SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: An 11th-Step Practice - Introductory Workshop via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We have found Centering Prayer to be a meaningful method for our daily 11th-step meditation practice. To share this method with others in 12-step recovery\, we are offering this workshop to teach participants about the practice of Centering Prayer. We will also have a talk about the human condition\, which will help explain why we need a daily 11th-step practice. Times noted are in Central Time (Chicago). \nIn addition to the workshop on September 10th\, registration includes continuing sessions on the four Saturday mornings following the workshop. These optional sessions will each last for about an hour and will allow workshop participants to join us to: 1) practice Centering Prayer together\, 2) learn more about the prayer practice and 3) ask questions. These continuing session will be held September 17 and 24 and October 1 and 8 at 9AM Central Time.

SUMMARY:12-Step Introductory Workshop on Centering Prayer as 11th-Step Practice - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Centering Prayer as an 11th Step Practice Introductory Workshop and a presentation on The Human Condition \nWe have discovered that even when we live with great resolve\, determination\, and effort\, we cannot heal ourselves. Yes\, there are things we can do\, but we came to believe that healing is the work of our higher power. As we consent to God’s presence and action within us through the Centering Prayer practice\, we open ourselves to the exact healing we most need. \nFour continuing sessions also by Zoom Saturdays 9:00-10:00 am Central Time\nSeptember 17th\, 24th\, and October 1st\, and 8th

SUMMARY:How Contemplation Can Heal A Violent World
DESCRIPTION:In the 25th Anniversary celebration of Contemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington DC (COMW)\, the Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton\, Bishop of Maryland\, COMW co-founder\, will lead a full-day program on how contemplation is as relevant as ever in today’s world of violence at all levels of our lives\, both domestically and globally. Indeed\, Centering Prayer\, as one form of contemplation\, is a method for stilling our mind\, and in silence opening our hearts to peace and understanding\, thereby creating a foundation for a nonviolent response to any event that occurs in our lives.

SUMMARY:Praying with the Ear of our Heart-A Lectio Divina Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The focus of the retreat will be a Lectio Divina Introductory Workshop based on Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings of the Four Senses of Scripture. The experience of praying with Holy Scripture will be supported by Centering Prayer periods with ample time for personal reflection and/or exploring the many trails on the partially wooded 140 acres in the hills of Pennsylvania. \nLectio Divina reveals the four senses of Scripture-the literal\, the allegorical\, the moral/behavioral and the unitive in a Spirit-led\, transformative experience of relationship with the Divine. Come and let the Spirit speak to your heart as you “hear” scripture revealed through this ancient monastic prayer form. \nLed by: Elizabeth Graboski-a longtime contemplative prayer practitioner and a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina for Contemplative Outreach. Currently serves with Contemplative Outreach Central Pennsylvania local chapter for the Spiritual Enrichment and Formation for Facilitators of Centering Prayer Groups. \nBethany Retreat Center\n1031 Germania Rd\, Frenchville\, PA 16836 \nOffering: $397.00 (Cost includes accommodations\, all meals & retreat)\nDeposit: $75.00\nArrival: 3:00-5:00 on Wednesday\, September 7\, 2022\nDeparture: 12:00 pm on Saturday\, September 10\, 2022 \n*Commuter option available. SUMMARY:Entering the Mystical Mandala: Centering Oneself in the Sacred Circle
DESCRIPTION:This retreat will explore the universal symbol of the sacred circle known as the “mandala” and why we are naturally drawn to this sacred shape. Together we will experience how and why entering the process of creating and working with mandalas fosters physical\, psychological and spiritual grounding in our lives. Attendees will be invited to create four mandalas as part of the retreat. The retreat will include opportunities for art sharing where participants can process their experience in creating their mandala art. No previous art ability is needed to participate in this retreat. Everyone\, experienced artist or not\, will benefit from attending and creating. Basic art supplies will be offered to each participant\, but you are free to bring your own favorite art-making supplies as well. \nMandala creating and conferences will be surrounded by the gift of silence as well as regularly scheduled group Centering Prayer sessions. Do not be afraid to meet your spiritual inner artist. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Wisdom School: Three-Centered Presence & Transformation of Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:“From time immemorial Wisdom Schools have emerged in times of global crisis or on the cusp of great leaps in human consciousness in order to help shepherd our planet through the transition. While there is academic teaching that goes on here\, that is not the primary business of a Wisdom school; the primary business is to help anchor human wholeness and to work with the core practices that sustain the transformation of consciousness.”\n— Wisdom Waypoints \nWe are indeed in a time of global crisis and amidst a shift in our current structures of consciousness. Drawing on the work of Cynthia Bourgeault\, G.I. Gurdjieff\, Gebser\, and others\, this Wisdom School will focus on deepening presence in our three centers – intellectual\, emotional\, body – and how awakening in them can support us in the transformation of consciousness. We will also explore the practices of self-observation\, self-remembering\, conscious labor\, and intentional suffering as a way of participating in what is needed for the whole right now. \nJoin us in person at the Mercy Center in Burlingame. There will be an invitation to a ‘wisdom way of knowing’ through a daily rhythm with periods of silence\, centering prayer\, teaching\, conscious conversation\, Gurdjieff Exercises and Movements\, chanting\, mindful work\, lectio divina\, and contemplative free time. \nRecommended Reading: \n‘Wisdom Way of Knowing’ by Cynthia Bourgeault \n‘Seeing Through the World’ by Jeremy Johnson \nRetreat Leaders:\nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with training in a neurophysiology based approach to understanding the nervous system. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Christian Wisdom Tradition. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. These practices encourage us to lean into the Love that is constantly being offered within a relational web of Sacred Unity. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nCONTACT\nFor further assistance\, contact us at (650) 340-7474.\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org\nThese are unprecedented times. If finances are an issue\, please email us at registration@mercywmw.org for a learning grant discount code. We want to make sure our offerings are available to everyone.

SUMMARY:Eight-day Centering Prayer Post-Intensive Retreat: God Is Love
DESCRIPTION:God is Love: The Heart of All Creation builds on the works of Fr. Thomas Keating and is possibly his last major published series. As Fr. Thomas notes in the series: \n“Everything in the universe – everything our senses observe and technology uncovers at the highest level of infinitude is prophetic witness of the Divine. The Divine Presence is happening in\, through\, and amidst every detail of life… penetrates all that exists … is in relationship to every part of creation … is trying to move humanity to the next stage of consciousness.” \nDuring this Intensive Retreat\, viewing of the God Is Love video series will be in silence. The retreat experience offers several periods of Centering Prayer in community each day with time for rest\, reflection and enjoying the exquisite nature which envelopes the campus of St. Mary Monastery grounds. Meals are silent\, with the exception of conversation at the evening meal on opening night and at the last meal on the final day of the retreat. \nSusan Komis is the facilitator of the retreat and will be available for private walks and talks throughout the duration of the retreat. \nSee link below for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Intro to Centering Prayer Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Whether your interest is deepening your relationship with God\, relief from the stress of daily life\, or learning about contemplative prayer\, why not take some time this summer to learn and practice Centering Prayer? There will be plenty of time to rest and enjoy the beautiful contemplative oasis of St. Clare’s Retreat House in the Santa Cruz mountains. The intention for this weekend retreat is to refresh the spirit and deepen our commitment to a regular practice of Centering Prayer. Beginner and experienced Centering Prayer practitioners are welcome. \nCentering Prayer is a time-honored prayer practice in the Christian contemplative tradition that has helped men and women to prepare for\, receive\, and deepen the gift of contemplative prayer. People have been practicing Centering Prayer throughout the centuries\, but it is different from what we may think of as prayer. It is not the type of prayer we are used to\, like praying out loud or asking for something\, or even giving thanks. It is moving deep within ourselves\, in silence\, saying nothing\, asking nothing\, just intending to be in the Presence of God\, and allowing God to be with us. An introductory retreat offers instruction and practice on the method of Centering Prayer and discussion about its conceptual background. We will learn from experienced teaching\, DVD’s and group discussion. We will also enjoy Eucharist\, as well as pray the Liturgy of the Hours (Morning and Evening Prayer). \nYou may register using the link below.

SUMMARY:With Merton & Keating's Roadmap\, Where Do We Go from Here? - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a contemplative panel discussion with Ed Bacon\, Vernon Dixon\, Victor Kramer and David Rensberger. This inspiring event begins with a 20-minute Centering Prayer period. Then our panelists will share their thoughts on the timeless wisdom of Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating\, drawing from their research and experiences. The panel’s dialogue will answer our questions and unveil where Merton and Keating direct our spiritual path forward. \nMusical inspiration by Paul Reeves.\nModerated by Maggie Winfrey. \nOur Panelists: \nEd Bacon\nThomas Merton inspired Ed to become the Episcopal priest he has been for almost four decades: where he taught his central passion: that Jesus embodied a Love-based life as opposed to a fear-based ideology. He has served at Mercer University and in churches in California\, Mississippi\, and Georgia. Author of 8 Habits of Love\, he has been guest host for Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series\, where she named him “Soul Teacher” on her SuperSoul 100 List of voices elevating humanity. Ed serves on several boards\, including Sr. Ilia Delio’s Center for Christogenesis. He and his wife live in Birmingham near their grandchildren. His website is www.Edbacon.co. \nVictor Kramer\nA scholar of American Studies\, Victor is Professor Emeritus from Georgia State University. He has worked in religion and literature primarily researching Thomas Merton. He has written\, edited\, and compiled many books in extensive work with the International Thomas Merton Society. Victor edited Merton’s fourth volume of journals\, Turning toward the World; and wrote Thomas Merton\, Monk and Artist; as well as two oral histories about Merton and monasticism. He credits his wife Dewey for her invaluable\, astute help A certified spiritual director\, he gives retreats and days of reflection. He and his wife live in Decatur\, Georgia. \nVernon Dixon\nBorn 76 years ago and raised in Georgia\, Vernon counseled patients in his Christian Psychiatric practice for 38 years. After a blessed 7-day Centering Prayer retreat with Fr Thomas Keating\, he and his wife Mary Joyce began teaching Centering Prayer and Fr. Thomas’ wisdom to many. A commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer workshops\, he has facilitated two Centering Prayer groups for 20 years. He and Mary Joyce have led Intensive/Post-Intensive five-day Centering Prayer retreats at the Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers for 15 years. They presently reside in Hiawassee\, Georgia. \nDavid Rensberger\nDavid Rensberger grew up Mennonite in Indiana. Professor of New Testament at the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta for 30 years\, he continues to write and lead occasional workshops and retreats on the Bible and spirituality. Discovering mysticism in his late teens\, Christian mysticism shortly after that\, Thomas Merton 10 years later\, and Centering Prayer in his late 40s\, he is a vital member of the Atlanta chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society. David and his wife Sharon have two grown daughters and belong to Atlanta Mennonite Church and Oakhurst Baptist Church. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:“Unbinding Thomas Merton and Ourselves” - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:A Half-Day Retreat led by the Leslye Colvin\nVia Zoom \nDuring his apostolic visit to the United States in 2015\, Pope Francis described Thomas Merton as “a man of prayer\, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and for the Church.” This is beyond the man we know as a monk and writer\, or is it? \nThrough her research of Merton\, Leslye Colvin began to understand this description as she began to see him as model of the dynamic relationship between contemplation and activism that unbinds us to live the Gospel of Christ Jesus today – in our time and place. \nPonder with Leslye the connection between Merton’s activism and contemplation\, and its lessons for contemplatives today. \nAbout Leslye Colvin \nLeslye Colvin is a contemplative activist\, spiritual companion and writer. Inspired by the Catholic social justice tradition\, she is passionate about encouraging diversity of thought and has a wide range of experience in promoting mission and expanding outreach. She has been published by National Catholic Reporter\, and interviewed by America Magazine\, Radio Veritas\, U.S. Catholic\, and Vatican Radio on the construct of race. \nLeslye is the policy advocate for the National Advocacy Center of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. She is co-chair of the Board of Directors for NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice\, also serves on the Board of FutureChurch. She is a graduate of the Living School for Action and Contemplation\, and the Haden Institute. Her blog\, Leslye’s Labyrinth features writings from her African-American Catholic heart at bit.ly/leslyeslabyrinth. \nPlease see the link below to register. SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This silent/contemplative retreat is for those who wish to deepen their practice of Centering Prayer. The weekend will provide an opportunity to settle into silence and to engage God in a deeper way. Thomas Keating teaches that a regular practice of contemplative prayer prepares us to receive the grace of an ever-deepening connection to the Divine within us. On Saturday evening\, those who wish will have the opportunity to watch a segment featuring Fr. Thomas Keating: “The Mystery of God” from the DVD: The Gift of Life. As we emerge from our time of sheltering\, there is a yearning for communal silence. This weekend offers a community of support which can allow us a deeper space for God to speak and for us to listen. \nPrerequisite: A regular practice of Centering Prayer or Silent Meditation

SUMMARY:Practical Mysticism: Teachings from Evelyn Underhill - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:A Half-Day Retreat led by the Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor \n“God is the only reality\, and we are only real in so far as we are in God’s order and God is in us … So those who wonder where they are to begin might begin here\, by trying to give spiritual quality to every detail of their everyday lives.”\n– EVELYN UNDERHILL \nAs followers of Jesus\, how do we give spiritual quality to every detail of our everyday lives? In a time of conflict across the globe and COVID 19 and deep divisions in this country\, how do we discover and maintain our connection to the only reality? \nHowever\, our calling is not merely to be connected to God. Underhill wrote\, “We are transmitters as well as receivers.” She is calling for us to be “agents of the Creative Spirit in this world.” What does that look like in 2022 especially in the state of this country? \nThis event includes a time of Centering Prayer. \nAbout the Rt. Rev. Porter Taylor\nPorter Taylor is the retired Episcopal Bishop of Western North Carolina. Recently he has been a Visiting Bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. He holds a PhD in Literature and Theology from Emory University. He is the author of two books: From Anger to Zion: An Alphabet of Faith and To Dream As God Dreams: Sermons of Community\, Conversion\, and Hope. SUMMARY:The Way of the Heart: Mysticism Across Spiritual Traditions
DESCRIPTION:How do we awaken the heart and experience life through the heart center? For centuries\, Christian\, Sufi and Hindu mystics have been drawn to the heart as our primary source of spiritual perception and connection within wholeness and relationship. Matthew will weave together teaching and practice from different paths that focus on cultivating our hearts in relationship with the Divine Heart. \nPeriods of Centering Prayer are offered in the morning and afternoon.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer and Oneness
DESCRIPTION:“Contemplation…is not a special gift. It is simply seeing form the perspective of oneness\, or in other words\, from the level of our spiritual awareness. It can indeed be practiced\, and over time\, with sincerity and persistence\, it becomes an abiding state of consciousness.”\n― Cynthia Bourgeault\, in Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening \nOur contemplative practice opens up a new way of seeing and being\, acknowledging our oneness with each other\, with the world\, and with God. As we consent to the Spirit\, we consent to the help that is always being offered to us and to our world. \nOur Centering Prayer is an important foundation in this\, and yet it doesn’t end when we get up off the cushion. In all of the times of our day we can continue to offer ourselves to Sacred Unity. Throughout our activity\, and in the evening and at night – we are continually a part of this Oneness. \nJoin us as we offer our beloved being up to God\, sitting together in the quiet\, moving throughout our day\, and entering the evening and night in prayer together. This retreat is suitable for people with a long-time practice of Centering Prayer\, and will also provide guidance for those relatively new to it. We are planning a spacious schedule blanketed in sacred silence so that you will have time to walk the beautiful Mercy grounds\, and to do other deeply relaxing practices that we’ll talk about. Bring a journal and pen if you like. There is a lovely craft room at Mercy Center but bring additional art supplies if you prefer. \nRecommended reading (we will be presenting material from this book):\nCentering Prayer and Inner Awakening by Cynthia Bourgeault \nRetreat Leaders:\nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. \nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with a background as a therapist and training in a neurophysiology based approach to trauma resolution. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Wisdom Tradition. \nLink to COVID Protocol: https://mercy-center.org/guest-protocol/\nContact Us: 650-340-7474\nMC@sistersofmercy.org\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org\nThese are unprecedented times. If finances are an issue\, please email us at registration@mercywmw.org for a learning grant discount code. We want to make sure our offerings are available to everyone
