God Wants Us

A weekly message from Fr. Thomas Keating on Awakening to the Contemplative Dimension of Life

English Transcript

God is prepared and has thrown away
his own dignity and honor, peer group
– whatever that might be in this case –
in order to become one with the dregs of humanity
so that all can be saved.
This is God’s way of telling us that he
doesn’t care about being God.
This is not his chief interest.
Least of all is he interested in his honor or our praise.
He doesn’t need praise.
He’s got everything.
We need to praise him in order to be who we are.

So it’s mostly for our benefit that we have religions
and rituals.
What he wants is you and me.

ж

Have among yourselves the same attitude
that is also yours in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard quality with God
something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
coming in human likeness;
and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death,
even death on a cross.
Philippians 2: 2-8

Selections from the works of Fr. Thomas Keating for further study
on the nature of divine love that flows from divine union:

Filipenses 2: 5-8
