- Sunday September 29: Cup of Compassion

To Practice:
- Prayerfully re-read these passages again in the manner of Lectio Divina, reading them aloud to engage more of your senses and feel the vibrations in your body. What do you hear for your journey now?
- “Offering the Cup” Meditation: Sit comfortably and place a small cup or bowl of water in front of you. Focus on your breathing, centering yourself. After a few moments, gently pick up the cup and hold it in your hands, contemplating the significance of offering something simple yet essential. Imagine that by offering this water, you are offering kindness, compassion, or love to someone in need. Visualise someone in your life or community who might benefit from this offering – whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Reflect on the ways small acts, like giving a cup of water, can be a channel of God’s grace. Hold the cup close to your heart, breathe deeply, and say a quiet prayer of blessing for the person in your heart.

When a large encampment in Sacramento was about to close, staff from the Front Street Animal Shelter met with the people and offered short term respite for their pets. While they couldn’t solve the long term problem of homelessness, they could recognize the worth of the people by recognizing the worth of their pets. For people whose lives are continually being disrupted, pets are the one constant and are essential to their well being. A small act perhaps but one that introduced love into a volatile and hate filled situation.

Henri Nouwen’s sentence resonates: “Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human.” Embracing my own brokenness, fears, confusion and anguish allows me to come alongside others also experiencing these emotions and states of being, especially those closest to me. To be able to help them navigate difficult situations helps me navigate them. We buoy each other. <3 linda
