of trying to access that infinite goodness by letting go of ourselves. Consent to God’s presence and action symbolized by the sacred word is nothing else than self-surrender and trust.”\n– Thomas Keating\, Intimacy with God \nInspired by teachings of Thomas Keating buried within video footage filmed for the original series\, “The Gift of Life: Death & Dying\, Life & Living\,” this e-retreat explores the deepening consents experienced in an ongoing\, evolving practice of Centering Prayer and the contemplative life. Fr. Thomas explores four levels of consent within the greater consent in Centering Prayer: \n\nsolitude\ninterior silence\nself-forgetfulness\nand consent to our nothingness.\n\nBringing the teachings of Thomas Keating into dialogue with the author of The Cloud of Unknowing\, we will explore how contemplative practice deepens and changes over time – both “on the cushion” and in experiences of daily life. \nThis e-retreat invites you … \n… into an intentional\, devotional Advent experience\n… to nuance and evolve your Centering Prayer practice\n… to deepen your experience of living a contemplative life\n… to share in community \nYou can expect: \n\nTwo emails per week on Monday and Thursday.\nThe Monday email will include a short video with reflection and commentary\nThe Thursday email will be a prayerful liturgy that weaves themes of Advent and consent into prayers\, rituals and practice.\nThere will be two live weekly Zoom prayer groups to support your practice in community\, each including a time of Centering Prayer and then a slightly different practice format – one reflective and one with liturgical prayer and ritual. The groups will be recorded for those that cannot attend live.\n\nMonday\, noon – 1pm Eastern (New York) time (5pm GMT\, 11am CT\, 9am PT)\nThursday\, 6-7pm Eastern time (11pm GMT\, 5pm CT\, 3pm PT)\n\n\n\nFor those that are interested\, a follow-up Zoom group for practice\, conversation and sharing during the week of December 28 \nPlease register using the link below. SUMMARY:Removing Obstacles for Transformation...Moving Toward Union
DESCRIPTION:“When we are not thinking\, analyzing\, or planning\, and place ourselves in the presence of God we open ourselves to the content of the unconscious.”\n– Thomas Keating \nWhat keeps us from the presence that we know is always with and through us? We will create the space in meditative exercise and silence for the work of the Divine Therapist to meet the obstacles and let go. Optional group lectio allows God to speak to us in the depth of prayer without words. This inner work benefits all of creation. \nLocated at Siena Center in Racine Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan \nPlease see the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Listen to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart.” \nLectio Divina\, a Latin term for “divine reading\,” is an ancient monastic practice of praying the scriptures. The monks would gather in prayer and hear the scripture proclaimed. They would take a word or phrase that spoke to them into the activity of their day. Pondering this thought\, ruminating on it throughout their work\, they were aware of God’s presence. \nLectio Divina is a traditional way of cultivating friendship with Christ. It is a way of listening to the texts of scripture as if we were in conversation\, with Christ suggesting the topics. This daily encounter with Christ leads beyond mere acquaintanceship to an attitude of friendship\, trust and love. The conversation simplifies and gives way to communing. \nDuring Lectio Divina\, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart\,” as if one is in conversation with God. Lectio Divina includes moments of reading (lectio)\, reflecting on (meditatio)\, responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one’s relationship with the Divine. \nHow is Lectio Divina Different from Bible Study \nBible Study is the reading of the scriptures for information and an understanding of the context of the passage. It provides a solid conceptual background for the practice of Lectio Divina. In contrast\, Lectio Divina is prayer that leads us into the deeper meaning of scripture and the transformation of our lives. This contemplative reading and listening of the scriptures is compatible with well-grounded interpretation of the Bible. \nLectio Divina will bring you into a more intimate sense of the presence of God in the word of scripture\, and you will experience the grace this word has to influence\, and indeed\, to transform your life. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the basics of Lectio Divina\, experience it in a guided setting\, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow participants. \nRecording Note: This event will be recorded. All registrants will receive a copy of the Zoom recording within two weeks of the event. \nTimes listed are mountain time\, Denver\, Colorado \nClick the website link below to learn more and register. Scholarships are available.

SUMMARY:I AM – the sacred doorway of the Aramaic Heart of Jesus (in-person and online)
DESCRIPTION:The seven “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel reveal Jesus’ identity. Through Dr. Neil Douglas-Klotz’s heart-centered Aramaic lens\, they also illuminate our own identity and path to deeper Divine Presence. \nThis Christian contemplative day explores these sayings with a focus on Presence\, belonging\, and connection to God. We’ll engage through guided reflection\, chant\, embodied awareness\, and quiet prayer—listening for each phrase’s living resonance in an unhurried\, nurturing space. \nThis program will be offered both in-person and online via Zoom. Information on how to access the program on Zoom will be sent to participants in advance. \nThis program will include a morning and an afternoon session of Centering Prayer. \nAll are warmly welcome to rest\, receive\, and rediscover these timeless teachings. \nTimes listed below are in Eastern (New York) Time.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: Lectio Divina and the Four Senses of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:This “Praying Holy Scripture” retreat offers Centering Prayer periods plus presentations based upon Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings on the deepening levels of faith: the Four Senses of Scripture – literal\, allegorical\, behavioral/moral\, and unitive senses. The presentations teach a contemplative way of listening to and reading Scripture known as the ancient monastic practice of Lectio Divina. During the retreat\, one will experience the interplay of the silence of Centering Prayer and Praying Holy Scripture combined with the rhythm of this Episcopal Benedictine monastic community’s worship and prayer life including Holy Eucharist. This contemplative retreat welcomes those comfortable with silence and yearning to learn this ancient way of praying rather than studying Holy Scripture. \nCheck-in is from 2:00 to 5:00 pm Tuesday. Vespers begins at 5:00. Supper then follows. Orientation begins at 6:45 pm. The retreat concludes with noon meal on Friday. (Daily Holy Eucharist is available at 9:00 a.m.). \nThe suggested donation for the retreat is $445. The retreat fee includes a single room and all meals. Shared single occupancy bathrooms in the hallways. To register\, please contact our Guesthouse Office by phone at +1-845-384-6660\, ext. 3002 or email guesthouse@hcmnet.org. The guesthouse office is open from Tuesday till Friday. \nLeslee Anne Terpay: As a Contemplative Outreach Commissioned Presenter of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina\, Leslee shares Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings on the Christian Spiritual Journey to Love in workshop and retreat settings. She is part of the Service Teams that steward Fr. Thomas’s teaching for serving Intensive Retreats and Lectio Divina. She is a spiritual director in Lone Tree\, Colorado and a graduate of The Center for Action and Contemplation Living School.
