SUMMARY:Releasing an Enslaved Spirit – A Workshop on Communal Contemplative Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Very Rev. Michael Battle\, Ph.D.\nCo-sponsored by Contemplative Outreach Chicago and Contemplative Outreach Atlanta \n9 AM to Noon Central Time Zone\n10 AM to 1 PM Eastern Time Zone \nMichael Battle points out something we all may have noticed: that events and organizations working to encourage Christian spirituality and contemplative life seem to attract a certain demographic\, predominantly white and westernized. Those who look\, act\, and seem different from this demographic often find no access point. Publishers\, spiritual leaders\, and socially conscious folks are deeply aware of this binding apart and often grieve the fact that many Christians do not pray together \nIn this workshop\, it is our hope to bring together people from diverse backgrounds who share an interest in contemplation. Together we will pray through\, think about and practice how to be more communally diverse in Contemplative Spirituality — how to release the natural unity the Holy Spirit constantly offers the world. \nProviding an indication of where the workshop will take us\, Rev. Battle quotes St. John of the Cross: \n“The soul that is attached to anything however much good there may be in it\, will not arrive at the liberty of divine union. For whether it be a strong wire rope or a slender and delicate thread that holds the bird\, it matters not\, if it really holds it fast\, For\, until the cord be broken the bird cannot fly.”\n– Ascent of Mt. Carmel\, Book One\, 11 \nThe workshop will begin with a 20-30 minute contemplative experience led by Contemplative Outreach. This will include Centering Prayer as well as a brief guided meditation to expand our experience and open our hearts. \nThen\, building on St. John’s powerful insight\, Rev. Battle will lead an interactive and deeply spiritual workshop incorporating presentations\, art\, music\, and pauses for reflection. The intention is to uncover\, describe and practice approaches that can help us begin to “break the cord\,” removing constraints and divisions within our own individual hearts and across the wider contemplative movement. There will be pauses for silence\, small group sharing\, and discernment about what God may be inviting our community into with regard to spiritual/racial union. \nIn Centering Prayer and other contemplative practices\, we find a path that opens us up to oneness\, while the racial divide denies this reality\, insisting instead on the “otherness” of those who may be different from us in appearance or culture. As we open to a greater and more connected state of awareness\, it is essential to do so communally\, rather than just individually — to share our being more openly with others\, including others of different backgrounds. \nWe invite you to join us on this sacred journey toward Communal Contemplative Spirituality. SUMMARY:Icons as Portals for Unlocking the Contemplative Heart via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mary Atalo\, a half-day retreat sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Maryland and Washington. \nIcons\, as opposed to paintings\, are considered as “writings of the heart” which open the contemplative to “Behold” the Glory of the Lord. Many paintings can aid in our “seeing\,” but icons allow us to “behold.” In our contemplative prayer\, first through a silent “gazing” at the image in Visio Divina\, another realm begins to appear which lures us to step beyond the gaze into the ineffable realm of the Divine\, where “Beholding” is the work of silence.” This “Beholding” transfigures the way we see the world\, how we act in it\, and conveys the great hope of God’s enduring love and wisdom as promised in the Covenant of Peace. \nIn this mini retreat\, we will practice contemplative “Beholding” through Visio Divina of icons from the ancient Orthodox Akathistos Hymn\, The O Antiphons\, The Litany of Loretto\, and the Old Testament Wisdom Books. We shall see that there are really two Christmas stories of Incarnation occurring during this season: one occurring in time and space as the incarnation of Christ; another occurring in eternity\, as the incarnation of the Divine. We will follow the Contemplative Outreach guidelines for Visio Divina. \nRev. Dr. Mary Atalo is an Archpriest of the Wisdom tradition in the independent Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch\, and Associate Dean of Sophia Divinity School\, the Church’s distant learning Seminary. She is the rector of a newly formed church\, “Our Lady of the Bridge” in Union Bridge\, MD\, a sacramental and contemplative community in the Christian mystical tradition. She had a former 30-year career as an oceanographer\, and seeks to bridge science and religion. In 2020\, she led the COMW Advent mini-retreat\, and has been an advocate of the contemplative prayer practices of Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. William Meninger in daily life.

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: Lectio Divina and the Four Senses of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:This Praying Holy Scripture in-person retreat at Holy Cross Monastery in the Hudson Valley\, NY offers Centering Prayer periods plus presentations based upon Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings on the deepening levels of faith: the Four Senses of Scripture – literal\, allegorical\, behavioral/moral\, and unitive senses. The presentations teach a contemplative way of listening to and reading Scripture known as the ancient monastic practice of Lectio Divina. We will experience scripture by praying different translations of Mary’s hymn of praise: the Magnificat. During the retreat\, one will experience the interplay of the silence of Centering Prayer and Praying Holy Scripture combined with the rhythm of this Episcopal Benedictine monastic community’s worship and prayer life including Holy Eucharist. This contemplative retreat welcomes those comfortable with silence and yearning to learn this ancient way of praying rather than studying Holy Scripture. \nCheck-in is from 2:00 to 5:00 pm Tuesday\, December 14. Vespers begins at 5:00. Dinner then follows. Orientation begins at 7:15pm. The retreat concludes with noon meal Friday\, December 17. Suggested donation for the retreat is $385 (including a non-refundable deposit). The retreat fee includes a single room and all meals. Shared single occupancy bathrooms in the hallways. The Guest House requires all guests to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and the wearing of face masks during group gatherings. \nRegister with our Guesthouse Manager\, Donna Mallory at 845-384-6660 ext 3002 or at guesthouse@hcmnet.org. If you have questions about the content of the retreat please contact the retreat leader: Leslee Terpay at co-leslee@comcast.net. \nOur Retreat Leader — Leslee Anne Terpay: As a Contemplative Outreach Commissioned Presenter of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina\, Leslee shares Fr. Thomas Keating’s teachings on the Christian Spiritual Journey to Love in workshop and retreat settings. She is part of the Service Teams that steward Fr. Thomas’s teaching for serving Intensive Retreats and Lectio Divina. She is a spiritual director in Lone Tree\, CO and a graduate of The Center for Action and Contemplation Living School.

SUMMARY:John of the Cross & The Song of Songs: Mysticism\, Eroticism\, and Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:In these sessions\, Netanel Miles-Yépez (who shares the same surname as his subject\, Juan de Yépes) will discuss how the Spanish saint\, better known as John of the Cross\, gives instruction in contemplative prayer in terms that seem strikingly similar to Centering Prayer\, and uses the erotic imagery of the Song of Songs to describe the mystical experiences which often follow such prayer. Using translations of the Song of Songs and John of the Cross from Miles-Yépez’s own book\, My Love Stands Behind a Wall: A Translation of the Song of Songs and Other Poems\, he will lead us through the mystical landscape of the great poet and saint\, and lead Centering Prayer for us from John’s teachings in The Living Flame of Love. \nPlease register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina Workshop: In Person or Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 4\, 2021 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm\nIn Person at the Center for Contemplative Living\, Elm Grove\, WI or Via ZOOM \nRegister for $20 or for FREE on the website\, and a Zoom link will be emailed with your registration confirmation. Please see the link below to register. \n“Praying the Scriptures” or Lectio Divina (the divine word of God) is a contemplative tradition taught in the monastic vs. scholastic style of hearing the living Word of God in the sacred spaces of everyday life. This workshop\, presented by Sr. Kathryn Ann Kobelinski\, SSND\, and Jill Nowlen\, MASFD\, both commissioned presenters of the prayer\, will share the method of this heart-to-heart conversation with God\, while reading\, reflecting\, responding\, and resting in the words of Scripture. Even if you practice Lectio\, you will find this workshop will deepen the practice and will bring the scripture texts into your every day life. This is not a scripture study. It is a way to allow God to have a conversation with you and to give you a gift of understanding. Many Centering Prayer groups find it helpful to practice Lectio Divina with the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday liturgies after their Centering Prayer time. For planning purposes\, please register so that we have space for everyone. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Leaning Into Blessing: A Silent Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Mercy Center Centering Prayer Program presents: \nLeaning Into Blessing:\nAn Advent Silent Retreat \nDecember 3-5\, 2021 Starts 4 pm Friday and ends 12 pm Sunday (lunch provided afterwards) on site at Mercy Center in Burlingame\, CA.\nRegistration: $300 (includes retreat\, accommodations\, and meals) \n“The season of Advent means there is something on the horizon the likes of which we have never seen before…So stay. Sit. Linger. Tarry. Ponder. Wait. Behold. Wonder. There will be time enough for running. For rushing. For worrying. For pushing. For now\, stay. Wait. Something is on the horizon.” ―Jan L. Richardson \nAdvent is a season rich with anticipation as we prepare to honor the incarnation of the person of Jesus: he revealed to the world a life rooted in the heart\, at the intersection of time and timelessness. Alongside Mary\, pregnant with the Christ\, we enter the dark and soft stillness of winter; ripening with the blessing of generating the Christ in our own embodied lives. As we lean into the blessing\, cultivating our own deep “yes” parallel to Mary’s\, we have the opportunity to carry forth tending to the horizontal demands of the season from a profound fullness. Slowing and staying awake to the true meaning of this season\, we break the habitual excess of commercial consumerism\, instead offering the fruits of our awakened hearts. \nJoin us as we lean into the blessing\, sitting and lingering in the quiet\, readying our hearts to enter Christmas with humility\, compassion\, and great love; that we may offer what is needed. \nRetreat Leaders: \nHeather Ruce\, M.A. is a wisdom spiritual director with a background as a therapist and training in a neurophysiology based approach to trauma resolution. She loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats focused on learning and practicing the Wisdom Tradition. \nJoy Andrews Hayter\, Ph.D. is a spiritual director\, and Centering Prayer coordinator at Mercy Center. Joy is dedicated to fostering contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer and others within the Christian Wisdom tradition that help us become aware of God’s ever-present love. As a scientist she sees in the physical world an expression of that love. \nPlease register at www.mercy-center.org or telephone 650-340-7474 \nWe are planning a spacious schedule so that you will have time to walk the beautiful Mercy grounds\, and to do other deeply relaxing practices that we’ll talk about. Bring a journal and pen if you like. There is a lovely craft room at Mercy Center but bring additional art supplies if you prefer. \nCOVID Protocol is still in place at Mercy Center\, and everyone entering the building must be fully vaccinated\, and wear masks in all common areas indoors except when eating. For this reason\, it is important to also include the following in your packing:\n1) A record of having been vaccinated\n2) At least one mask\n3) Hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer is provided by the Center\, but it helps if you will also bring your own.\nFor more information about Mercy Center’s COVID protocols\, please click on the link below.\nGuest Protocol – Mercy Center Burlingame (mercy-center.org)

SUMMARY:Advent Retreat: Incarnation as Practice - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This online retreat is an entry into an intentional Advent where we are invited to pause\, listen\, reflect\, and be renewed in our relationship with the Indwelling Presence through prayerful\, silence\, solitude and community. \nDuring this three-day retreat\, we will practice Incarnation through intentional silence\, solitude\, listening\, resting and stillness. This retreat is about spaciousness – giving ourselves over to extended\, open time just to be with God in prayer\, in nature\, in walking\, music\, reading and the silent company of others on retreat. It is an invitation to lay down our ordinary life to experience the extraordinary right-now presence of God during this sacred time of the year. The retreat will include periods of Centering Prayer\, music as a vestibule to prayer\, simple prayerful gestures\, Lectio Divina\, optional soul-friending and lots of open time offline for reflection\, resting\, journaling\, art-making or whatever stimulates your child-like wonder. \nThe retreat will be facilitated by Pamela Begeman. Pamela is a commissioned presenter of both Centering Prayer and the Welcoming Prayer. She co-creates and facilitates many of the Contemplative Outreach worldwide online retreats\, programs and publications. She is also one of the creators and editors of The Contemplative Life Program\, a series of 40-day booklets on contemplative practices and dispositions. Her daily spiritual practices root her in the present and Presence while being an active wife\, mother and professional. Pamela coordinates communications\, technology and programs for the international office of Contemplative Outreach and lives in Austin\, Texas. She also serves on the steering committee of The Meditation Chapel\, a Zoom-enabled worldwide prayer chapel for people of all practices and spiritual traditions. \nThe retreat is free\, with a suggested donation of $40.  Please register using the link below.

SUMMARY:The Dynamic Center of Being: Awakening to Unity through Centering Prayer with David Frenette via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:11am – 1pm Pacific Time (noon Mountain; 1pm Central; 2pm Eastern; 7pm London (BST); UTC 19:00)\nFree; suggested donation $35 USD \nMany of us struggle these days with fear\, outrage and uncertainty in the face of personal and global change\, loss and collapse. All these struggles share a single root: a sense of separation — from ourselves\, from one another\, and from God. And yet we know in our heart of hearts\, and have experienced in deep contemplative practice\, that everything is unified in God\, the timeless reality in which we live and move and have our being. \nThis online workshop will explore Centering Prayer as a way to align us and our actions with unity\, according to Jesus’ teachings. David will share stories\, teachings and guided meditations to renew our experience of unity\, opening us to presence\, connection and love\, the source of contemplative service in the world. We will also have time for small group sharing\, and a period of Centering Prayer. \nAbout David Frenette:\nDavid Frenette\, author of The Path of Centering Prayer: Deepening Your Experience of God (Sounds True 2012)\, is a contemplative spiritual director\, mentor for other spiritual directors\, and spiritual writer. He co-created and co-led a contemplative retreat community where he lived as a monk for 10 years. He has an MA in transpersonal counseling psychology\, has been a trustee of Contemplative Outreach (the international Centering Prayer organization)\, an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University\, a founding member of Integral Spirituality\, and a teacher at leading retreat centers across the country. From 1983 until his death in 2018\, David’s spiritual father was the Trappist monk and founder of Centering Prayer\, Father Thomas Keating. SUMMARY:Deepening Spiritual Practice through Three-Centered Awareness - Online
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Phileena Heuertz of the Gravity Center\nSponsored by Contemplative Outreach Chicago \nThree-centered awareness is crucial for experiencing Divine Presence; mind\, heart\, and body coming online and cooperating together. But too often\, we experience shut-down in one or more of these centers. This limits our capacity for opening to Presence and receiving the integration and wholeness for which we long. \nAre you curious about the deeper\, subtle\, life-changing dynamics of contemplative prayer? Do you feel stuck in your practice and desire to progress? Are you wondering how to more regularly bring the gifts of your sitting practice into your daily experiences of life and relationships? \nIf so\, join Phileena Heuertz for this 3 hour online contemplative experience. During our time together\, Phileena will offer a mix of foundational teaching\, guided group contemplation\, and three-centered awareness practice. \nNote: All times are in Central Time Zone.

SUMMARY:Praying with Jesus - Online
DESCRIPTION:The Mercy Center Centering Prayer Program presents:\nPraying with Jesus \nONLINE Saturday November 6\, 2021\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM USA Pacific Time \nThe prayer that is commonly known as The Lord’s Prayer is one that many of us know by heart. But there is more power and depth to this prayer when it is approached from its Aramaic roots. This day of prayer will draw upon the work of Neil Douglas-Klotz to help us experience a deeper power in the words of Jesus — words that draw us into the heart of Jesus\, the heart of all creation. \nPlease register using the link below. \nRetreat Leader: Henry Schoenfield\, MDiv is a spiritual director\, UCC pastor\, and certified professional coach. As a spiritual seeker\, he draws from different spiritual traditions while being firmly rooted in the Contemplative Christian path. He loves working with individuals and groups as they discover more deeply how God is loving them and leading them to live out God’s love in the world.
