Introduction to Lectio Divina (via Zoom)

Listen to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart.”
Lectio Divina, a Latin term for “divine reading,” is an ancient monastic practice of praying the scriptures. The monks would gather in prayer and hear the scripture proclaimed. They would take a word or phrase that spoke to them into the activity of their day. Pondering this thought, ruminating on it throughout their work, they were aware of God’s presence.
Lectio Divina is a traditional way of cultivating friendship with Christ. It is a way of listening to the texts of scripture as if we were in conversation, with Christ suggesting the topics. This daily encounter with Christ leads beyond mere acquaintanceship to an attitude of friendship, trust and love. The conversation simplifies and gives way to communing.
During Lectio Divina, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the “ear of the heart,” as if one is in conversation with God. Lectio Divina includes moments of reading (lectio), reflecting on (meditatio), responding to (oratio) and resting in (contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one’s relationship with the Divine.
How is Lectio Divina Different from Bible Study
Bible Study is the reading of the scriptures for information and an understanding of the context of the passage. It provides a solid conceptual background for the practice of Lectio Divina. In contrast, Lectio Divina is prayer that leads us into the deeper meaning of scripture and the transformation of our lives. This contemplative reading and listening of the scriptures is compatible with well-grounded interpretation of the Bible.
Lectio Divina will bring you into a more intimate sense of the presence of God in the word of scripture, and you will experience the grace this word has to influence, and indeed, to transform your life.
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Lectio Divina, experience it in a guided setting, and be able to ask questions and share experiences with the presenter and your fellow participants.
