It wasn’t until the early 2000s that I learned about centering prayer. Prior to that in the 1980s I spent time at Holden Village, the Lutheran retreat center in Washington state where I Wanted to learn more about And practice contemplative prayer. I learned about the Jesus prayer. I struggled in the 90s to find a “form” of quiet prayer that would stick. I walked labyrinths. Eventually I spent a private retreat at St Meinrads, then Sisters of St Benedict of Ferdinand in Southern Indiana... Read more
On my way to discovering my "true self," a wonderful professor of mine from Kent State University, Jeff Wattles, recommended that I take a look at the Contemplative Outreach site on my computer. Father Thomas Keating helped me find my place on a once very crooked road of life. "Open Heart Open Mind, " opened the door to a soul that had been hidden from me for many years (looking deeper and deeper into my soul) as Padre Pio wrote . Having been severely mentally ill, since 8th grade grammar sch... Read more
Liberty, South Carolina Father Thomas began to influence my life in 2001 when I wrote to him about my difficulties in reconciling the Christian religion with the perspectives that arose from the philosophy and experiences of nondualism. With his usual grace and candor, he was able to address my every question and it became very apparent that he was comfortable conversing at every level and had clearly experienced and explored the subtlest and most profound levels of consciousness. Over... Read more
I am grateful to Fr Thomas Keating! He was so loving and wise, so authentic, a lover of God and man, a beloved teacher and spiritual director to so many... I still have so much to learn from him and I’m just so grateful that he wrote so many books and allowed us to capture him on film. He has left quite a legacy! Thank you Fr Thomas Keating!!! Pray for us!
Thomas Keating's book Open Mind, Open Heart, has been an answer to what I had been searching for spiritually. Through Centering Prayer that I have been practicing for 6 years, I have learned to experience God at a deeper level. This truly has transformed my life, with more and more peace, clarity and a greater sense of being connected to others. Fr. Keating will be remembered as an influential spiritual teacher and director with a particular graceful personality and an amazing sense of humor.... Read more
Great and beloved master. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Although I've kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, I find it difficult to express my deepest gratitude, my unabashed love and the innermost depths of my heart on the occasion of Blessed Thomas Keating's entrance into Life Eternal. I have never met him personally but the transmission of his Light, of his Presence, of his humility, of his Spiritual Authority over the years through the videos has been great. I feel he knows me, somehow! I 'know' him! I first listened to The Contemplative Journ... Read more
All of Heaven has joyfully greeted a new Saint on 10/25/2018. We love you and are in deep gratitude Dear Fr. Thomas for your many gifts to us. You have surely touched, and will continue to touch, the hearts of so many souls with your inspiration, your deep wisdom, your role-modeling, your humbleness, your gentleness, and mostly your powerful love you have chosen to share with our world. You accomplished much as you lived your calling and made us all better persons, individually and collectively,... Read more
Meeting Father Thomas was, for me, sheer delight and somewhat discombobulating. He'd come to give a retreat in northern Kentucky maybe ten years ago, and the night before, we three Centering Prayer friends caravanned from Louisville to stay at the retreat house. Later that night we crept quietly down to the bottom of the stairs, in our PJ's, as he was speaking to a fund-raising dinner at the end of the hallway. We clutched each other with glee like children catching Santa Claus, peering through ... Read more
I only recently met Father Thomas Keating in the past year - year and a half maybe - of my life. I say met, but really I saw Rising Tide of Silence and that's how I came to know him. But, he changed me - he changed my life. After I saw that documentary and saw Christ and God through his beautiful lens, I felt something I had never felt before. I laid down on my bed and felt God hug me. It was amazing. It lasted only a few minutes but the sense of peace and deep joy was indescribable. It has stay... Read more
