SUMMARY:With Merton & Keating's Roadmap\, Where Do We Go from Here? - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a contemplative panel discussion with Ed Bacon\, Vernon Dixon\, Victor Kramer and David Rensberger. This inspiring event begins with a 20-minute Centering Prayer period. Then our panelists will share their thoughts on the timeless wisdom of Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating\, drawing from their research and experiences. The panel’s dialogue will answer our questions and unveil where Merton and Keating direct our spiritual path forward. \nMusical inspiration by Paul Reeves.\nModerated by Maggie Winfrey. \nOur Panelists: \nEd Bacon\nThomas Merton inspired Ed to become the Episcopal priest he has been for almost four decades: where he taught his central passion: that Jesus embodied a Love-based life as opposed to a fear-based ideology. He has served at Mercer University and in churches in California\, Mississippi\, and Georgia. Author of 8 Habits of Love\, he has been guest host for Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series\, where she named him “Soul Teacher” on her SuperSoul 100 List of voices elevating humanity. Ed serves on several boards\, including Sr. Ilia Delio’s Center for Christogenesis. He and his wife live in Birmingham near their grandchildren. His website is www.Edbacon.co. \nVictor Kramer\nA scholar of American Studies\, Victor is Professor Emeritus from Georgia State University. He has worked in religion and literature primarily researching Thomas Merton. He has written\, edited\, and compiled many books in extensive work with the International Thomas Merton Society. Victor edited Merton’s fourth volume of journals\, Turning toward the World; and wrote Thomas Merton\, Monk and Artist; as well as two oral histories about Merton and monasticism. He credits his wife Dewey for her invaluable\, astute help A certified spiritual director\, he gives retreats and days of reflection. He and his wife live in Decatur\, Georgia. \nVernon Dixon\nBorn 76 years ago and raised in Georgia\, Vernon counseled patients in his Christian Psychiatric practice for 38 years. After a blessed 7-day Centering Prayer retreat with Fr Thomas Keating\, he and his wife Mary Joyce began teaching Centering Prayer and Fr. Thomas’ wisdom to many. A commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer workshops\, he has facilitated two Centering Prayer groups for 20 years. He and Mary Joyce have led Intensive/Post-Intensive five-day Centering Prayer retreats at the Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers for 15 years. They presently reside in Hiawassee\, Georgia. \nDavid Rensberger\nDavid Rensberger grew up Mennonite in Indiana. Professor of New Testament at the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta for 30 years\, he continues to write and lead occasional workshops and retreats on the Bible and spirituality. Discovering mysticism in his late teens\, Christian mysticism shortly after that\, Thomas Merton 10 years later\, and Centering Prayer in his late 40s\, he is a vital member of the Atlanta chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society. David and his wife Sharon have two grown daughters and belong to Atlanta Mennonite Church and Oakhurst Baptist Church. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:“Unbinding Thomas Merton and Ourselves” - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:A Half-Day Retreat led by the Leslye Colvin\nVia Zoom \nDuring his apostolic visit to the United States in 2015\, Pope Francis described Thomas Merton as “a man of prayer\, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and for the Church.” This is beyond the man we know as a monk and writer\, or is it? \nThrough her research of Merton\, Leslye Colvin began to understand this description as she began to see him as model of the dynamic relationship between contemplation and activism that unbinds us to live the Gospel of Christ Jesus today – in our time and place. \nPonder with Leslye the connection between Merton’s activism and contemplation\, and its lessons for contemplatives today. \nAbout Leslye Colvin \nLeslye Colvin is a contemplative activist\, spiritual companion and writer. Inspired by the Catholic social justice tradition\, she is passionate about encouraging diversity of thought and has a wide range of experience in promoting mission and expanding outreach. She has been published by National Catholic Reporter\, and interviewed by America Magazine\, Radio Veritas\, U.S. Catholic\, and Vatican Radio on the construct of race. \nLeslye is the policy advocate for the National Advocacy Center of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. She is co-chair of the Board of Directors for NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice\, also serves on the Board of FutureChurch. She is a graduate of the Living School for Action and Contemplation\, and the Haden Institute. Her blog\, Leslye’s Labyrinth features writings from her African-American Catholic heart at bit.ly/leslyeslabyrinth. \nPlease see the link below to register. Times listed are Eastern Time Zone (New York)

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This silent/contemplative retreat is for those who wish to deepen their practice of Centering Prayer. The weekend will provide an opportunity to settle into silence and to engage God in a deeper way. Thomas Keating teaches that a regular practice of contemplative prayer prepares us to receive the grace of an ever-deepening connection to the Divine within us. On Saturday evening\, those who wish will have the opportunity to watch a segment featuring Fr. Thomas Keating: “The Mystery of God” from the DVD: The Gift of Life. As we emerge from our time of sheltering\, there is a yearning for communal silence. This weekend offers a community of support which can allow us a deeper space for God to speak and for us to listen. \nPrerequisite: A regular practice of Centering Prayer or Silent Meditation

Porter Taylor \n“God is the only reality\, and we are only real in so far as we are in God’s order and God is in us … So those who wonder where they are to begin might begin here\, by trying to give spiritual quality to every detail of their everyday lives.”\n– EVELYN UNDERHILL \nAs followers of Jesus\, how do we give spiritual quality to every detail of our everyday lives? In a time of conflict across the globe and COVID 19 and deep divisions in this country\, how do we discover and maintain our connection to the only reality? \nHowever\, our calling is not merely to be connected to God. Underhill wrote\, “We are transmitters as well as receivers.” She is calling for us to be “agents of the Creative Spirit in this world.” What does that look like in 2022 especially in the state of this country? \nThis event includes a time of Centering Prayer. \nAbout the Rt. Rev. Porter Taylor\nPorter Taylor is the retired Episcopal Bishop of Western North Carolina. Recently he has been a Visiting Bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. He holds a PhD in Literature and Theology from Emory University. He is the author of two books: From Anger to Zion: An Alphabet of Faith and To Dream As God Dreams: Sermons of Community\, Conversion\, and Hope. His home is in Asheville\, NC. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:The Way of the Heart: Mysticism Across Spiritual Traditions
DESCRIPTION:How do we awaken the heart and experience life through the heart center? For centuries\, Christian\, Sufi and Hindu mystics have been drawn to the heart as our primary source of spiritual perception and connection within wholeness and relationship. Matthew will weave together teaching and practice from different paths that focus on cultivating our hearts in relationship with the Divine Heart. \nPeriods of Centering Prayer are offered in the morning and afternoon.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer and Oneness
DESCRIPTION:“Contemplation…is not a special gift. It is simply seeing form the perspective of oneness\, or in other words\, from the level of our spiritual awareness. It can indeed be practiced\, and over time\, with sincerity and persistence\, it becomes an abiding state of consciousness.”\n― Cynthia Bourgeault\, in Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening \nOur contemplative practice opens up a new way of seeing and being\, acknowledging our oneness with each other\, with the world\, and with God. As we consent to the Spirit\, we consent to the help that is always being offered to us and to our world. \nOur Centering Prayer is an important foundation in this\, and yet it doesn’t end when we get up off the cushion. In all of the times of our day we can continue to offer ourselves to Sacred Unity. Throughout our activity\, and in the evening and at night – we are continually a part of this Oneness. \nJoin us as we offer our beloved being up to God\, sitting together in the quiet\, moving throughout our day\, and entering the evening and night in prayer together. This retreat is suitable for people with a long-time practice of Centering Prayer\, and will also provide guidance for those relatively new to it. We are planning a spacious schedule blanketed in sacred silence so that you will have time to walk the beautiful Mercy grounds\, and to do other deeply relaxing practices that we’ll talk about. Bring a journal and pen if you like. There is a lovely craft room at Mercy Center but bring additional art supplies if you prefer. \nRecommended reading (we will be presenting material from this book):\nCentering Prayer and Inner Awakening by Cynthia Bourgeault \nRetreat Leaders:\nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director whose offerings include Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices of the Christian Wisdom tradition. These practices encourage us to lean into the Love that is constantly being offered within a relational web of Sacred Unity. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nCatherine Regan\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, retired psychologist\, and adjunct staff member at Mercy Center\, primarily serving on the Centering Prayer team. She has a special interest in participating in the reclamation of the Christian Wisdom tradition and fostering the contemplative practices so urgently needed at this time in our world. \nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with a background as a therapist and training in a neurophysiology based approach to trauma resolution. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Wisdom Tradition. \nLink to COVID Protocol: https://mercy-center.org/guest-protocol/\nContact Us: 650-340-7474\nMC@sistersofmercy.org\nFor more information visit: www.mercy-center.org\nThese are unprecedented times. SUMMARY:Mystic Series: Gift of Tears
DESCRIPTION:In-person and via Zoom at the Center for Contemplative Living in Elm Grove\, Wisconsin\, USA \nIn ancient times contemplatives aspired to the Gift of Tears. Here and there it is treasured even today. Mingled perhaps with some ambivalence. We will touch on several perspectives of the nature of this delicate Gift: historical\, contemporary\, psychological\, and spiritual. We’ll also look at the different types and purposes of tears\, how the Gift manifests\, and key figures who’ve had the Gift of Tears. \nThe evening will begin with a 20-minute Centering Prayer sit\, followed by the presentation\, and time for Q&A and reflective discussion.  If you have not had previous exposure to Centering Prayer\, please let us know beforehand and we will arrange to give you a brief explanation of the method a few minutes before the event begins. \nPRESENTER: Debbie Harmon has practiced Centering Prayer for over 30 years. Since the 1990s\, she has been involved with Contemplative Outreach in the Midwest\, spoken on a variety of spiritual topics\, facilitated groups and retreats\, and been a commissioned presenter of the Introductory Centering Prayer Workshop. Debbie is a spiritual director and holds a Master of Divinity and Master’s in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Chicago. \nDonations up to $20 are welcome. SUMMARY:Notes of Rest - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Contemplative Outreach of Chicago \nNotes of Rest is a musical-textual retreat\, which places meditations from a Bible passage and writings from Black contemplatives on a bed of music\, cultivating stillness\, introspection\, and creativity in communities so that all may find rest. The approach may be thought of as a kind of “Musica Divina\,” which uses the beauty and spiritual power of music to help workshop participants find their way to a quiet\, reflective interior space where we can be fully receptive to grace\, or what Thomas Keating described as “God’s presence and action within.” The event will start with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer prior to the 90-minute Notes of Rest workshop. Then there will be a half-hour break\, followed by an optional lecture on music and Black contemplative life and their unique contributions to Christian mysticism. \nPlease see the link below to register.

SUMMARY:Sister Kathleen Deignan\, CND ”Thomas Merton: Guide Through the Dark Night of Earth” – via zoom
DESCRIPTION:Among the great luminaries of the Christian spiritual tradition\, the modern master\, Thomas Merton\, shines a penetrating light upon our challenging lives and times. More than half a century after his death\, Merton grows in stature and relevance as a pattern of integral ecological consciousness becomes evident throughout his written corpus as its complexity and unity become more transparent with time. As the contemporary ecological crisis deepens\, we urgently require more than instrumental remedies to stem the life-loss of our ecosphere suffered at human hands. We need a penetrating understanding of the more troubling and mysterious pathology underlying it: why\, indeed\, have we plundered our planetary paradise? \nThis was the difficult “koan” Merton carried to fruition as he explored the congenital disorientation of spirit that exiles us from our common home in the community of creation. Having suffered such exile\, he recovered from it\, and taught a holistic therapy of contemplative living that can restore our ecological consciousness\, conscience\, and practice. This program will explore Merton’s wisdom for the Dark Night of Earth. \nThis event will include 20 minutes of Centering Prayer. \nTime listed is Mountain Time. \nClick the Link Below for Registration Information

SUMMARY:Grounding the Prayer of the Cloud with the Prayer of the Heart
DESCRIPTION:An e-Introduction to Heart Intention for Centering Prayer Practitioners \n with David Frenette \n Tuesday May 3 – Sunday May 22\, 2022 \nFree; suggested donation $45 USD \nThe world is rapidly changing.  Heart Intention is a contemplative practice that\, with Centering Prayer\, helps us respond to the new challenges we are facing. In Centering Prayer and Heart Intention\, two great streams of Christian contemplation – the Prayer of the Cloud and the Prayer of the Heart – meet\, in service of an integrative approach to meditation. \nJoin us in learning Heart Intention\, a contemplative practice that: \n*  lets intention and meaning flow into our lives; \n*  integrates the receptive simplicity of Centering Prayer with a nuanced practice that is embodied\, engaged\, and that embraces our humanity; \n*  helps us act in our challenging world from a heart more present to God. \nThis three-week online class includes three new recorded video teachings\, three live Zoom practice sessions with time for Q/A with David\, and access to written resources. This course is for anyone looking for ways to meaningfully integrate their Centering Prayer practice into daily activity and contemplative service. \nOne email will be sent each Tuesday with a link to the recorded video\, and live practice sessions with be on Sunday.  The practice sessions will be at noon Pacific Time\, UTC -7 (3pm Eastern Time\, 8pm London Time). These sessions will be recorded for those that cannot attend.

SUMMARY:Presence\, Prayer and Writing from the Heart Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them.\nIf a story comes to you\, care for them.\nAnd learn to give them away where they are needed.\nSometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.”\n– Barry Lopez in Crow and Weasel \nAll of us have myriad stories to tell. Some involve your family history\, spiritual journey\, experiences in Nature or a life-changing situation. Stories can take many form — memoir\, essay\, poem\, series of blog posts\, or journal entries — but the most compelling are the ones written from the heart\, those that touch and move us and sometimes even transform both the writer and reader. Writing from the heart demands attentiveness\, honesty\, courage and a commitment to engage with a creative process that pulls us into the unknown where we are often surprised at what surfaces. It’s a journey of discovery. And what can help are presence and prayer. \nThis writing retreat is structured for those currently working on a project\, those who want to start one\, or simply desire to spend time in beautiful surroundings playing with words. In addition to Centering Prayer sessions — silence can be a portal to the Source of creativity and truth-telling — there will be ample opportunities to write\, walk\, think and just be. \nAnne A. Simpkinson is an award-winning journalist\, editor and writing coach. She and her former husband Chuck founded Common Boundary\, a nonprofit organization that explored the relationship among psychotherapy\, spirituality and creativity. She co-authored Soul Work: A Field Guide for Spiritual Seekers and two anthologies\, Sacred Stories and Nourishing the Soul. When living in New York City\, she rode the media transformation from websites to digital communications in her positions with Beliefnet.com\, Prevention magazine\, WeightWatchers.com and Guideposts. She also served as Communications Director for Mercy by the Sea for several years. Anne has been practicing Centering Prayer (CP) since 1996. An Introductory CP Workshop facilitator\, she leads retreats\, workshops and Quiet Days in New York\, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Along with Claire Rusowicz\, she co-facilitates two weekly Centering Prayer Zoom groups as well as day and weekend retreats.
