Q: I experience an exaggerated startle reflex during Centering Prayer. The physical jolt in response to any sound, including the concluding bell, is distracting and distressing. I realize that simply accepting it, relaxing, and letting the distressing emotion pass may be the best approach. But I wonder if there is another approach I can try. Perhaps I can benefit from someone else’s experience.
A: Thanks for reaching out regarding experiencing a high startle during Centering Prayer. I too, have a high startle both during the prayer and during life as a whole.
The only real help I have found is a gentle bell ringer! I also believe that our bodies get used to a certain length of the time (whether it’s 20 or 30 minutes) the more regular and often we practice, which can help. But when that bell is really struck hard it’s totally discombobulating to my whole body/nervous system. Then the Welcoming Prayer helps. Sorry I can’t offer any antidotes. Maybe we just have to keep reminding bell ringers to strike lightly!
